The city presented a patriotic appear ance, r.unting ana nays were pronn nent on both sides of the street the full length of Main strtet. Suspended from a wire in the center of Main street was an immense flair with Mr. Furnish's name appended. Previous arrangements were not no ticeable as there seemed to be only the usual interest was being taken. About an hour before train time there seemed to be a spontaneous outburst of enthus iasm, From the city and from the country there appeared an immense crowd in carriages, on horseback, on bicycles and on foot. All of the vehic les were decorated with flags and bunting. i Without any rtv'ilar otjer the vat I gathering went to the depnt ana he! He cautioned the people not to run away with the idea that thnre was no politics in this campaign a Mr. Cham berlain had stated. Mr. Fulton's speech was presented as a plain business proposition that ; should be token home by all the peo ple. He spoke of the grand work of the Republican party in the history of this country. That under republican administration we were leading the world in progress, prosperity and com merce. That our American laboring men are being paid more for tbeir labor than any laboring people on the face of the eartb. Mr. Fulton dwelt at length on the Philippine question as it stands before the American people today, and bis argument in favor of the retention of these islands as opposed to the policy scuttle and abandonment as offered by the Dernociatic party, was convincing. Lack of space prevents an extensive review- of his speech. It was a great speech and made many Republican votes. The Building Trades Council will at once take steps to start a large union mill, and it is believed that all building stopped by the strike w ill soon be un der good headway again. The union leaders believe that in this manner they have spared disaster It is the same old story with tbe wool market again this week. Conditions remain unchanged. A few local wool sales are reported. The present floe weather has caused renewed activity among tHe growers, and the tendency to sell is more appar ent. During the rainy season every thing was forced to a standstill, but since the summer weather has appeared growers are rushing matters. The shearers are now busily engaged in fin ishing op the sheep that bave not been sheared. To be in readiness for tbe wool sales that are to come eff in .this city on the 4th and 5th of next month, growers are bringing in wool at a lively rate. For tbe past week wool teams have lined the streets. At the sales there will be offered in the neighborhood of 1,500,000 pounds. This will be about half of the wool bandied here this season. Buyers and growers both seem to be waiting for the sales' days. Vm. Ellerey, representing Hallowel, Donald & Co. of Boston, is a new buy er in the field who arrived this week. He is looking over the wools and ex pects to make some offers at the wool sales. Wool is now quoted at from lO'j.' to 11 1 2 cents per pound. The following sales are reported : A. H. Allen, of Hardman, sold his clip for l'l1.; cents per pound. Hynd Pros sold --',tXi pounds at 105s cents per pound. W. (i. McCaity geld l',0.: pounds for 1 1. 3.j cents per pound. Contrary to former opinion, the sheep that were L'r sale are pretty well closed out. John M.-ek shipped out 5000 yearling wetl.e' T ;es day morning. These sheep were purchased f-'r M. With a youthful companion, Thomas Arnold, GraMlIi was beating bia way northward, and early last Son day morning was pat off a train by a brakeman this side of Rice Hill, in the northern part of Douglas county. They went on over tbe bill and at a sharp curve known as tbe Grecian Iiend, they placed a cattle guard rail, a heavy angle iron and a block of wood upon tbe track in such a way as would almost certainly bave thrown into the galch any train which may hate struck them. As President Harriman's train was due soon after, the section crew was espe cially vigilant in seeing that the track was clear, and discovered and removed the obstruction before any serious harm was done. Tbe miscreants were appre hended by tbe chief of police of Cot tage Grove. Thomas Arnold, aged 17 years, being merely an accomplice, and bis testimony being very material in convicting the real offender, he waa gi-en but 00 days in tbe county jail to meditate upon the seriousness of the offense.
