The deepest oil well in the United States is near West
Elizabeth, Pa. Its bottom is 5,575 feet beneath the
surface, The deepest well in the world is in Germany
and is 6,572 feet deep. A more remarkable well, per­
haps, reaching a depth of 3,600 feet, was drilled for pe­
troleum in western China by primitive methods and by
means of such crude appliances as a cable made of
t visted strands o f rattan. These fact and much other
interesting information concerning underground sup­
plies o f water and oil and methods o f ge t iig at them
are given in a report entitled "W ell-Drilling Methods,”
by Isaiah Bowman, just published by the United States
Geological Survey as Water-Supply Paper 257. The re­
port is comprehensive and well illustrated, covering 130
pages and containing plates and figures, and may be
considered one o f the semi-popular publications o f the
Survey.
Already Dallas people complain of the nightly revels
at that place in which young men and young women
are wont to congregate at certain restaurants and
crack a bottle o f beer or two, and on one or two in­
stances it is reported that they have become so merry
that they cracked the bottles over each others heads.

otherwise where the sale o f booze was permitted, even
under a model license.—Amity Standard.
This is begging the question to an unlimited extent.
Conditions were the same, if not worse, under a dry
regime. With the elimination o f boxes in our res­
taurants, for which an ordinance is now before our
council, a repetition o f the two revels made so much of
by prohi papers will be entirely eradicated. Do not
stretch the truth, brother. No one has complained of
nightly revels. It only occurred twice and the watch­
ful guardians o f our peace were onto their job.

This is Dallas’ year to so twist the tail feathers o f
our national bird as to make him scream to the limit,
and it is high time that we were getting busy with our
plans for the occasion. The Itemizer has been request­
ed to bring the matter to the attention o f our people,
and to advocate the holding o f at least a two days event,
if not three. Already Arnold has written us that he ia
desirous o f bringing attractions for the event, and
promise« to bring a number o f things that will be novel

A L L W A N T GOOD ROADS.
We have just finished answering an inquirer from
Virginia regarding several farms he saw advertised in
our list in the Itemizer, and who expects to reside near
Dallas as soon as he can sell out his holdings in the
state mentioned. One o f the questions he asked about
every place that he had picked from the list was: "Is
it on a good road,” conveying the impression to us that
his native state has been derelict in the matter o f pro­
viding firstclass highways, and that he hopes to find
conditions better here. The same inquiry regarding
good roads is not an occasional one, but is the main
subject in nearly every inquiry we receive, and the an­
swering of it honestly is a serious handicap in the sell-
o f many places. The Itemizer Realty concern expects
to be doing business in this midst all the rest o f our
days, and we cannot afford to tell strangers anything
but the truth. If we know a place that we have for
sale is on a bad road, and the question is asked by the
wouldbe purchaser, we are compelled to tell him the
tri^th, whether it spoils the sale or not. We lost a sale
at Oakdale last week on this account, but that is o f con­
stant recurrence. Because a place is easy to get at in
the good weather, does not solve the problem for win­
ter, and is a matter that we cannot misrepresent, as we
want none o f our buyers coming back on us as dissatis­
fied with their purchase in the years to come. It may
do for some real estate agents to leads buyers to be­
lieve roads are good when they are not, but not us.
The only remedy we have at hand to sell certain places
is to do all in our power to see that the roads are made
good as speedily as possible. The county has started in
good for this seasc n’ s work, but hardly enough to fix
up more than double the mileage o f last year. Ten
more miles o f good macadam will help out wonderfully
f j so ne o f the now sokttd districts, but with half a doz­
en crushers at work we could each year fix up several
times ihe amount, and would soon have the major por­
tion o f the county in good shape. It should be the aim
every o f ierson in the co u r t/ who wants to dispose o f a
portion or all o f his holdings to work hand in hand with
the Itemizer for better roads, and it will soon be ac­
complished.

and pleasing. It is proposed to consolidate our yearly
meeting of the pioneers o f Polk with the day o f nation­
al holiday, and make at least two days o f fun and pleas­
ure. This should work out to the advantage o f both
parties. The annual meeting o f our pioneers ia one
that can hardly be dispensed with, although year by
year we see their ranks sadly depleted, and it will not
be nrmy more years until there will be but a handful
o f them left to meet together and talk o f the stirring
times when they started the grand work o f making
this country what it has become today. Thinned in
ranks and enfeebled in frame as most o f the survivors
are, they care not to take on the active work o f making
the day one o f pleasure to the younger generations, but
leave that to other hands, while they have their good
time in meeting together. It is our pleasure to furnish
the wherewithal and free enteitainment for them and
their children and grandchildren. This year we can
combine the work with that o f the Fourth o f July and
kill two birds with one stone, and the ball should soon
be started a rolling. It is nearlj' three months away
yet, but the sooner the committees are named and get
to work, the better celebration we will have. It is never
a good idea to leave everything to do to the last minute.
