The State Agricultural Fair. ri :> Tho Stat6 Fair was a thing o f the past somo two weeks ago. W o have seen occasional notices o f it in some o f our exchanges but have met with no special eulogies of it in any insta- . nee, but on the contrary quite a num ber of adverse criticisms. And it can not bo donied that most of those crit icisms are just. W hile tha late Fair may have been, iu some respects, a success, In the main it failed of accom plishing the real ends for which a fair is instituted, viz, tl development of tho industries ai resources of the Country. If ti desigu wore simply to make it a sort o f pleasure resort, where people could go and camp for a weok, and meet aud visit friends, and attend upon shows and gambling gamos, then perhaps the last fair might be termed a success. W o protest, hew- ever, that this is not tho roal design o f a Stato fair. Our State fair ought preeminently to be made a place aud time of exhibit of the best produc tions o f tho best varieties both of stock, aud farm produce, of every part of the stato. Instead of this we find only a few Counties repre sented iu tho exhibits this year, and these of the most meager character. I f we are u # mistaken Polk County was not represented at all, and the same was true o f a large number of the counties of the state. This in dicates a woeful neglect Bomewhere. In the matter of horses, tho tenden cy at present seems to be to exhibit race stock, rather than horses that are of utility to the producing por tion of the country. iL ^ o horses may have their place, an of some pos sible value to tbe country, but such benefit, if it exists at all, is of so in finitesimal a character that it is d if ficult to get the honoat producing portion o f our population to see it. The facts are that the raising, ami exhibiting o f racehorses at the fairs results iu encouraging and perpe trating a damaging system of gumbling, the evils o f which ovor- ballanco any good that might other wise accrue frem them. G ood draft horses, and good plow horses is the kind of stock that will add to the material wealth o f tbe country. We are not disposed to attach blame to the o ffic e » of the society or the man agers of tho fair, because it i» im possible for them to obviate the dif ficulties complained of. The farm ers, themselves must be prepared to place on exhibition their best lines of stock, and their best varieties of vegetables and cearals, and also be prepared to sell to others these best varieties, so as to distribute them throughout tbe state. Thia is the only way to inprove the productions o f the country. It is certainly to be hoped that next year will find tho fair grounds full and running over with this class of exhibits; and in stead of bocths and stalls on every hand ier games and whisky mills, booths and stalls for the exhibition and sale of stock and produce of ex tra quality, for the benefit of all who wish to thus improve their produc- tfeHUk « r o n e s » h e r e b y g iv e n t h a t i am t h e AT duly qualified and acting aaalgne« uf th» MUU of DAVID M A E ll ELD, who n»a4e an a*»1giiBMat ou J uly t , IM S. and all p arti« having claim, again« | the aokl David Max fit Id should pronto I them U nut within three months from th* dats ol this notico, and all persons indebted should make immediate pay ng, of the A B i o t a s l a DUsaluc. interior do- 484 A nsLrH i 8 t ., B rooklyn , N .
