A tlNli-cloth hung on a door-knob is n siun of death in a family. The corpse must not pass twieo over tiny part of tho same road. To danco on tho ground indicates disaster or death within a year. Whoever works on a slek person's dress ho or sho will dio within a year. If a hoe bo carried through a house some one will dio before tho year is out. If thirteen sit at a tablo the ono who rises lirst will not live through the year. Tho person on whom tho eyes of a dying person last rest will bo the lirst to die. Whoever counts tho carriages at n passing funeral will dio within the year. To break a looking-glass is a sign of death in tho family beforo tho year closos. If threo persons look at the same time into a mirror ono will dio within the year. . Tho clock should bo stopped at the time of death, as its running will bring ill luck. If one dies, and no rigor mortis en sues, it indicates a speedy second death in the family. If n hear.so is drawn by two white horses deatli in the neighborhood will occur in a month. It is unlucky in a funeral for those present to repass tho house where death has occurred. If rain falls on a now-mado grave thero will be another death in the fam ily within tho year. If tho grave is left open over Sunday another death will occur beforo tho Sunday following. To keep tho corpse in tho house over Sunday will bring death in the family beforo tho year is out. It is unlucky to pass through a funeral, either between tho carriages or the liles of mourners on foot. If rain falls into an open grave an other burial in tho cemetery will occur within three days. At a funeral entering a church beforo tho mourners means death to some of tho entering party. To put on a bonnet or hat of one In mourning is tho sign that you will wear one before tho year is out. If any ono conies to a funeral after the procession starts another death will occur in tho samo house. In Switzerland, if a grave is left open over Sunday, it is said that within four weeks one of the village will dio. If, during sickness, a pair of shears bo dropped in such a manner that tho point sticks into tho iloor, it indicates the death of tho sick person. When a woman who has been sow ing puts her thimble on the tablo as sho sits down to eat, it is a sign that sho will be loft a widow if sho marries. A common saying in Knglaud is: "Happy is the eorpso the rain falls on." This belief exists also in the United Slates. Thus it is said that if rain falls at tho time of tho funeral it is a sign that the dead has gone to Heaven. Chicago Mall. THE CARPET MOTH. Scverat Method of Attacking and I)e- Ht roving Till lloimcliolit I'rst. Where carpets aro used and only taken up onco a year at "house-cleaning," the conditions aro very favora ble for the carpet bug's increase, par ticularly whero tho house-cleaning is hurriedly done. When a house has once become infested, nothing but tho most energetic measure will com pletely rid it of tho pest, and in com plete riddance is tho only hope, as in a year a very fow individuals will so increase as to do great damage At house-cleaning time then, as many rooms should bo bared at onco as pos sible, and tho house-keeper should go carefully over tho rooms, removing" all dust, and with a hand-atomizer charged with bonzino should pull tho liquid into all tho Iloor cracks and under tho base boards until every crevice has been reached. The carpets themselves, after thorough beating, should bo lightly spntyod with tho saino sub stance, which will quickly evaporate, leaving no odor after a short time. Tho inflammability of bonzino should bo romomberod, however, and no light should bo brought near it. This dono. beforo relaying tho carpots, it will be well to pour into tho cracks a mcdor atoly thick mixture of plaster of Paris and water, which soon sots and fills them with a solid substance into which tho insects will not entor. Then lay around tho borders of tho room a width of tarred roofing-paper, and afterward relay tho carpets. This thorough treatment should answer in tho very worst cases, and in a house so cloanod tho insect will prob ably not regain a foothold during tho ensuing year. Cloth-covered furniture which may have also become infested should bo steamed or also treated with benzine, and chests or drawers in which infested clothing lias beon stored should bo thoroughly sprayed. Another method of treatment con sists in laying a damp cloth (an old towel or a folded sheot will do) smooth ly over tho suspected part of tho car pot, nnd Ironing it with a hot iron. Tho steam thus generated will pass through tho carpet and kill all thn In sects Immediately boncath. If not too laborious, an ontiro room could be treated to advantage In this way.
