WEATHEE AND CHOP BULLETIN.
The following weather and crop bulletin
comes to us signed by A. B, Wollaber, as act-
ting section director:
Weather. Fair, pleasant weather, with high
temperatures, prevailed during the week.
The mean temperature averaged 74 degrees,
which is 6 higher than for the preceding week
and 3 higher than for the corresponding week
last year. The maximum temperatures ranged
from 84 to 102 degrees over the Columbia river
valley and from 80 to 94 degrees over the plateau
region. The minimum temperatures la the
valley ranged from 58 to 72 degrees, and ..over
the plateau from 50 to 60 degrees. No rain fell
during the week. The winds were northerly
In direction and light in iorce.
Crops. The grain crop continues in good
condition. The hot north winds have caused
some shrivelling, but reports indicate that no
serious damage has been done up to the present
date. The valley grain is under irrigation and
looks fine. Rain would be of benefit. Fall
and winter-sown grain are turning yellow and
spring sown is heading. The warm weather
will prevent filling. The stand is about normal.
Harvesting fall-sown wheat has commenced
In sections of Umatilla county. Barley Is In
excellent condition and harvesting has com
menced in some iocalites , Haying continues
in some sections, in others it has been corn
pleted. The crop was excellent, the quality
has been housed.
The continued dry weather has afl'eeted
pastures and they are rapidly drying up. The
stock has been moved to the summer range in
the mountains.
There Is no change in the fruit prospectB,
Prunes will be a short crop. Cherries are ripe
and picking has commenced. In some sections
of the Columbia and Snake river valleys the
fruit crop is good. The apple crop of Union
county will not be as good as in former years
Peaches continue to ripen.
Bugar beets are making fine growth. Corn
and potatoes are advancing rapidly, but rain
would be very beneficial. Garden produce is
in fair condition and also needs rain.
Stock is doing well. Range food Is reported
plentiful.
The working of summer fallow continues in
many sections.
The first pure type of summer weather con
ditlons made its appearance on 11th , inst,
although summer weather has prevailed since
June 15. With the pure type, light local show
ers may occur west of the Cascades and thunder
storms east of them, but no general rain
probable for at least two months more.
The rivers continue to fall slowly, and will
continue to fall at about their present rate for
the next few weeks. The rivers will remai
above their normal height for several weeks
