B, Wollaber, as act- ting section director: Weather. Fair, pleasant weather, with high temperatures, prevailed during the week. The mean temperature averaged 74 degrees, which is 6 higher than for the preceding week and 3 higher than for the corresponding week last year. The maximum temperatures ranged from 84 to 102 degrees over the Columbia river valley and from 80 to 94 degrees over the plateau region. The minimum temperatures la the valley ranged from 58 to 72 degrees, and ..over the plateau from 50 to 60 degrees. No rain fell during the week. The winds were northerly In direction and light in iorce. Crops. The grain crop continues in good condition. The hot north winds have caused some shrivelling, but reports indicate that no serious damage has been done up to the present date. The valley grain is under irrigation and looks fine. Rain would be of benefit. Fall and winter-sown grain are turning yellow and spring sown is heading. The warm weather will prevent filling. The stand is about normal. Harvesting fall-sown wheat has commenced In sections of Umatilla county. Barley Is In excellent condition and harvesting has com menced in some iocalites , Haying continues in some sections, in others it has been corn pleted. The crop was excellent, the quality has been housed. The continued dry weather has afl'eeted pastures and they are rapidly drying up. The stock has been moved to the summer range in the mountains. There Is no change in the fruit prospectB, Prunes will be a short crop. Cherries are ripe and picking has commenced. In some sections of the Columbia and Snake river valleys the fruit crop is good. The apple crop of Union county will not be as good as in former years Peaches continue to ripen. Bugar beets are making fine growth. Corn and potatoes are advancing rapidly, but rain would be very beneficial. Garden produce is in fair condition and also needs rain. Stock is doing well. Range food Is reported plentiful. The working of summer fallow continues in many sections. The first pure type of summer weather con ditlons made its appearance on 11th , inst, although summer weather has prevailed since June 15. With the pure type, light local show ers may occur west of the Cascades and thunder storms east of them, but no general rain probable for at least two months more. The rivers continue to fall slowly, and will continue to fall at about their present rate for the next few weeks.
