AN EXPLANATION. NOTICE FOIl PUBLICATION. NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION. Pokti.and, On., Oct. 12, 18S0. HililTott ()i;r.ciriN SeorT: Upon mynrrivnl hero from an ex tended trip to Seattle and the Hound country, my attention was called to an article published in the Harney 1'ress cou.wrning myself, which, to fay the i leas', i. st malicious nwl slanderous Ho , ,. , . ... t . . piilb-luvl with the malicious intent ot injuring my roputntion and standing (Ittiinjr my nb&ence First, they accuse me of leaving during the niglit time. I did leave jiuit nt thu break of day and was but j eight miles on the road at sun rise. 1 , l ...... . .1. .;. i ... , nude no seciclof the time 1 was to leave Harney as it was generally tin - (let'Koul mat t luut to le in JiaKcr City a) aenrtuin time, and on account of a delay in turning the county Irons-j urer's nllice over to my successor, (who, j by the way, is the editor of the Harney Picks and appointed upon my recoiii-! meiidution) 1 lost one day's time that ! J should have been on the road, conse quently I started as soon as I could, expecting by bard driving, early and late, to be on time in Baker City. Ah for those debts, I did not at that time, or at any time since, owo to ex ceed .$7f)0 in Harney county, and there is not one of my ui editors nnsntisied at the present date as I can show by their own receipts. If there is any claim against me in Harney I don't know it. My agent, .1. Nat Hudson,! Esq., has had all my money, notes, accounts and other proporty in his hands ever hinco my departure, with instructions to pay all debts contracted by myself and remaining unpaid at that date. 1 left property in Harney of the value of $ lfiOO and as far as I can learn (through my agent) there has been no demand made on him for any sum of money oilier than what I have acknowledged to be due and owing. Immediately upon my arrival in Union 1 leceived a letter from Mr. O. V. Scott, of Ontario, stating that ho had received two letters from parties H.'.r.tf-y, (which lullcrs are now in Hitfe keeping) without solicitation on his p v:'.; etiUinj that I hud left llitniev in a hurry, le.iving all my creditors behind, and thai I was heading to ward Union, with other advice as to what he had better do in ease I was owing him anything, etc. Tint is the way the news i cached the 1'ii'ss, Ihiough the hands of n ma licious li'tr. In a letter, of recent dale, from Mr. Scott, be acknowlndges th lwcl-s mill iinfi.K I Itecks ami notes, receipt, of money, and lie further says- " ictor, I have at nil times hud all faith and confi dence in you that I could have in any man and now I know that your inten tions aie for the best and that there is an enemy of yours doing all he can against yon." By agreement with M: Kcoti, I was not to pay for those goods until I had gotten'ho money for them. I have repeatedly oU'ered to secure Mr. Scott and he has each time refused, caving that 1 was as good as any security. As to forgery, I know nothing about it, hence deny the charge, and further, that I believe it is a trumped up charge by the samo author as the other. Tlio.-e valuable papers of V. E. Allier son'8 were of a. privalo matter and any ono who may ho desire can write to Mr. Alberson anil learn that those pa per have been delivered to the proper partieMis per agiuenient. Dining my stay in Portland I have settled with Messrs. Slaver it Walker, ICnapp. llnrrell it Co., (ienrgo Pope it Co., Mason Emerson it Co, Bonham it Manner, Allen it Lewis, (Joldsinith, Lowenbiirg it Co. and other, paying to them over $1800 and own not one cent t any of them. I would be pleased for any who may foul so dis posed to write to any or all of the above mentioned iirms and ascertain for their own sati fact ion if the lore going statement is not true. Upon my lolurn from San I'rancisco I ovpeet to proceed at once to Harney, and if they are not satisfied with thu manner in which 1 left my business they ean have ample opportunity to adjust them with mo then and there. In,, the meantime 1 shall review) the law on slander and libel. I remain, Yours very truly, VICTOli J. MILLION. Is Cuiiiiimiuloii lui'iii-alio'. Ken 1 the following: Mr. C. 11 .Mollis. NowaiU.
