o r Let Her lie Cherished With thTendcirue Hue to Her I'onltlon. How refreshing it is to boo a newly married maid bringing to her now homo a heart full o' lovo for all Its in mates; falling into her place as daugh ter and sister as naturally as though sho had been born thero; cherishing nn unabated attachment to her own relatives, and yot cordially identify ing herself with the circle which wed lock has gathered around her; neither intruding into matters which do not concern her, nor isolating herself from the family in a proud self-seelusion. but going through her proper orbit with order, energy, and meekness; with equal grace accepting and recip rocating kind olllces; ready with her counsel where counsel was solicited, and displaying, as occasion might re quiro It, that "power of being silent," which an old writer specifics as one of tho attr butos of a good wlfo; eager in distinguishing every spark of discord on its first appearance; and shedding over tho littlo world of homo the ge nial influence of an example which makes oven tho thoughtless among thim confess that that must bo a di vine religion which had molded a character of so much loveliness! Who can estimate tho valuo of such an acquisition to a family; a woman who brings into it a fresh infusion of taste, refinement and allection: "With gcntlo yet prevnlltng force, Intent upon her destined course; Graceful mid useful all she does, Ulessing and blest where'er sho goes;" who, instead of planting tho seeds of alienation among them, becomes a new bond of union; whoso truthful nature, soreno temperament and goutlo manners attract every heart to itself, and make her tho friend of all; and whoso alTectionato sympathy gilds their days of gladness with a brighter luster, and assuages tho bitterness of their sorrows. If thero aro households among you blessed with a daughter and sister liko this, seo that you do not only cherish her with tho tenderness due to her exalted worth, but copy hei virtues. And lot all tho families which embrace theso legal affinities cultivato that unselfish spirit which shines so conspicuously in tho character wo havo been contemplating. Tho want of this lies at tho root of a great por tion of tho discontent and unhappiness to bo found in families; for in tho habitual and intimato fellowship of homo thero can bo no solid enjoyment while each ono of tho family is dis posed to consult his own convenience or advantage, irrespective of the others. X. Y. Ledger. APOPLEXY IN SWINE. Oneoftlio ltc.HiilN of rattening Anlmnls In ii Short Time. Apoplexy is usually a dlseaso of fat hogs, although an animal that has long been thin or suffering from exces sive irritation of tho intestinal canal would also bo predisposed to it. It must bo understood that tho process of fattening an animal in a few weeks destroys tho equilibrium of the system, and in ono sense tho fatness is in itsolf disease. Tho storing up of fat in tho animal economy is always at tho ex pense of muscular development. Tho muscles becomo weak and llabby. All tho blood-vessols of tho system aro burrounded by a strong, tough, muscu lar coat that "n a state of perfect health will resist any force that tho heart's action can put upon theso canals. Hut tho fattening process weakens theso fibers; a sudden or unusual strain ruptures ono in tho brain, and wo call It apoplexy, not as common in tho as ono would expect, but It is hog oc- curs so often that tho breedors should understand It and know the right thing to do. It is impossible to foresee when this is going to occur. If tho rupturo is a very small ono, when tho blood Is oozing out in tiny drops, tho hog will sometimes bo found lying Insensible and breathing heavily. Xo effort will arouse it. It Is more usual to find a big fat hog lying dead, with no external marks or signs of the cause of death. Cut open tho skull carefully, and a clot of blood of greater or less extent will bo found inside. If alive, however, tie a stout cord above tho kneo and with a slick take a twist in tho cord until on tho inner side of tho leg below tho kneo tho brachial vein can bo felt. Open It with a sharp pointed knife, and if tho blood will run tako a pint and a half or a quart. Don't guess at it An ounce of blood sprend over tho ground or on tho iloor lias beon mistaken for a pint. If tho bleeding is to do any good, thoro must bo considorablo takon. If tho broken vein is a small ono, and tho caso is ob served soon after It occurred, tho ani mal may bo saved. If it partially re vives It will bo propor to orncuuto tho bowels. A largo stock syrlngo would bo valuable hero to throw up a quart of warm water. In most cases, how ever, tho owner will havo a clianeo to sell the .animal for soap-fat.- Killing Squirrel. This is tho very best time of tho year to kill off theso pests. A littlo expense in this month will Havo much time and trouble later on. Wo havo nover found anything give so murh sat isfaction in tho long run as tho prepared jwisoned wheat. If this is used in reason able quantities, cither on tho very edi?o rp just inside tho squirrel hole, tho smiir 'rrols will eat it greedily; thero is littlo risk of killing off birdH and practically n risk at all of injuring livo-stocic, ns tho irrain soon becomes so scattered that what nny ono animal bigger than a squirrel could get hold of Mould lo littlo more than a medicinal dose. Tho material is cheap; it ran Ik distributed by ono man, and does tho work as completely ns any thing wo know of. Thero aro several brands on tho market, some of which aro usoloftJ. At tho h'outhor farm we havo . generally mod Wakolee's, and it has ilono very good work. Han Leandro He- j Krtcr, I A thei at l)ut)ii.1.io stole a barrel of eggs, but because tho warrant dirt not specify that they were hens' eggs instead of goose, or bird or alligntot eggs, ho was turned looso and allowed to go. Tho number of Jamaica G Ingot drunkards Is said to bo increasing at an alarming rate. A confirmed drunk ard takes four ounces of tho fiery lluid at one time, and iho effects are oven worse than those of whisky. Don't got up an excitement in the hen house. If you want chickens for dinner to-morrow take them quietly off the roost to-night. Frightening a hen out of her wits is as bad as dog ging a cow. "You did not pay very close at attention to tho sermon, I fear, this morning." "O, yes. 1 did, mamma." "Well, what did tho minister say?"' "He said the picnic would start at ten o'clock Thursday morning, and, O ma, can 1 go?" A taxidermist, of Belfast. Me., in preparing to mount a great horned owl. found tho owl's body full of por cupine quills. Tho ilesh was literally packed full of them, as well as tho rool of tho mouth. 'Iho owl evidently had dined on hedgehog. A unique milk cure is established in Xormandy. Phila delphia Heeord. a man of tho humbler classes en tered a public library in Loudon and asked for a book, saying in reply to a question that ho wanted "'Omer." The next Inquiry was whether he would havo a Greek text or a transla tion, to which ho gavo tho following roply.
