made among tho thirty-eight consul
ate generals. These positions pay

$5,000. Only one-fourth of tho con
sulates have boon filled by republicans,
although tho salaries average V2,500
per annum. In tho the third class
only tluoo out of twenty-four have
been filled. Tho salaries in this class
aro $1,000 per annum and fees. There
havo been no changes in tho eiglity

which pay only a few hundred dollars
per annum and aro given to porma
nent residents of the countries in

trict embracing .Maine had not been

the Maine delegation was solid for ono
candidate, and it appeared to tho

ment had not been made, To this
potulaut communication ho replied
that, as tho district comprised also tho
States of Vermont and Now Hamp
shire, and tho delegations from these
States had agreed upon candidates
from thoir respective States ho hesita
ted to tsoleot anyone until ho "could
moro fully investigate." Think of
talking to a Maine man of tho politi
cal rights of tho States of Vermont
and Now Hampshire compared with
those of tho mighty commonwealth of
Maine!
Despite tho alleged coolness between
Col. Dudley and President Harrison
few men havo a greater intluenco than
Col. Dudley in tho departments, All

pcoplu who wish him to endorse them
for appointments to clerkships in this
