SCOTT, General Passenger Agt. Portland, Oregon. Out o f the many new subscribers received by the Itemizer on our half century anniversary, there were nearly 100 that will during the next year help eastern ers get acquainted with Polk county, and by continual reading o f this country’s merits get into their mind the idea o f settling among us. Itemizer subscribers from all over the county sent us in their 50 cent pieces and ordered the paper for a year to friends all over the United States whom they desired to have read o f our advantages, with the idea that such would bring them to us in the future. And we believe that it will work to great good, as we have always contended that such was the very best means o f advertising that our com mercial club could put forth, as we have been trying it for years and are well aware o f its efficiency. Mr. D. P. Patterson, o f the promotion committee, also believes that there could be no better advertisement put forth by our commercial club that the sending o f a town pa per for a stated period to all inquiries received by the club. The easterner who is thinking o f changing loca tion can receive no better impetus in that direction than by the weekly reading o f a local paper, and the happen ings it so gives o f weekly occurrences, and would beat all the booklets that could be put out, no m attor how classy. Every one is bound to take the matter in a booklet as a little stretched, as they know it is gotten out for the purpose o f attracting settlers, but with a newspaper it is different. The paper is supposed to be a chronicle o f truth only, and the easterner feels that he can rely on what is found therein. Then too by con tinued reading he becomes acquainted with the names o f our people, and when it com es time for him to pull up and leave his old home, he feels as if he wants to come to the place where he knows the people, and will not be so easily pulled off on the way by the real estate sharks whp so oftim es beset his pathway hither, continually setting forth the advantages o f their own particular locality. I f our commercial club will adopt this method o f spending their advertising fund, they will find it more beneficial than any other they can pos sibly try out. A s the Itemizer cannot but help in any good boosting movement, we will continue our birthday price to any parties outside o f the state. I f you want to send the paper to any friend or relative outside the state whom you think can be induced to com e to our section, all you will have to pay to have the Itemizer sent him for one year is 50 cents. I f that does not bring him, we cannot conceive what will. The Dallas Itemizer wanU to know why the Review di>e6 not laud Bryan as some democratic editors are do ing. W e’ ll tell you Bro. Fiske. Bryan had promised to support Clarke, but did not intend to do so. He went to Baltimore, we think, with the intention o f fo r cing his own nomination, but when defeated for tem porary chairman, this became impossible. Then he got sulky, Clarke was clearly the choice o f the convention, receiving a decisive majority, and he would have been nominated had not Bryan, abandoning all sense o f grat itude, accomplished the Missourian’s defeat by what Mr. Clarke says were vile, malicious and untruthful in sinuations against the speaker while the latter was at tending to his duties at Washington and could not he present to refute them. I f this is what constitutes a great party leader and patriot, then we guess Bryan is it The Review certainly views Bryan’s actions at the convention with a jaundiced eye, one entirely different from that used by the m ajority o f us. Bryan w ent to Baltimore with a fixed purpose, and that purpose was not his own advancement, but the advancement o f his party in that they follow out the principles he has ad vocated for these many years. As a heroic leader o f those principles it made no difference in his mind wheth er friend or foe tried to nullify the work o f getting them through. I f Clarke saw fit to ally him self with the bosses, he was digging his own grave, and Bryan as a conscientious leader could do nothing else but drop him, and stand for a man who would not accept taint ed votes or money in the strife for right. To our mind Bryan was the noblest Roman o f them all, and notwith standing the R eview ’s aspersions will continue to be honored for the stamina he exhibited at Baltimore in turning down the plutocrats who in Clark thought they had a willing and plastic henchman, one who if nomi nated, would work at their behest, and give them a strin g on the govern m en t that would prove as detrimen tal to right and justice as it is in the present incumbent. PLATFORMS AND HE<H SERVICE. The fram ers o f the Platform o f the Republican Na tional Convention did not see fit to make any definite declaration on the su bject o f a national Bureau or De partm ent o f Health. For this omission there are two possible explanations. Either they do not consider the su bject o f sufficient importance to be worthy o f mention or they feared the antagonism o f the interests and sects which, either through selfishness or ignorance, have op posed this measure. On the contrary, the framers o f the platform for the Democratic party placed in it a strong and com prehensive endorsement o f a national health service. The | lank is a straightforward endorse- ment o f the principles o f the present Owen bill. It reads: "W e reaffirm our previous declarations advocating the union and strengthening o f the various governm en tal agencies relating to pure foods, quarantine, vital statistics and human health. Thus united and ad ministered without partiality to our discrimination against any school o f medicine or system o f healing they would constitute a single health service, not subordina ted to any commercial or financial interests, but devot ed exclusively to the conservation o f human life and e f ficiency. Moreover, this health service should cooper ate with the health agencies o f our various states and cities without interference with their prerogatives or with the freedom o f individuals to employ such medical or hygienic aid as they may see fit.” The plank in the Dem ocratic platform evidently meets the approval o f the Journal o f the Am erican Medical Association. In a recent issue it says, com m enting on this statement: “ There is nothing vague about this; it is concise and straightforw ard with no attempt at am bigu ity.” Commercial bodies o f the state are showing an inter est in the collection o f Oregon exhibits to be shown this winter at the land shows o f the middle west. In re sponse to a call sent out by Manager Chapman o f the Oregon Development league, many outside sociaties have been heard from , each promising to collect samples o f the best products grown there this season and it seems a good collection is assured. N o locality should allow itself to be unrepresented. Dallas is probably the only town o f her size in Oregon that does not print her ordinances as passed in her town papers. This is economy without doubt, but is is it g iv ing her citizens the knowledge they are entitled to o f the laws that govern them ? We are thankful to the many friends all over Polk county who on last Saturday tendered us their congrat ulations, and wished U9 many more years at the helm o f the Itemizer fighting for the right and the advance ment o f the county.
