After all Uncle Joe Cannon can roar your tariff revision as gently as any- sucking dove. “ “ ” . | They say strikes are a sign of prosper ity, But we could do without them just at this period. Great is publicity. It shows that one can elect a president for about a third of what it used to cost. The restaurants are talking of tariff revisions, likewise, with a view of remov ing bread and butter from the free list. The ministers who write that they often get texts from news editorials should know that often the sermon furnishes the text of the editorial. One chancellor may possibly make the emperor of Germany shut up, but it takes baby jumpers, rattles and nurs ing bottles to quiet the emperor of C h i-! na. The record being made by our bas ket ball team is certainly one to be ' proud of, not only their home town, ‘ but the state at large, a sh y their ‘ name of The Oregons, they are adver-, • tising the entire section. So far the , boys have played Bevcn games, and won all of them by good margin«, in fact six of them were walkovers, and played with what were supposed to lx- crack teams too. Our most gratify- ing news this week is that the high altitude of the Montana towns has not affected them. It was supposed this might prove a serious handicap, The outlook now is that our boys will great- ly beat the record of the Alaska team on their trip last year, both as to the number of games played and won. By the end of next week they will lie sup- plied with our new booklets, and I>al- las will begin to assume its proper place on the map. Here's hoping that they keep up their lick. • > j I j j | | i 1 | t £ t " Our city council has fixed the tax levy at 10 mills for the com ing year. I Last year when it was placed at 8 J mills the Itemixcr took the ground t that it was not sufficient for the ini- ’ provementscontemplated, and we now have the same objection to make to the 10-mill one. Results have shown that our forecast of Inst year was cor rcct. The city officials have been hampered in their improvement work all year by lack of sufficient funds, and much that was contemplated sim ply had to bo left undone. It is not he desire of the Itemi/.er to ever ad vocate a high tax, being no more de sirous of paying such on our property than any one else, but as long as cer tain improvements have been start ed, necessary to the growth of our city, we would not hold them back at \his juncture. If it could find the mfcs^y to build the intersections, it would T>» ^possible to finish up nhout 20 more blocks of macadam roadway next year. Under a 10 mill levy, this will be impossible, and just the num ber will have to be fixed that there is money sufficient to pay for, Each street intersection will cost the city- in the neighliorhood of $200, so any one can see that the fixing of 20 blocks would take a bunch of money. There are notes against the city com ing due next year, totaling a considerable amount, that must be taken up. They are promises to pay and must be met. After this is done and the running ex penses of the city paid, which are no small item in themselves, there is not going to lie much, if any, money left for further improvement of our streets. We would have liked to see the levy- made at the lim it of 10 mills and the special water tax of 1 7-10 and the li brary tax of } mill added to this No library tax was levied last year,! but |200 was given to aid them. | The putting of the tax as we mention would have given our harassed city of ficers a little leeway in financial mat ters and obviated to a great extent the troubles of the past year. Directions to Prepare Simple yet Remarkable Home Mixture. A well known authority on rheuma tism gives the following valuable, though simple and harmless prescription, which any one may easily prepare at home. Fluid Extract Dandelion, one half ou nce; Compound Kargon, one ounce; Com pound Syrup Sarsaparilla, three ounces. M ix by shaking well in a bottle, and take a teaspoon full after each meal and at bedtime. H e states that the ingre dients can be obtained from any good prescription pharmacy at small cost, and being af vegetable extraction, are harmless to take. This pleasant mix ture, if taken regularly for a few days, is said to overcome almost any case of rheumatism. The pain and swelling, if any, diminishes with each dose, until permanent results are obtained and without injuring the stomach. While there are many so called rheumatism remedies, patent medicines, etc., some of which do give relief, few really give permanent results and the above will, no doubt, be greatly appreciated by many sufferers here at this time. In quiry at the drug stores of this neigh borhood elicts the information that these drugs are harmless and can lie bought separately, or the druggists here will mix the prescription for our readers if asked to. With gas or kerosene there ia the temptation to let light burn, when not needed, to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some home» the electric light bill amounts to only about $2 per month. You ran probably get some kind of artificial light for less money than electric light, hut does it save you anything when it limits opportunities for work ami recreation, ruins your eyesight, smokes your walls, mars decorations and increases household work. You can probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your meals, but it wouldn't be economy. It is not so much what you save, but how you save, that counts.
