VANDERB1LVS FIRST BOAT. Bomo Oood StnrlrK of the founder ir the I'Hinll.r oCMIIlloniitrci. Tho readinp piven recently by Mrs. Coventry Waddell at her Stuyvexant Square, homo served to bring- out many Interesting new anecdotes of Commo dore. Vamlerbilt, Mrs. Waddell's friend ship with the founder of the Vamlerbilt family was life-lonp and her recollec tions of the great money-getter are of a nature to cast a strong light upon bis personality. The following story illus trative of his energy and push in early youth was told. It is a well-known fact that for years Commodore Vamlerbilt sailed a "per iauger" and in it took daily a cargo of green groceries to the New York mar ket. The. shrewd way in which ho be camo skipper of bis ilrst craft is thor oughly characteristic. It seems that at the ago of sixteen "Xeilly'' had devel oped a strong affection for rowing, sail ing and other water sports. An old Staton Island fisherman had a sail-boat which he ottered to sell for $100, and "Noilly" thought that if ho could only become the owner of this particular boat bo would indeed bo happy. He hadn't tbo money, however, and as a last re source, applied to his mother. "Xeilly," she said, "you see that eight-acre lot out there," pointing to an unpromising-looking stony field. "Xeilly" said ho did. '"Well, if you will plow, harrow and seed that lot you shall have the S100." "Xeilly" induced several boys of the neighborhood by promises of jolly excursions, to turn in and help him. In a week they bad the job done, and tbo SI 00 was paid over. "Xeilly" then beat the owner of the boat down to Stl."i, and purchased the craft at that price. The Commodore to tbo end of bis days never ceased to re gret that on his Ilrst sail he broke a hold in the boat's bottom that it cost S. to re pair. Mrs. Waddell once remarked to the Commodore, "1 dare say, many wealthy Xow-Yorkers would he happy if they had pockets in their shrouds, in which they could carry to the next world the wealth they accumulate in this." "Ah. no,'" replied Mr. Vamlerbilt. "If shrouds had pockets the strife and tur moil on Wall street would be increased four-fold." Atone time, whilo living on Staten Island, the Commodore had an exasper atingly balky horse. Me never could be sure that the brute wouldn't stop in the middle of the road, and ho often walked in preference to taking chances with the animal. One day ho started out and had driven only about half a mile when the beast came to a (lead halt. An en onergetic belaboring, backing and saw ing had no effect and tho Commodore turned airi'iid and went home. lie got a bag of lun.p-sugar and again started out, leading the horse and feeding him a lump of sugar every few stops. This ho continued until the place where the horse balked was passed, after which he got in and had no dilliculty in driving to his journey's end. In telling tho story to Airs. Waddell, he said: "1 have tried the same course of procedure with wom en and it has always proved effective." X. V. Tribune. WHERE BIRDS SUMMER. Tho Northern Itrcetliiitf Oriuinils of Many Migratory I'owK. Until tho acquisition of Alaska by tho United States, it was a wonder where certain wild fowl went when they mi grated from temperate climes on tho ap proach of summer, as well as snowbirds and other small species of the feathered tribe. It was afterward found that their habitat in summer was tho waters of Alaska, tho Yukon river and tho lakes of that hyberborciin region. A reporter lately interviewed C. .1. (5roen, of Xor ton Sound, Alaska, and ho continued tho statement of Dal and others. "Peo ple wonder whore tho wild fowl come froim" said he. "They see the sandhill crane, wild goose, heron and other fowl every spring and fall pursue their un wearied way, but like tho wind, they do not know whence they como or whither they go. Up on Uolovino hay, on tho north shore of Xorton Sound, is tho breeding place of these fowls. "All the birds in creation, seemingly, go to that country to breed, fieese, ducks, swans and thousands upon thou sands of sand-1 ill cranes are swarming there all the time. They lay their eggs in tho bluestem grass in tho lowlands, and if you go up the river a little way from the bay the nolso of tho wild fowl is almost deafening. .Myriads of rob bins and swallows are there, as well a millions of magnificent grouse, wearinf red combs and feather moccasins. Thi grouse turns as white as snow in winter You can kill dozens of juicy teal duck orgrouso as fat as butter balls in a fe moments. CONCERNING CLOTHES. Mm. Cutlierw uuiI'h Homily on the. 'rohlem unit Worry of l)res. I would like to bo a large, fair angel with clean, white feathers linn and satiny as a gull's breast and my desire would bo that no moulting period I should ever overtako tho wearer of such a suit. Of all creation the human animal as somobody has already remarked is tho only one born without a permanent ' skin. From season to season he must change his outer covering. Enormous business has grown upon this misfortune of man. Consider tho vast dry-goods houses, the millionaire merchants, who fatten on women's vanity alone! I have oven heard of dealers growing rich sell ing neckties! It is startling to think what tremendous sums are paid every year for the movable coverings which wo wear, and soil, and cast aside. Hut the worst aspect of tho case is tho thought which goes to the making of all these skins, it is truly said no woman can bo well drsed rsed unless sho thinks out her costumes or pays some body to think them out. When a wom an does neither one nor tho other she falls into such gowns as como handy and passes in the crowd as a homely thing; when if a natural plumago her own good works had grown upon her sho might bo beautiful. My observation is that tho women who aro tho best dressers whoso clothes seem really a part of themselves stop right there. They do not ox tend into their houses and surroundings. There is no radiation from them of women's tastes. Their dressing-rooms and homes exist simply as places in which they Dorform tho rites of tho toilot. Out of endless chaos and confusion thoy ovolvo themselves. Their thoughts must bo of fabrics and colors and shapes as ad justed to their own persons. Tho monoy of a good dressmaker goes into gowns, bonnets and wraps; not into etchings, books, lino table linens, and china, and tho sterling silver dear to housewifely '" . , i Tho averago person is liko an actor; , tlm linoin f lil pnstiimn nhanpns him. 1 tlio change ol tils costumo cnanges mm. 1 phosphites; tne one supplying hiri-npi" " A, id tlw.ru i imtlilmr s-idilnr md funnier I lesh, the other giving nerve l'wcr and acting And tlieie is nolliing sauuor anu iunnier a f)nI(? Man lias been (5,000 years learning how to dress, and ho knows so little about it now that ho is constantly changing his outsido and paying away a large part of his yearly income on his "appearance." It must make tho angels feel sad. The Ilible says we shall bo "clothed upon" in the next state of being. That must mean that wo shall havo a steady, presentable skin one not to bo affected by climate; neither purchased tit a dry goods or clothing store, nor liable to grow out of fashion. Then I shall he me, my life appearing through ever.) part; not shrouded hy bunches of drapery or deformed by waxing and waning bus tles.
