It seems that a majority of the people who reside near the pro posed forest reserve in the Straw lrry and Blue Mountain region, are opposed to the creation of thia reserve. Their claims are that the withdrawal of such a large tract of good land would be a great drawback in the advance ment of the country. The tragic end of Tracy brings vividly to mind the result of a niirspect life. At the cost of the lives of seven good men, Tracy and Merrill are back in the Ore gon penitentiary, in their graves, acd their end brings a relief to think that the world is rid of these dangerous characters. Crim inals from choice, they have reaped their harvest. There is a lesson in their career that should be ol benefit to many. N ) time in tbe history or the Oregon Mite Fair has there been such a frod feeling among tbe agricultural classes towards tbe success of the fafr as exists at the present time. Every section of the state eeerrn to be taking an iiterest in ths ta;r and promise to give it their hearty support. There are ieaiocs for th'.i awakening of the people to support of the fair. One is, the management has worked hard and faithfully to make the fair as broad as the a'ate hseil. Tbe transportation companies have come to their assistance and made very liberal rates on hauling exhibits of all kinds. Paul Krager, ex-President of the Republic of Transvaal, is still unreconciled to the defeat of the Boers. This la to be expected. An old naao who, for many years of his long life, was dictator in a so-called republic, he cannot take io the widened view of tbe Boer's horizon, nor see the elements of growth and expausion in all mater ial and commercial lines that will follow this so-called "defeat of a brave people." He will continue to repine and groan until in due time he passes from earth, while the Trausvaalers will rise to meet their opportunities with a progres sive spirit that be does not posse.-s and cannot understand. The pitv tbat is meet for a disappointed old man, who in his prime was nar row, pugnacious, stubborn and forceful, is Paul Krugsr's due, and is bestowed without stint by the inately pitiful.
