I am sp e ak in g now to voters who belieye in th e C h ristia n sc rip tu re s, as a rev elatio n of G o d 's will to m e n ; an d who a re real follow ers of o u r Lord Je su s C h rist, th e son of G od, and Savior of m en. I believe th e s ta te m e n t th a t b o th th ese c ad id ates are g re a t and d istin g u ish ed m en , each of th e m well qualified in som e resp ects, a t least, for th e office of p re sid e n t. W h ile in m an y respects M r. B ry an ap p e a rs to possess m uch b e tte r e q u ip m e n t for th e g re a t office th a n his o p p o n en t, bAt g ra n tin g for th e sak e of a rg u m e n t t h a t M r. T a ft is M r. B ry a n ’s eq u al in m ost resp ec ts, an d even h is su p e rio r in som e, I w ish to call special a tte n tio n to a few’ th in g s in w h ich , if you are a dev o u t C h ristian , you will agree w ith m e, th a t M r. B ryan far excells h is C om petitor a s an ideal c a n d id a te . I refer first to th e fact th a t m an y co n ten d th a t no one h a s a rig h t to p refer, o r reject a c a n d id a te on acco u n t of b is religious belief. W hile som e even th in k or p reten d to th in k t h a t to do so is to favor u n io n of ch u rch an d s ta te , b u t such th o u g h ts a re m ere vag aries of an over w rought im a g in a tio n . As well say th a t to use th e nam e G od, o r q u o te a te x t of sc rip tu re , in a p o litical discu ssion o r w rite A. D. 1908, in a legal d o cu m en t would favor union of ch u rc h an d s ta te , such th o u g h ts are u n w o rth y a m an of o rd in a ry sense. M r. B ryan is a d ev o u t b eliev er in th e Bible as th e w ord of God to m en. A sin cere follow er of C h rist. M r. T aft rejects Je su s C h ris t as th e son of G od, an d Savior of m en. All because h e is and has l>een a real refo rm er, yet h e sta n d s before th e A m erican v oter clean h an d ed an d w ith o u t th e sm ell of fire upon h is g a rm e n ts, a n d th o u g h d e feated tw ice for th e high office, he has a stro n g er hold upon th e people th a n ev er before w hile it is c le a r as lig h t itself th a t if M r. T a ft is defeated now th a t no pow er on e a rth could give him a second n o m in a tio n . W hy th is differ ence l>etween th ese tw o m en? I t sh o u ld be e v id e n t to every th o u g h tfu l m an. One re a lly loves G od an d his fellow m en, reveres G od’s w ord. Bows in th e sim p licity of h is faith to th e sa v io r of m en, as L ord an d K in g believes th a t rig h t o u g h t to an d finally m u st prevail, an d th erefo re h as th e courage to sta n d for th e rig h t as h e sees it. H is personal h a b its a re clean an d p ure. E very tim e we h ave a presid en tial election th e re is a tig h tn e ss in th e m oney m a rk e t an d a howl goes up th a t if th e rep u b lican n om inee is n ot elected th e re will be panics, h ard tim es an d th e Lord only know s w h a t else. From th e s ta n d p o in t of an in d e p e n d e n t A m erican citizen, we believe,* if th is is a c tu a llv th e condition of affairs in th e U n ite d S tates, th a t th e sooner we discard a form of rep resen a- tiv e g o v ern m en t and a d o p t a m onarch- ial one, th e b e tte r for th e people.
