The Heppner Gazette Issued Thursday Morning. Warnook & Micliell. Entered at the Postoffice at Heppner Oregon, as second-class matter. Thursday, Nov. 13, 1902 The increased Republican ma joritiee on the Pacific coast at the recent elections is a strong endorse w.nf nf V10 administration. For the opening of the Morrow county coal lielda, Messrs. Geo. Conser, D. A. Ilerren and C. E. Redfield are entitled to great cred it. One of the ablest coal experts in the country makes no secret of saying: "I know the coal is there and we will show it." The Heppner Railroad & Coal Company has already expended in the neighborhood of $30,000, and the mo3t of this has gone into the rhpnnels of trade of Morrow county. The active development work is already helping Morrow coucty business interests. During the three years of its rontinuance. the war in soutn Africa resulted in the killing from wounds and disease of 22,000 British soldiers. During the same three years the railways of the United States, engaged in peace- pursuits, killed people. Interstate Commerce Com mission, which presents these startling figures, further testifies while piling up this record railways were not managed anv greater disregard to pafety than in previous years. In the same line, is the report of H. A. Walker, who was sent out by the London and North-Western Railway to determine whether the American railway system bad any features that British railways might profitably adopt. In speak ing of the safety of employees and passengers, he says: ''Human life seems to be considered of much less imnortance there than here, and I am of opinion that, in this! .... i reepect, the British railway oth ciala have nothing to learn from their Amuican confreres.'' ful The that, the with In the state canvasses the Re publicans made a very encourag ing showing in the voting Tues day. They carried New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Con necticut, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and all the other states which they bad any expec tations of winning. The Demo crats caried all the states in the South which voted for state offi cers and held nearly all the con gressmen. The Republicans were not looking for any gains iu the South, made none and did not at tempt to make any. The genera result in the state canvasJeS, like that on Congress, is very pleasing to the Republicans. They did boUc. than rnnny UepU 01 1CRU leaders expected. Ovei confidence hampered them in some states. The apathy which the Republican prosperity throughout the country induced also impeded them in many localities. They won enough states, however, to show tnat uie country stands with the Republi can party by a good sized majority. OUR NATIONAL PROSPERITY. The anuual report of the Treas urer of the United States is a great showing of our material prosperity. The report of the Treasurer does not, like the report of the Secretary of the Treasury, deal specially with the fiscal policies of the Na tion. It merely tells what money has been taken in and paid out and its sources, with a description of the forms of the currency handled. The Treasury during the last fiscal year received the enormous sum of $1,062,124,037 and disbursed $000, 027,031. The available cash bal ance at the close of the fiscal year was $3G2.187,3G1. In spite of our substantial protective duties, the increase of receipts from the cus toms was 815,859,252 and the de crease of internal revenue receipts of $25,207,101 was much mre than made good by a decrease in expen ditures of tfjS.uMtf'J Boys' 3 piece suit, in grey mixed bouble breasted vest.ages 4 to 10..&- OU Boys' dark grey, sailor collar, .two Diece 1 oU J?
