SOUTH SEA CUSTOMS. wrecked Sailors Feasted by Royalty. Drlnkinc Kava with tho Natives. Even at this'lato pcriotl in tho Nine teenth century, when tho people nro supposed to know something of almost every habitablo spot upon the globe, they continually meet with something now in tho habits and customs of races living m somo rcmoto part of tho world. Members of tho crew of the ship John Brycc, which was wrecked in tho South Pacific, givo n graphic account ot uio drinking of "kava" by tho natives of tho island upon which they landed after beinrr m an onen boat soven days. It was tho island of Jdanus, located about 18 degrees south latitudo ind 17G degrees west longi tude. Tbcro is only ono white resi dent there an Englishman. After tho arrival of tho shinwreckwl party King Malatua, who reigns over uio utno island, gave them a banquet, which is thus described by John "Wilko, ono of tho crow: His majesty issued an order to his subjects to bring in tho material for tho dinner, which they did. It was served in a largo bamboo housoat2 o'clock in the afternoon, banana leaves being spread on tho lloor for a table cover. Tho king sat at tho head with his chiefs'on his right. Capt. Murphy was to occupy tho seat to his left, but, as ho was ill, tho king's daughter took tho seat. A crowd of natives wero ranged around tho walls of tho house, while women and girls wero singing and dancing on tho outside for tho amusement of tho guests. Tho bill of faro consisted of raw fish, fish blood sauce, cocoanuts, cocoanutmilk, fowls, roasted pig and sweet potatoes. After tho dinner two young girls wero sent out to dig up somo kava roots, and when they returned with tho required quantity they wero ushered into tho banqueting hall. They washed tho roots and then sat down in front of a largo basin partly filled with water. Each maiden was provided with a sort of ladle, which was fastened under her chin by means of thongs passed over tho head. A root was then taken by each young lady and tho process of mastication commenced. As thoy chewed tho saliva ran out of each corner of their mouth and into tho ladlo prepared to receive it under their chin. As soon as it becamo full it was taken oil' and emptied into tho basin. When tho root was sufficiently chowed it also was spat into tho basin. When all tho reots had been treated in this manner tho girls proceeded to rub tho stuiF thoy had chowed between their hands and wrung and squeezed tho juico out of it, throwing tho refuso away. The liquid in tho basin was then stirred up, cocoanuts shell cups wero Eroduced. and tho decoction was anded to each of tho guests by tho ladies who had done tho chewing. Wo wero warned by tho Englishman in an undertono that to refuso would givo offense, so each gallant tar par took thereof with expressions and feel ings akin to that of tho small boy who was forced to swallow a doso of salts. It tasted and looked justliko soapsuds, and another doso in my caso would certainly havo acted as an emetic. The natives are very fond of it and drink it readily. It has a most peculiar effect upon tho human system. You will seo a rinjr of natives drink ing kavat and apparently nothing the matter with them, each man talki ng and acting in n perfectly rational manner; but let ono of them attempt to rise and you will notice the differ ence. Ho is drunk from his waist to his feet, while his upper story has not been affected at all. When wo had finished our meal tho nativo men nnd women sat down, tho festival being continued until 11 o'clock. After eight days on tho isl and wo wero taken to Apia, Somoa, and thero wo shipped for liomo. San Francisco Chronicle. 'JudB" Wise, of Virginia. John S. Wise is a noted dog man not a "Russian dog faced man," but a lover of and authority upon dogs. Dear Sm: I hope you will not consider me tedious if I tell a little experience, such as may not have come under your observation. About fifteen years ago a bright red spot, about the sizo of n pea, came on one side of th i end of my nose. It was a source of grent annoyance to mo nnd great anxiety to my friends, who feared the spot might be a cancer. It seemed strange such a thing would come on my face, for 1113' health has always been good and I never had so much as a pimple on my skin. I did not know what to do for tile trouble. Thero was a throbbing pain all tho while, and last fall, when the cold weather set In, the spot became limn ing red and hard, null remained so. It be came vety sore to the touch and hot. Tim naiu was a throbbing, severe pain. Then I became truly alarmed, for tho thing was becoming worse, nnd some timo in Febru ary I remembered that you recommended M water for the eyes when they wero In flamed; so I npplied this to my nose one evening and was sure Unit with tills one application the inflammation was lessened, I kept up the treatment n week, and my nose seemed well. I continued taking tho medicine for six weeks, nnd at tho end of that time the purple spot was entirely gone, nnd there is no truce of the thing left. Tho redness has also entirely disap peared. I could not be thankful enough that I had heard of your medicines nud knew what to use. Respectfully, Mits. J. Pimvis.
