The two bent known varieties of
breeds of the goose ure the Toulouse
nml EinbJen. The Emtxleii is without
doubt the beet murket goose. Its plum­
age in white; bill, feet and legs orange
colored. They attain a large size. Emb­
den ganders, standard bred, full growu,
have attained to thirty pound* weight,
while gosiings have Touched twenty
pounds each, when fed for exhibition
purposes. Males among this breed not
uncommonly weigh twenty pounds, but
ordinarily they ruuge from fifteen to
eighteeu pounds. Embdeus mature ear­
ly. and tlie eggs are of large size, but
few in number compared with the pro­
lific China geese, but the latter are
much smaller in size than the Kmb-
dens. A profitable cross is given by
mating an African guilder with either
'foillouse or Embden geese. The Tou­
louse Is gray ou buck, sides and breast.
Stock geese should be fed shredded
hay. silage, etc., with u moderate allow­
ance of grain daily during winter
mouths. Geese do not male readily, and
consequently It Is best to place all stock
together several weeks or months, so as
to become acquainted with each other.
After mating a strong attachment
grows between the sexes. Four geese
may be allowed to one male. Shelter
ought always to be provided. While
the Embden lays fewer eggs at a
clutch, yet It can be depended upon
I to sit If w’unted. The goose should not
be allowed to sit. at least not until the
last clutch is laid. Better results are
obtained by employing bens as sitters.
The goose Is readily cured of broodi­
ness. By confining a week she will
generally begin laying aguln In two
weeks afterward. After two weeks’
