The Repubh. Jean platform declares, without quivoeation. "against all pro posals lookiug to retirement of the L'niUnl States from the Philippine Islands." Equally without equiv ocation the Democratic platform declares that the United States ehould "rant them their inde pendence." Here is a national ine, in tLe Oregon election, f first magnitude and highest im portance. Democratic success in Oregon would announce to the people of the United States that Oregon had deliberately voted for with drawal from the Philippine Islands; that bar senators and representa tives in Congress were expected to support the policy of withdrawal; that Oregon desires tha position gained in the Orient through the Spanish war to be abandoned, re gardless of the general advantages which the position gives us. Is it for a Pacific state to take the lead in this policy of "ecattle"? Is it for Oregon to take the lead in it? Care we nothing for the ?ast opportunities which the pos session of the Philippines opens to us? Is Oregon to declare, and be first to declare, for surrender of that incomparable station of com merce in the Orient? The assertion or assumption that our sovereignty ever the islands is incompatible with the principles of human freedom is a libel upon our own devotion to those principles, of which Ameri cans should be ashamed. Already we are introducing ment there; and the only fsar is that we shall go faster with it than the paople are prepared for for it. We shall establish and maintain in the island our familiar system of territoral government, which we have followed in our home territories for a century a eystem in every way comforable to the principles of freedom. Whether we shall retain the Philippines, accepting our oppor tunities and duties and making the most of both, or scuttle the islands, is the national question now before the people for Oregon. Oregunian. Everything indicates a quiet campaign, a sort of a 'still bunt." Oregon never was a democratic state. Will the Republicans of Oregon allow the state to be placed in the Democratic column by electing Chamberlain for gover Lor? Reports from Gilliam county say that our old friend Willard Herren will run like a scared wolf for sheriff He will be elected and will make Gilliam county a good sheriff. keeping in his office; his last bien nial report was the most complete and instructive ever issued; he has been watchful, vigilant and phe nomenolly firm aud conscientious in auditing claims against the state, allowing nothing to be paid out except clearly authorized by law; and in every respect he has performed his duties with scrupu lous and remarkable ability, zeal anal fidelity. Mr. Dunbar has cer tainly filled the bill more perfectly than it was ever filled before, and well deserves the substantial com pliment aud cotnmeudatiou not only of the renomination he has already received, but of the re election that it is pretty oertain he will receive on the first Mon day in June.
