THE POLK COUNTY ITEMIZER. A dm itted to the second cl* »* o f m ail m atter. T H U R S D A Y . A P R IL I I , 1912 V . P . FISK E . ! Itemizer, one year in a<lvance.......................................$1 'r>0 With Weekly Oregonian or Semi-weekly Journal ............ S 00 With Goat Magazine ’ PHONES: . . . ' . ................. ................ .......... . MUTUAL{ 1 60 M o . M i Main St. P atron itt One Anothrr for the Upbuilding of Town and County. The Itemizer has been many times lately importuned by both letter and personally to come over into the Champ Clark column, and the funny part o f it to us was that some o f this requesting was from republicans. Before committing ourselves in this campaign, we carefully weighed the record o f every prospective candidate offer ed by the democracy for the presidency. We chose Woodrow Wilson—and by the way, the Itemizer was the first paper in the United States to propose him for the presidency- because we believe him an ideal man for the head of our nation, o f good and sound mind, untainted by politics, and with sufficient business acumen and comon sense to steer our country through any troubles which might beset it. Why this great desire by some republicans and some democrats to have Clark the nomi nee? It looks to us as if the republicans want to be cer tain o f having their kind of a man to fall back on should Taft fail o f the nomination or election a man so allied with the interests that the trusts could go on with their unrestricted piling up o f money, be able to defy all laws, knowing they could win out in the courts. Champ is a pretty good all round man, as men go nowadays, but he is in the wrong bunch to make a president for the peo ple and their best interests. Woodrow Wilson has run out o f funds to conduct any further campaign, except such as his friends put up for him, he having refused Standard Oil money, while Champ Clark is conducting a most agressive campaign with a seemingly unlimited campaign sack. O f the two candidates, with the peo ples best interests at heart from our view point, we see no reason why we should discontinue our- support of Woodrow Wilson for the democratic candidate for the presidency, believing, also, that he can win out over any candidate put up by the republicans. The Itemizer has nothing but praise to give Mr. Fost er for his editorial o f last week regarding the publica tion o f city notices. When a town or its individuals shrink on the support they give their home papers, they in proportion retard their own advancement. It costs big money to put out the class of papers that Dallas is receiving, and sympathy and support for them should be the watchword o f every inhabitant, rather than the ten dency o f some to cut down their revenue, or to get something for nothing. The editors are working every day and most o f the time while you are asleep to build up your town, and are rightfully entitled.to every cent o f business that they can possibly secure, and then, as Mr. Foster says, you see neither of them owning autos or having other luxuries now so common toother people in other lines o f business. A newspaper man puts in more good hard labor for what he receives than any other calling in the world. It is a joy to him when it is appreciated, but becomes mighty irksome under other cir cumstances, especially when he is charged with graft. All he wants is a fair conpensation for his labor, and when he receives it is generally as happy as a clam at high tide, leaving the matter o f getting rich to other people. Most towns the size o f Dallas publish every city ordin ance they pass for the benefit o f their citizens, and count the money well spent. Papers whose dale o f issuance is on Friday will have to be very careful to not run up against a violation of the corrupt practice act, as papers coming out on the 19th must not have any landation of candidates within their columns. The Oregonian has ceased to exchange with us, prob ably in a huff about something we have said about their policies. We are not suprised, as for petty animosity that sheet eclipses any paper we know of. DALLAS TRANSFER' DALLAS, The city papers and the rail roads are constantly tell ing o f the new comers to our state, but Dallas fails to see her proper per centum o f them. Our commercial club took a step in the right direction when they made an advertising committee, composed o f such well known progressives as H. G. Campbell, D. P. Patterson and J. R. Craven. It is their intention to carry an advertise ment in the home papers setting forth in terse lan guage what Dallas has and what she desires further, so that all who get a town paper can tell almost at a glance our needs and resonrees. The plan long advcc-ted by the Item ize of sending the home papers fora few months to all bona fide inquirers will be given serious considera tion by this committee, also the idea o f advertising in county papers o f the middle west. The Itemizer is of the opinion that a certain portion o f the club’s income should be set aside each month for the use o f the adver DU tising committee, they to expend it as they see fit, and in the manner they think will bring the best results. If the amount be a fixed one, they can more intelligent ly make out their plan pf campaign for a year and to much better advantage, for as we take it, this commit tee was not a special one, but one for the year. While they were given power to act by the club, yet no limit was put on what they should expend, and consequently they will feel rather bashful about spending anything, not knowing what the club desires. A fixed amount should be given for their use, and we are certain it will prove money well expended. Some o f our town knockers made the plea on election day that they did not know where all the city revenue went to. If they had been possessed o f ordinary intelli gence they could easily see where the money was ex pended, and not been foolish enough to cry graft where there is no graft. For years the Itemizer has published i 1 its first monthly issue just what goes with the money, and if they had cared to go to the trouble o f adding up those amounts month by month they could easily have known all such assertions were false. We have been attending council meetings for 27 years here and are willing to wager our life blood that not one penny of graft has ever been taken by one of our councilmen. The result o f our late census shows how easy it is for people to become fooled on the growth o f a town, many o f our guesses being governed more by what they de sired our population to be rather than what they would have judged had they given the matter careful study. Mr. W. A. Ayres was one o f the closest guessers for the reason that last spring he drew maps of every block in the city limits and o f the houses thereon. He made the census about what the government gave us, and knew nearly to a dot what it ought to be at the present time. By the way the Itemizer is much obliged to Mr. Ayres for the use of those maps, which aided us greatly in our work. OREGON As a sample o f the loyalty that our people have for their town papers, we found out in our recent census that over 100 residents o f Dallas take neither of their town papers. There is not a man in Dallas too poor to pay the subscription price o f $1.50 a year that one o f them would cost him. Such loyalty may be the reason for the defeat o f the three needed amendments to our city charter. The men who do not read at least their home paper are liable to believe every fool thing that is told them by those interested as to the merits or demer its o f any question and are likely to vote as intelligently as a band o f sheep. YOUNG MEN Union Pacific Life Insurance Co. Makes Loan in Corvallis. President Mark T. Kady and Treasurer F. H. Weincken o f the Union Pacific Life Insurance company of Portland are in the city negotiating a loan o f $6000 on the K. P. building. The Union Life is a new Ore gon company that is just com *) pleting the placing o f its capital fï) stock preparatory to beginning the active and aggressive writ ing of insurance. The company now has $91,634 o f cash assets and the amount is rapidly ap proaching $100,000, which is nec essary to the securing o f license for writing insurance. This is a vigoro syoungorgan- ization with a splendid staff of officers, all men o f large financial strength and experience. It is a distinctively Oregon company; 376 of its stockholders are Ore gonians and a number are resi dents o f Benton county, over $15, 000 held in Marion county. The 6 per cent loan now being placed by this company on the K. P. building illustrates the value o f such domestic organiza tions as the Union Pacific Life. Keeping Oregon money at work at home by financing her industries with her own funds is the sure way to commercial in dependence. This is the funda mental idea of the U. P. Life In surance Co. and is in strict ac cord with the ‘ 'Made in Oregon” campaign now sweeping the state. Oregon pays heavy tribute to great eastern money centers in many millions o f annual insur ance premiums, and then send after this many more millions in interest to borrow back at high rates the first millions with which to finance her industries, as other home industries are self- evident; and Oregon people are getting wise as is evinced by the splendid patronage they are giv ing the states own vigorous young insurance companies. The Union Pacific Life has an important field o f its own, and Benton county people will have the satisfaction o f seeing the funds they invest in its securities and insurance coming right back j to their own community to work | and circulate, as in the case o f ! K. P. building. —Corvallis Repub lican. Mr. E. Anderson, the local rep resentative, is at the New Scott hotel where he will be glad to make other loans and the pur m chase o f mortgages. The time to make such extensions is while the building up o f that residence portion o f the town is in an embryo state, and not wait until homes are built and great cost is added to the improvement. We think there is not a resident o f that portion but what would rather be living on a straight thoroughfare clear through the city, than as it is now on crooks and turns that make one dizzy to con template. Such improvement would add much to the value of the property, and should a householder desire to sell, he would find it much easier to dispose o f it if the streets are straight and parallel, and not making the jogs they do. Then too, such improvement would open up in a sightly manner what is to soon become one o f our best orchard and home districts. What is known as the Illihee tracts are to have several costly and beautiful residences built on them before long, and if the city limits are extended, o f which there is much talk, a con siderable portion o f these will be in town, and a clean, straight boulevard would add much to their worth. It is a beautiful sight now looking down from the city reservoir, but how much better it would be with two parallel straight avenues through the city leading up to them. Mr. Ashbaugh is now erecting a residence at the end o f Clay, but says he would be glad to move back could the street be straightened out. Again we say that now is the time to make the change and not wait until other homes are put up. We all want a beautiful as well as a progressive city. Let us remedy our faults in the beginning, and not wait until the property becomes too valuable to do so without great cost, as was done with the main block o f our town. We have had enough experience in this line as a city to begin to profit by it, and the writer hopes that the proper steps will atonce be taken to make Clay and Washington beautiful straight streets clear through our mile and a half o f city posses- session. Such things are let slide many times because no one takes the initiative. Here it is, and we are go ing to keep at it until we get it.
