Tho eleventh census of tho Unitct
States will bo tuhen during tho month
of Juno. Tho census enumerators
hegun tlieir work on Monday, Juno
2, and will visit every housu and ask
questions concerning ovory person and
every family in tho United .States. The
questions that will ho asked call for
tho naino of every person residing in
tho United States on tho first dav of
June, with tlieir sex and anv, and
whether white, black, mulatto, quad
roon octoroon, or Chinese, Japanese, or
Indian. Inquiry will be made also of ov
cry port-on as lo whether they aro single,
married, widowed, or divorced, and,
if married, whether married during tho
census year. Tho place of birth of
each perhon, and Iho place of birth of
tho father and mother of each portion,
will also bo called for, as well as
atalonient as to the prollotsion, trade,
or occupation followed and the nuin
her of months unemployed during the
census year. For all persons ton years
of age or ovur a return must bo made
by tho enumerator as to tho number
ablo to road and write, and also tho
number who can speak ICnglish tho
particular language or dialect spoken
by thorn will bo ascertained. For
amnion oi tcnooi age, also too num
ber of months thev attended school
will bo recorded by tli Jconsus enumera
tors. In tho caio of mothers an in
quiry will Lo made an to tho number
of children they havo had, and tho
number of thoto children living at tho
present time. This inquiry is lo bo
mado of all women who aro or havo
boon married, including all who aro
widows or havo been divorced. Kor-oign-born
males" of adult ago, that if,
21 years of ago or over, will bo asked
(is to tho number of years they havo boon
in tho United States, and whether they
aro naturalized or havo taken out na
turalization papers. Of tho head of
each family visited tho question will
bo asked as to the number of persons
in tho family, and whether his homo
is owned or hired; also, if owned,
wliuthor tho homo is free from mort
gago incumbrance. If the head of tho
family is a farmer, similar inquiries
will bo iniido concerning tho owner
ship of tho farm. In addition to these
inquiries, all of which aro mado on tho
population schedule, tho law under
which tho census is taken makes tho
provision for special inquiries concer
ning such of tho population as may
bo mentally or physically defective in
any respect, that is, insane, feeble
minded, deaf, blind, or crippled, or
who may bo tomporaiily disabled by
sickness, disease, or accident at tho
time of tho enumerator's visit. Cer
tain special inquiries will also ho mado
concerning 'inmates of prisons and ro
formatorio.1 and of charitable and be
nevolent institutions. lies ides this,
a statement will bo called for concern
ing all persons who havo died during
tho census year, giving their name,
ago, so.v, occupation, and cause of
death.

Mrs. K. T. Smith, Miss Carrie Ilut

Monday from a week's visit to La
Grande.
Dick Duncan has got the logging
contract and has moved up ready to
go to work, but tho rainy weather is
putting tho work hack.
Dunham Wright has got over tho
measles to that ho can talk some.
Everybody knows that it is a task for
Dunham to talk much at any time.
Tho election passed off" quietly.
Votes for Union wero thick around
here. Sanford Shaw come homo from
tho sheep camp in order to voto for
Union, and on his way found a mare
that ho had given up as stolon as
sho had been gone about a year.
Moral Do tho right thing and you
will bo rewarded.
It is reported that La Grande voted
everything in tho shape of a human
that could ho found. 10 ven the pass
engers on tbo trains could haid'y es
cape. Tho ktt-klux wero honest com
pared to tho La (handers. Wo should
not blame them however, for accord
ing to the doctrine of tome creeds it
was foreordained from tho foundation
of tho world that La Grande should
do just what it has dono and is doing.
Tho mill company havo got their
boiler and engine homo and in place.
They will start to i awing in a day or
two if the weather will permit. When
they wore bringing their boiler around
by way of Tolocasct, tboy lost a four

Anyone finding it and leaving it at

preached to the good people of Wolf
creek. Tho sermon was good; but
wo will havo to take exception to tho
alter part, hccaiibo no true christian
would make tho assertion, "unless you
aro dipped under tho liquid wave you
vill ho lost." Such an assertion is
not consistent with tho touching of tho
bible. Wo are of tho opinion that
there aro other baptisms than water.
