A mease nger ar rived in Baker City today, bringing with him a bottle of the first oil struck in the Malheur basin. The oil came from the Mewell well, a short distance from the, town of Nauipa.and was obtained at a depth of 110 feet. The oil analyzes 78 per cent paraffin, the highest grade of natural oil known. Much excitement prevails. Two miles from the Newell well oil has been reached at a depth of 480 feet. Tbia well can now pump 2o barrels per dy. At the Pendleton high school building Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock what came near being a serious accident occurred. The children of the third grade in of iss Elsie Folsom's room were basj at their work when a piece of plas tering suddenly fell from the ceil ing in one corner of tbe room. The teacher and her pupils were startled bat became qniet again. Then another piece fell and Misa Folbom becoming alarmed called in tbe janitor. He made a hur ried examination while other small pieces were falling. Qaickly the children were told to leave the room but tbe la6t one had hardly made bis exit w hen the entire ceil ing fell with a mighty crash on the desks and floor of tbe school room. The plaster was firm and did not break to pieces and its weight would have crashed many of the children to tbe floor. In places it would probably have broken through on their beads but it would have been a miracle for all to escape. The little people would hare been -greatly frightened and in their excitement some of them might have been eulTocateJ. There were 65 in the room.
