T he m eter system will prevent w aste beyond question, and p re su m ably g u a ra n te e us an a b u n d a n t water supply for all lire purposes. T h a t is th e first consideration to be kept in m ind. W e never w ant a n o th e r such experience as th a t of last sum m er, w hen th e city on two different occa sions was e n tirely a t th e m ercy of any lire t h a t m ig h t have sta rte d . Such a. co n d itio n m u st never occur again un der a n y considerations. O ur citizens will n o t stan d for it. If from waste, let us h i ve m e te rs and stop it, if from waste, let us have m eters and stop it; | if from o th er causes, le t th em be I rem edied a t once. We are ta k in g no chances w ith o u r property— that is n o t w hat we voted w ater works for, - but to have protection, good and con s ta n t. We had supposed that our present w ater supply was good and ample for years to come. That was the understanding at the time of its installation, but now it seems other- I wise, and that the supposed water supply is not even good enough for ■ our present population, which will > probably double in the next five years.
