HENRY BLACKM AN RETURNS Superiority f OrefSN Exhltlts at Pan-American Exposition ABE YOU DEAF? HEAD NOISES? Hon. Henry Blackman, one of the Oregon representatives at tbe Pan Amer ican Exposition, arrived heme in this City from Buffalo, Wednesday evening of last week. In an interview, Mr. Blackmail gave an interesting account of the fair. He left Heppner on tbe 10th of last April and arrived at Buffalo on the 15th. He states that as a reception, ttiere was one of the worst snow Storms that he ever encountered. The storm made it very had for exposition workers, causing a d. lav, especially in outside work. General Superintendent Poach and his efficient and diligent assistants, had the Oregon exhibit all ready by May 1, hut owing to tbe storsny weather the exposition was not formally opened until May 20. When Mr. B acktoan arrived, In the horticultural dpartmrnt there were only '! boxes of apples, bnt this small show ing created a wide interest with much favorable comment while being in com petition with aurh atatea a New York. jer, ktdtirrs and b.iwels, parirjra the Minnesota, Missouri and Michigan, all t,,, irk.theDS the turves, brrce having an immense disj.lav. tuultnuds o( malidiw. Tbi, was not only for the United Htates, but Canada as well. The forestry department was one of the attractive features of the exposition. The Oregon exhibit occupied one-third of the entire forestry building, and the exhibit was larger than all the rest of the United States and tbe foreittn coon tries. There were over 400 specimens and lol different varieties of Oregon wood. One fir timber tbat'required two flat cars for shipment and wss so large that it could not be placed inside tbe build ing, attracted mucb attention, it was 74 feet in length, 36 inches square weighed 24,000 pounds, and contained over 7,800 feet of lumber. Another timber 74 feet in length, 20 inches wide and 4 inches thick, without a knot or blemish, commanded great at tention. This building, being close to the gov eminent building, was crowded all the time, being in charge of A. J. Johnson forestry expert and commissioner. The Oregon mining exhibit was one of the most attractive in the mining bnild ing, being in charge of Fred Mellis of Baker City and Capt. W. Miller of Port land. There were specimens in gold bars nuggets and quarts, including fine speci mens from all the leading mines of Eastern Oregon. Out of three silver medals awarded to the Pacific coast, Oregon carried off two, and the third went to Nevada On reception day in tbe mining build ing, many specimens were given awav In the agricultural department, 8 gold medals were awarded. This was admitted and conceded by all to be the most handsome booth there In the way of decoration, and arrange merit it was the most elaborate. It was considered the swell booth of the fair There were 8CT pieces of grains and grasses with 329 varieties. In the office, there was a scene made from 57 stalks of wheat, representing sunset on the Columbia. At Oregon grown corn, Eastern peo ple were greatly surprised. There were specimens of corn seventeen feet six inches in height; rye, eight feet two inches tall ; oats, seven feet six inches tall that produced 122 bushels to tbe acre. Wheat, seven feet and over timothy with heads sixteen inches in length ; field peas with vines over twelve feet in length. New York hop growers frankly ac knowledge'! that thev could not compete with Oregon in growing bops. When wheat was shown that ltad yielded frotai 24 to t5 bushels to the acre people could not conceal their admira tion, and a great many wanted some of it for seed. Mr. Blackman stated that taking is all in all, for the small appropriation it was a representative display. All of the attendants representing Oregon, worked bard and all bad a word of praise for Col. H. E. Doech. The night before leaving the Oregon repre sentatives presented him with a beauti ful gold pen and holder as a token of their appreciation o bis efforts. That he was a man ot great executive ability with interests of the state at heart. Mr. Biackmin spoke very highly of Mrs. Edyth Toiier Wetherred who is doing good work for Oregon and also for the Lewis and Clark Centennial He said that the death of President McKinley took the life wit of the fair. The mo-ning his death was announced a great many people were crying on the grounds. The illu inations were grand. Two prizes were awardm! to Oreren wool, which was superior l amlhiaig there. Mr. Blackman has partta lv regained his health and is g'ad to get horve again. He says there is no place like Oreon. SPREADS LIKE WILDFIRE. Wben thing are "tbe beet" thry be oome"tbe best selling."
