Ocuon, Italy, Doc. 12 1888 Editok Oitnao.v From Thinking a few lines from tho far ofT lnnd of limits, ami (lowers, und sunny skies', might he of some interest to the people of your part of the globe I take the liberty of favoring you (if ho it may bo culled) with n few crude linos that prolrny the he-unties of Italia, to my own unpoetic fancy and eye. We stopped oil' the "(Jermaiiia" this briclit and rofreshinir morning on to the crowded wharves of Ci'cno.a. About i ten yVmeiicans disembarked here all tourists. The bay is alive with tiny .white sailed boats, maned by tho soft-eyed Italian boys, who ply the thin and del icate little oars witli a dexterous hand. Some large vessels are lying at anchor oh" shore, some arc continually arriving and occasionally a large, ponderous, man-of-war, or merchant craft weigh anchor, and leisurely drifts away down tho shining boi-om of tho .Mediter ranean farther and farther, until only a tiny spec): is visible above the watery horizon. We wended our way through the thick crowd to "Main street,', or the wide, white walled promenade that stretches out to the foot hills, where tho little houses stand like some lono little tombstone, in tho distance on the brow of one of Ftalia's llowcry hills. People in dense throngs crowd the way. but at last, after patiently toiling along with valise in hand for a lirtlf-ii-jnile we found quarters that suited us. c3ur stopping place was a small, but neatly fitted cottage restaurant, situa ted on a commanding little knoll, wheie we could look lar sea-ward. It has been a tiresome day, and but for tho now, and striking scenc6 wo would admit of being weary. From our win dows to tho south, wo have one of tho rarest panoramas that is found. Im mediately below us is tho city. The sun is fast sinking down over tho wes tern peaks, and as ho sends a few labt fragments streaming across tho distant bosom of tho wave-ribbed Moditcrrani an, a picture presents itself to our view that would lend a new inspiration to the magic brush of Michael Angello but alas, poor Angela looked on scenes like this long years before our feet o'er tread tho classic shores of Italy. Tho cosy town lies nestled at our feet, now; the spiies of the many churches ami cathedrals are gilded with a few stray rays, and tho droll looking little hous es that are clustered so closely togeth er look so soinbro in tho closing scenes of day. A sweet perfume comes steal ing down the air, laideu with coolness and vigor from tho far oil' snow-wreath-od Alps, and with the perfume from tho daintiest flowers that bloom in the Muiny nooks by river I'o. Mere, a few hundred yards east, is a bit of land scape anil such a place it seems tho straight and triangular roads mark every field, and tho long rows of bright green grape vines stretch oil' to tho top of tlio hill; a ilower garden blooms down closo to tho pans-way; every line hero vies for tho quconship. (iradually tho scones grow darker, tho town is silent, save tho silvery tinkle of the bolls on tho Hooks of goats that como skipping clown tho llowery path way to their folds by tho sea. Tho air grows richer with its deoponing, and the influence scoms like a vigor of life breathed from tho very flowers. Tho i gentle "MVish.swasn" ot tlio siiouueu w.iv..- ..lonn linmWn the Mlonen now. waves alone breaks the silence now Tho tramp of foot has almost ceased, and now, clear on tho evening air, comes tho melodious strains of the curfew chant. Soft-eyed Italian mai dens, with sweet-voiced picalos, stand nt the grim cathedral arches, and on these small, delicate instruments they pipe tho richest melodies that Italian taste can construct, or Italian dexteri ty execute. Tho sound sinks and swells until the whole air seems re spoudant to its sweetness. Tho nut fiicinn's lingers drop from tho zealous task and tho streets are as silent as tho tomb. Thu full moon comes Hunting up irom her bed behind tho green wreathed eastern hills, and tho sea onco more glows like a silver-riillled shoot, "with tlio broken waves lea ping si lently over one another ; tho softest skies look down on tlio sleeping scone; the nioon-beamH leap along down the wide, -white promenade, until it teems a silver-lined chalice. Oh, could poor old Columbus Mop into his native city to-night. Its shining steeples, its gor geous palaces, tlio long, white, ghost like eolonadcs and tlio sombre busts of Fra Oiovanna. All these would make his liosoin swell with piide at tlio fact of his having boon onco a son of theso fair scones. Italy is pro-eminent in tho natural beauties, if her Ciesar and her Cicero nro withered to dust. Columbus could wander bnok to his rusty, time-worn clmiiics, and his soinbro tomb in the sanctuary vaults of tho old cathedral of Vallodollid with a good will, if his tlini eyes could rest for a few hours on tho changed scenes of his childhood, Tlio glories of Italy still live; her ilowers shall never fade; hor skies shall lie ever cloudless ; her name, one decked in tho rarest festoons from the gardens of time. The fierce Hun could not crush beneath his heel the soil that nourished the genius. He may break the marble bust of Julius Ciesar, but tlio pen and bword of Ctesar shall nov or rust nor decay.
