TWvr OREGON SCOUT , . Ai s K JOM-. - - I i" i : The Oregon Scout has (is large a ri.vc lation as any tiro papers in (his sec Hon of the State, combined) and is cor respondingly valuable as an advertising medium. , I Thursday, Jan. 31, ISSfhi Snb'crliitluns to tlie Sulislily Hunt it:il!rmil 4 Tin subscriptions to the Hunt rail road subsidy in this city is moving along slowly, but in a very satisfactory manner. Some $-15,000 is now on the paper, which hits been subscribed in sums varying from !?o000 to $2-0. Some three or four of our heaviest tax payers and men who are expected to subscribe liberally are out of the coun try and cannot be seen at this time. No subseiiplions for less than the aboVe- amounts have been taken yet, nlthouuh there are a hundred men in this precinct who will subscribe in cuius ! varying from one to two hundred dol lars each. We can assure the county at large that Union preuint will do its share, and more than its share in rais ing the subsidy. If other points do as well, the rumble of Hunt's raihoad cars will bo heard thioughout the valley before next winter. In a ISncl Humor. Tho Pendletoi. Tribune savs: The Ln tirande Gazette is exceedingly ill- tempered over tho proposed change of county scat and descends to personal abuse simply because, the Tribune has fit. to allude to the matter. J'rom Cornucopia. Mr. Henry Rust, of the Pacific Brewery, returned a day or so since from a visit to Cornucopia, the seat of the Pine Cieek mines, and ton ro orl or ho state.-; that business at that camp is very good considering the winter season and the people there are hope ful of tho future of tho mines. -Mine owners arc doing a large amount of development work and the ore veins are widening out ami becoming richer as work progresses. The lied Jacket mine, owned by tho Oregon Cold Min ing Company, is yielding largo bodies of gold sulohurets and hundreds of tons of ore is now ready to be hauled to the mill for reduction. Tho com pany will start up the mill as soon as the weather permits and a good divi dend to the enterprising company will undoubtedly bo the result. Meritocrat. Ho Takes tlie Cake La Grande comes to the front with tho meanest man on earth. His name is Jhowser. He told Jim U.irkins a half interest in a cow and then leftued to divide the milk, maintaining that Harkins owned the front half. Last week the cow hooked him and he has brought suit befoie Justice Kllsworth against Harkina for damages. Ju order to compromise the matter Harkins offered to sot a price, and give or take, so that one or tho other might be sole possessor of tho animal, but Browser wouldn't do it, and swears that tho only way that cow shall be divided it. to cut her in two with a cross-cut saw. Uiowser also wants to divide the county and raise sheol with the county seat, and Harkins doesn't. That's the dif ference in the style of the two men. Siiinlliiox lit Walla Wnlln. ., . Mr. Payne, of the linn of Payno Urns., of Walls Wallu, says of Mr. Hunt's road in that country that its advent raised fiinn property along the line from five to cloven dollar-" per acre; that the advance in prop erty in tlie city had increased much more than was tliouejit it would, while tlie saving in a business point of view hod been in ex cess of the subsidy of 100,001) asked by Mr. Hunt. These aiv telling facts. The incentive to the people of .Smutuer ville and vicinity, and Indian valley, to subscribe liberally to tho Hunt railroad subsidy is very great. If tho Hunt road is built, there will in nil probability be a branch road from l.a Grande to tho Wal lowa country, which will give them two ompeting lines.
