Gladstone's Elder Ilrothrr. Sir Thomas Gladstono usually at tended tho service at Westminster Abbey on Sunday afternoon when ho was in town, and ho was invariably mobbed when walking up and down tho navo afterward by people who mistook him for his younger brother whom ho greatly resembled, but Sir Thomas was taller and more stately in appearance. Sir Thomas lived and died a Tory of tho old Eldon type, and his consistency and tho plainness with which ho avowed his opinions mado him respected oven by his most bitter political opponents. Ho went to Ox ford in 1853 and voted against his bro ther when that statesman was opposed by Mr. Perceval, after ho had joined Lord Aberdeen's administration, and ho invariably inveighed against Mr. Gladstone's policy whenovcr ho mado a political speech, but personally they were on tho most cordial terms. Thoy also dilFcred in their church views, for Sir Thomas, who was a most dovout man, favored tho evan gelical side. Sir Thomas Gladstone's nlaco in Kincardineshire, Fasquo house, is a splendid mansion, and tho extensivo demesne is well wooded and very picturesque. Tho homo farm is ono of tho linest in Scotland. Sir Thomas inherited tho estates of Fasquo and Balbegno, which extend to 21,000 acres, from his father; and in 1S5G ho purchased Strachan and Glendyo from Lord Southesk for 70,000. Thises tato which extends to 20,000 acres of low ground, hill pastures, and grouso moors, is ono of tho best shootings in Scotland. Sir Thomas was a most rigorous game preserver for many years, but latterly his tenants had no causo to complain in this or any other respect, and ho was a most popular laird, and took a deep and intelligent interest in all agricultural n Hairs. Sir Thomas Gladstono was for some years attacho to tho British embassy in Paris, under Lord Stuart do Roth say, during tho reign of Charles X, and ho had many pood stories to re late about tho curious customs of tho old Bourbon court. Ho sat in the houso of commons from 1830 to 1837, and in 18C5 ho stood for Kincardine shire, but was defeated by tho lato Mr. Dyco Nicol of Balloge, who was tho first Liberal over returned from that county, as tho lato Sir Hugh Ar buthnot had then represented it as a Conservative for thirty-nino years, during which period ho was only onco opposed. London World. Jack's Visit to tho Natural History Society. Ono wet evening, however, Willie Ransom got Jack to go, just because there was nothing elso to do. There was a short paper being read on "Fish Scales." and a number of them were mounted for microscopical examina tion, of cotirso with a low power, say inch and liulf inch. Anything relat ing to fish or fishing was certain to gain Jack's attention, therefore a bet ter subject could not have been select ed to engago his notice. Besides, Jack had never yet even looked through a microscopol Ho felt a bit ashamed of this now; but there wero a couplo of microscopes present, and Jack deter mined to havo a good look through them. Tho scales of different sorts of British fishes were on view. Of course, fish scales are common enough : but who would think that eacli kind has its own pattern of scale, and that you could tell a species of fish by its scales? Tho paper showed that tho scales of fishes wero composed of tho samo ma terial, chitine, as tho feathers of birds, or tho hair and nails of animals a kind of substanco only found in the animal kingdom, ami never in the vegetable; that theso scales are devel oped in little pockets in tho fish's skin, which you can plainly seo for your self when a herring is scaled. They aro arranged all over tho fish's body liko tho tiles covering a roof, partly overlapping each other, as is seen by ono part of tho scalo being often dif ferent -from tho other. Jack looked through tho microscope and was delighted. Ho was always a reverent minded boy, and tho sight broko on his mind liko a new revela tion. How exquisitely chased and beautiful were tho markings, lines, dots and other peculiarities! Then tho scales which run along tho middle lino of tho fish wero shown him, and tho ducts perforating them, out of which tho mucus flows to anoint tho fish's body, and thus reduco tho fric tion of its rapid movement through tho water. Tho lad was half bewild ered at tho possibility of tho new knowledge. "Could anybody get to know about theso things?" ho asked Willio, who told him of course ho could, if ho would only take a little trouble. Dr. J. D. Taylor in Popular Science Monthly. In a Studio. "Is not that Ncilson?" I asked, in dicating a miniature sketch almost hidden Ay a fox skin and a Chinese fan. "Yes, tho artist replied, softly, "that is my greatest treasure. Let me tako it down for you." Tho picture was drawn on a gentlo man's linen cull". Neilson, as Juliet, leaned over a balcony a white robed ' flguro with flowing hair a crumpled ros'j in her hands, from which she idly tore tho petals. Pinned to one corner of tho cuff hung a Trlthcred bunch of violets. "Sho asked mo to visit Booth's," my friend explained, "toseoheras Juliet. I went, and this picture is ono of the results. A lifo long rcmembranco of that most beautiful woman is another I had no paer for drawing, and re moving ono of my cuffs, I mado tho Ekotch upon that. Miss Neilson saw it afterward in her dressing room, laughed, 6igned it with her autograph, and taking a bunch of violets which had been thrown carelessly on her dressing table, handed tho Uowers to mo with a bewitching smile. Thoy liavo been pinned to tho cuff ever since. No, I would not caro to part with tho picture, though I havo had plenty of opportunities to Bell it 1 never glance at it without thinking of poor Neilson as sho died in Paris, tear ing madly at tho couch on which she writhed ki her last agony. Somehow sho always comes back to me that way." New York Star. SAVED FltOM A DANGEK THAT 1IESET US ALL. Manufacturers of the Great Sierra Kid ney and Liver Cure. Samuel Mlnturn Peck King George) mill Shakespeare. A fashionablo authoress of tho last century was Miss Fanny Burnoy, whoso "Evelina" delighted Dr. John son and Sir Joshua Reynolds. When sho had become famous sho was the guest of Mrs. Delaney, a venerable, cultured lady, who lived at Windsor, not far from tho castlo where George III and Queen Charlotto resided. The king and queen frequently called on their neighbor, and shy Miss Fanny at such times sought her own room. But ono afternoon sho and Mrs. Do lunoy wero in thodrawing room, when suddenly tho door opened. A largo man entered, who shut tho door with out speaking. Tho star on his breast revealed to Miss Burnoy that sho stood in tho presenco of tho king. Sho ro treated to tho wall. Tho king ad vanced to his hostess and in n loud whisper asked if that was Miss Burney Upon being nssurnd that it was he drew near and entered into convorsa tion with her. "But what what how was it how camo you how happened it what what what?" ho asked, in his usual odd manner. Believing ho referred to "Evolinn," sho replied that it had been written at odd hours for umuso ment. "But your publishing your print ing how was that what what?" he asked: to which sho answered: "1 thought, sir, it would look well in print," at which ho was vastly amused.
