Reuben Plnkbam, a native o f Nan tucket, made bis first trip us third lieu tenant ou the ship Potuinuc, which crossed the north Pacific, a region little known to naval vessels In the early thirties. Plnkbam had been on several whaling voyages, and wus fa m iliar with those waters. The uutbor o f “ T h e Island o f Nantucket" says that one day, near sunset, he bad the watch, w hile the commodore wus pac ing up and down the deck. Suddenly Plnkbam gave the order, "M an the weather braces!" “ W h at’a that fo r?" asked the com modore. “ W e shall have wind In a moment.” The commodore went to the lee rail aud scanned the sea and sky. “ I see no slgus o f wind,” he returned. "L e t the men leave the braces.” The crew dropped the ropes. “ Keep hold o f the braces, every man o f yo u !" called out Plnkbam, and the men resumed their grasp. The com modore flushed with anger and ex claimed In peremptory tones: " L e t the men leave the braces!” and again the braces were dropped. "D on ’ t any o f you dare to drop the ropes!” shouted Plnkliam, shaking his trumpet at the craw, who once more took hold. Juat then the wind dropped entirely; not a breath stirred. "Tau t, taut! Haul, all o f you!” called Plnkbam, and the ponderous yards swung to reversed position. The wind came out o f the opposite qunrter and struck the ship like a sledge hammer. The vessel staggered, shook the spray from her bows and daahed ahead. The commodore disappeared Into his cabin without saying a word. Presently be sent the first lieutenant to relieve Plnkbam, requesting to see the latter Immediately. When Pink ham entered the cabin the commodore said: “ I consider, that I am Indebted to yon for all o f our lives; but I w ill tell you frankly If that wind hadn’t come I should ^have put you In Irons In two minutas.’’ An U n s q u a l 'c d an d C s m p l e t s Ra s u m « o f W h a t Y our Frla n d s ara and Hava Bsan Lately D oing. This great stock medicine Is a I money saver for stock raisers. It I Is a medicine, not a cheap food or I condition powder. Though put up | in coarser form than Thedford’s I Black-Draught, renowned for th e] cure of the digestion troubles of I persons, it bos the same qualities | of invigorating digestion, stirring | np the torpid liver and loosening j the constipated bowels for all stock | and poultry. It is carefully pre pared and its action is so healthful that stock grow and thrive with an occasional dose in their food. It cures hog cholera and makes hogs grow fat. It cures chicken cholera and roup and makes hens lay. It cures constipation, d ii‘ niper and t' colds in horses, murrain in cnttle, | and makes a draught animal do more work for the food consumed. I t gives animals and fowls of all kinds new life. Every farmer and taiser should certainly give it a [ trial. It costs 25c. a can and saves ten I times its price in profit.
