Mrs. Mclowell sang several selections, w hich were highly appreciated, as her rich mellow voice was well suited to the pieces. Mrs. Mcl'owell being well vsrsed in music, tested several voices and came to the conclusion that of those present she preferred Mr. tiarrigues' or Mr. Conner's voices, but did not care to make a choice as both claim the laurels. The deposits are near the city limits which adds to their value. l'he deposits heretofore were sup posed to be a ijiiartz ledge, but after a careful examination by Mining Expert J nomas I.. Brophy, Lis report skows tint the deposits are as above stated. In an interview, Mr. J'.rophy said: "The first place examined, I found an immense deposit of oxide f iron. This is very suitable for paint as it wears well aud is a great protection to a build ing. It also has great pow.;r of resist ance to fire. Judging from the contour of the mountain and the pitch and strike, I believe there is an immense amount of this subBtance on Mr. Mor an's property. This carries small value in gold and will probably carry mure at greater depth which would he found near the bedrock." "The next deposit I examined" said Mr. lirophy, "proved to be po'assiuai stone, which is very rich. It is of a dark blue color, aud is also very ex tensive. After the rain saturates the potassium stone, the heat of the sua calls the potassium to the surface. This is not harmful to horses or cattle, but proves death to sheep," con unueu Mr. isropur. '.Many large lands of sheep throughout Fastern Oregon have been poisoned from lick ing potassium off the stones. Sheep are very fond of it. AfUr finding these conditions, I ssked Mr. Morgan if any sheep had ever been turned in this asture. He told me that a band of heep was turned in this field and all died but one and the one that was left never agaiu had any wool." The next poiut examined," said Mr. lirophy "was a large bank where po tassium composed half the amount of soil. Mr. Morgan wanted me to exam ine this point, as his stock would come there and lick and eat this sutistance. I his part of the field is very rich and can be recovered hv leaching." Mr, lirophy says that Kastern Ore m is very rich in this product which is warning to sheepmen. "It is usually taken for alkali," Mr. liroiihv continued. I think the time is not tar distant hen the potassium deposits will prove great source of weaith to this juntrv. Nitrate of potassium is the substance from which nitric acid is distilled. It enters into the manfacture of black powder, and a'so is used ss medicine known as salt petre. lTFrWI""-"W r - -fs-rii- 120 Ladies Sleeveless Vests A Light ffauze Vfht with Tapfcd N'tck blcI Finihbed Auj Holes in e: , --.
