    Uo-phy Wut Satan.
In iho autumn of 1SC1, Morphy,
then on his way to tho Confederal
army near Manassas, was invited by
thoRov. R. R. IJarrison, of Richmond,
to spend tho evening with a number of
other distinguished guests at his resi
dence. After supper, while thevwero
assembled in the parlors, attention was
called to a colored engraving entitled
Jen d Lchecs," which was hanging in
tho room. It represented Satan, in
6tyl? and dress after tho German idea
of Mophistopheles, engaged in a game
of chess with a young man. The
board lay on a tomb, and tho guardian
angel of tho youth looked down with
deep sadness and interest upon the pc
Bition of tho pieces on tho board. Tho
young man's pieces represented tho
manly virtues, and many of them had
already been captui-ed. Satan's pieces
represented tho tempting vices. Tho
position of tho pieces as shown in tho
engraving, was one that had often been
studied with caro by tho Richmond
players, and tho young man's gamo
was regarded as hopeless. Tho posi
tion was set up in Morphy's presence,
and ho asked if tho position was cor
rect After careful comparision of
tho position on tho boanl and in tho
engraving, ho was answered in tho
allirmatiyo. Morphy then remarked,
in his quiet but always dignified man
ner, that ho believed bo could take
tho young man's position and win tho
game. All those who knew anything
of chess expressed surprise, but Mor
phy vindicated his belief in a short
time. IIo took tho young man's game
and played against each gentleman in
succession and won. Tho devil had no

Suggestive Hypnotism.
A lady boarded car 212, of tho
Franklin avenuo line, recently, and
sat directly opposito tho stove. A
gentleman was with her. After riding
a block sho told her escort that tho
heat of tho car was unbearable and at
her suggestion they moved nearer to
tho door. A passenger soon got on
and tho conductor coining in tocollcct
his faro sho asked him to open a venti
lator. Ho did so, politely. Soon tho
lady rapped on tho door with her um
brella. "Pleaso turn tho damper in tho
stove 1" said she.
"Certainly, madam," said tho con
ductor, and tho damper was turned.
In a few minutes tho lady began
fanning herself vigorously with a
hymn book, and remarked that "Con
ductors didn't seem to havoany judg
ment about heating cars."
At this juueturo tho conductor re
entered tho car for another faro and
tho lutlv said with asperity:
"Conductor, I wish you would leave
that door open. Tho heat from that
stovo is positively depressing."
"I am sorry to say, madam, but
there has been no tiro in that stovo
today," said tho conductor, and tho
thermometer instantly fell twenty
degrees. Brooklyn Eagle.

Among certain eastern nations tho
Englishman is supposed, from tho suc

remedies, to bo endowed with magic
powers, as a "medicino man." It is
not only tho peoplo classed as uncivil

a black art, which can do anything.
A woman recently visited tho ollico
of a physician who has becomo cele

quired: "If anybody had headaches in tho
back of their neck, and was so nervous
they could flv, do you think your bat
teries would help 'em?"
"I might recommend electricity,"
said tho doctor; "but I must know
more about your symptoms."
"Bless you, they aren't my symp

"Then come another day with tht
patient."
"But I can't bring her."
"Why not?"
"Because she lives out west. I know
you can telegraph that far, and I
thought maybe you could set your bat

THE TAILOR'S COMMENT-
Ho lias to Credit His Customer to Keep
tho Trade. Which Is llurd to Get.
"Fine custom tailoring: is not what
it used to be," said a Brooklyn man in
the business to an Eaglo reporter, "and
tho big houses aro just driving us to
tho wall. 1 suppose it is the samo in
everything else, but, of course, you
know our trade is the first to sutler
from competition of that kind."
"How is that?" .
"I am surprised that you ask mo .
such a question," replied tho tailor, j
slightly elevating his eyebrows. '
"when you should know, if you do
not, that wo must get a largo profit on
a custom made suit of clothes to mako
any money. Why? Because there
has been an unwritten law from time
immemorial which allows a man to
pay his tailor's bill last of all. Now,
a person can't get credit to any amount
in ono of tho oig establishments. If
ho orders a suit at such a place he must
leavo a deposit, and tho bolnnco is do-
mnrwlfvl wlisn tlin 0nthps ni-n lfliv-
ered. On the other hand, a tailor who !
has a small shop must cater to his cus
tomcrs by allowing credit. row, in
these times of sharp competition, high
rents and heavy expenses for skilled
labor, you will seo that it takes tho
profit upon a great many suits of
clothes to pay running expenses and
lav up something for dull times.
When there was less competition wo
could get along, but now, besido tho
big establishments whero they can get
up a suit of clothes for almost nothing,
there are innumerable shops whero
they sell fashionablo looking clothes
imitations of tho clothes wo keep, of
course for just about half tho money
wo can sell the real goods for. In for
mer years, tho fino custom tailors and
tho ready made stores monopolized the
business. Neither interfered with tho
trade of tho other, and consequently
wo had a certain hold on our custom
ers, who, in order to get now clothes
of us, would pay their bills rather
than bb foi-ccd into buying ready
mado garments. Now they leavo our
bills unpaid and go to ono of tho
cheap custom stores, pay cash for in
ferior goods, and then como back and
tell us how exorbitant our prices are.
Why, it's enough to drivo a man crazy
sometimes. Yes, tho better class of
small tailoring shops aro being driven
out of business, and it's too uad, for
tho establishments that aro driving
them out aro doing a much inferior
kind of work. Tho great object with
them is to mako up and sell fashion
ablo goods at a low figure. Now, I
will not say that tho material they uso
is all skoddy far from it It is sur
prising for what a small sum they can
sell reallv good clothes. How do they
do itf Well, in tho first place, they
rely to a great degree upon transient
trade. Secondly, tho credit system is
tabooed and they get cash for their
goods. Thirdly, they nay tho lowest
wages i6ssiblo to their lielp. Fourth
ly, they do not pretend to put tho
finish on their goods that a first class
tailor does. A man argues in this way
when he patronizes ono of theso shops:
IIo says to himself: 'I havo been pay
ing $10 for trousers, whilo hero is n
man who says ho can get mo up a
Eair equally good for $S. I know that
o can tdo'it, but I also know that for
lit anl appearance his 8 trousers will

$1G Jair, coiisequontly I will buy tho
S onus and wlien they nro worn out 1
win iet tinotlier iuir. niivinir for both
jiairs what 1 would ordinarily pay for
ouo.' Now, you tee, if his argument
iaapcxxl oijo ho would bo very fool
ish if ho did not take udvantagoof tho
cheaper man. After all," concluded
tho tailor, sighing, "if i- weren't that
wo wero eijKfteu to givo cuch long
credit 1 dou t know that wo would bo
any worso oil than our neighbors.
That is what is killing us." Brooklyn

Mrs. Helen I'. Stcrrctt,in n rci cnt tinm
licr of tliu l'orum, cnntrilmtcs tm article
ontlllcd " I lonsckcciiiif,' in tliu Future."
In it slie tells how in u fuwycnrsuk'ctricitjr
will supply lij;lit lor the hotnc, the latnilr
in ikiiif; nnd wnshiiig will lie done outside,,
nnd there will he so little work in the
household tluit tho occupation of the do
tucstie servmit will he gonu.,
Hut Mrs. Sterrett's article is simply a
prediction, and has no more than a pausing
interest for tliu ladies who live, in 1890.
'Fliuir social tinil household caret are strain
ing their delicate, nervous system, and the.
result is terrible. Headaches, hackiiclies,
and womanly ills aro growing alarmingly
common. Many of them find that mem
ory is failing; they nre unable to recall
the names of friends or tell whether they
have performed Home of their usual house
hold duties.
Their nerves nre in such a condition
that very slight causes, or perhaps no cause
at all, may irritate theiu. Lifo grows to he
a burden. There is no need for despair,
but there is great need of caution. Their
nerves should he built up, life fortified,
and brain restored with that remarkable
preparation, Paine's Celery Compound.
Instead of the depressed and languid feel
ings, lifter the Com pound has been used,
they will feel active, vigorous, and happy.
To thoo who are weak and failing, and
dcsiie health and happiness instead of ill
ness and misery, wo earnestly urge that
they act upon this advice.
