Voters of Oregon, take your choice. Jay Go ri.i), Carnegie and the rest of that ilk are all republicans, and the way their hearts bleed for the laboring man, and the way they pour out their money to "protect" him, Is truly Im mune and praiseworthy. Thef.o aro both republican recipes and all who vole for llarri-ou should bo liovc they are correct. Jilt, iti.AiNK will not come to tins coast in the interest of Harrison and Morton. Ho intimates that if Califor nia is not safoly republican that it will bo useless to continue the fight. Then, too, there isn't enough of him to go 'round, and he Is so badly needed elsewhere. A roi.-DO-itoi. story is U'ltig circula ted in the prints that Levi P. Morton oneo fitted out a phi) with provisions for Ireland at a personal oxpense of $50,000, The fact is thatcontiibutioiiH from nil over the country fitted out the ship and Morion and others had the handling of the money only. JJi.ainj: knew, and his friends were iiwaro of the fact, that tho American pooplo would not elect him president. And yet the only hope of republicans to-day is that tho influence of thowiley Blaine will elect Harrison. It is a brit tle reud to lean on. It reminds us of tho blind trying to lead the blind. Tjik Scoi'T is a complete epitome of county news, tho happenings of nearly every section being written up each week by competent writers. Among our large corps of correspondents are ladies and gentlemen of extraordinary literary abiliiy, whose letters aro looked for and rend by hundreds with eagor interest. In tho Tipic-canoe ride now being taken by the republicans, tlioy linve evidently got into rough water and are brooming seasick. Tnr. The yearly exhibitions of this institution arc a "rent fa'ctor in building up and! making known the resources of our wonderful state, and should have the support of all. Wi: would like to ask republican con temporaries how it is thai hist year we exported only about $100,000 worth of woolon goods and imported '.M,000, 000 worth, and that too, undvr the highest tarill'over known in this gov ernment? How could foreigners pay our high duties and undersell us in our own markets? Why did wo not manu facture these goods? Why at tho time these goods were being imported wee many of our factories shut up and our laborers idlo? Thb Republican tells tho truth when it fays: "Capital is becoming more and more alarmed by the tinkering of the tariff." Yes, alarmed for fear it shall be placed upon an equal footing with labor. The marked force that the republican nominees aro being so oilmen ly supported iy capital, mo nopolies, trusts and combines of every nature is the most convincing argu ment that can bo adduced, that the republican party owes its life to them and they theirs to it. A t'HBAi' coat indicates :t cheap mini, says Mr. Harrison, That is precisely Mr. Harrison's idea of a man ; unless he is 'dressed in broadcloth and wears kid gloves, ho is a cheap creatine about on a level with mules. It was some of these "cheap men" Unit Mr. Harrison was disposed to shoot down in 1S77 for daring to as sert their rights, and resist the oppres sion of the railroad corporation, of which Mr. Harrison was uttornoy. Hut heap men have votes. lint Republican savs: "lhe anti labor press is without exception in fa vor of freo trade. This fact ought to set workingnicn to thinking. Take the principal free trade organs in Xew York tho New York Times, Herald, Harper's Weekly, Evening Post, Puck and vou will find that every ono is a bitter enemy of labor." This is a dou ble-jointed falsehood. Neither of the journals mentioned are tho enemies labor, nor do they advocate free trade, and the e.pcctatin that the statement will be believed carries with it the presumption that the reader is a fool, nom.TATiNa it must bo to intelligent republicans to have such a nonentity iib Harrison for their prosidoKtial nom inee. In tho extremity they aro now reduced 'to, they rarely think of him und look to him for no counsel or help, hut turn for their only hope to Maine. They inndo a mistake after nil Maine should have been nominated. Late events have demonstrated that if Maine coujd not have succoedod there is no chance for any other man in tho party. And yet. Maine know that his own chance for election was hopeless, and wisely declined. It is mighty cold comfort the republicans aro able to get by reviewing tho situation. : .. ' Tjik editor of tho H'icinydootuV is still worrying along uudor tho antago nnstie influences of his two hats. Last week the Hallison lint had decidedly the best of it. You ask: lias t lie government been immoral and wicked In its lin;un:ial plana all these years since rcbeldom Hew at its throat? We r.nswci , yes, in its plans of tax ation since 18G6. Since 1806 the gov ernment has rested the whole burden of national (axatiou on the consump tion of the people and not one cent on property or income. In lSGGprop erlv. capital and income -paid over 8200.000,000 in national taxes. Since then not a dollar. These taxes wcro repealed as being "odious and in quisitorial ," and the burden of pay ing our billions of national debt left as a tax on consumption. Ave the dcmoci als alone in characterizing this system as licious or unjust? Mr. Sheiinan in tho Senate in 1872 said, concerning ibis system: The public mind is nut yet prepared to apply the key to a genuine revenue reform. A few years of further experience will con vince the whole body of our peonlo that a system of national 'taxes which rots the, whole burden of taxation mi consumption and not oneecnt on property or Income is intrinsically unjust. While tho expenses of ihe National (iovernment are largely caused bv the protection of properly, it fs but riuht to require property to contribute to their payment. It will" not do to say that eaeh.iicr.-on consumes in proportion to his means, This is not true. Kvery one must see thatthe consuinpl ion on tho rich does not bear tho same relation to the con atiinptioii of the poor as the income- of the one doen to the wages (if the other. As wealth ueiuwnulatos this injusliej in the fundamental basis of our sjteni will be felt and forced upon the attention of Con gress. intrinsically unjust taxation is vi cious and inequitable taxation. AVc wonder if Sherman really meant what he said, or was lie ignorant of tho meaning of the terms ho used. A VOICE FROM L'XULAXJ). To show (he English idea of the American protective tariff, we quote a passage from a speech by Cladstone to the manufacturers of Leeds: I will say this, that as long as America adherusto the protective c.vsiein our com mercial primacy N secure. Nothing in tho world can wrest it from you while Amerie.i continue, to fetter her own strong hands and arms, and with these fettered arms is content to compete with you, who are free in neutral markets, And as long as Ameri ca follows tho doctrines now known as those of fair trade, you are perfectly safe, and you need not allow, any of you, even your !ight"st slumbers to be distui bed by fear thar America will take liom ou your commercial primacy, The foregoing from the speech of the greatest statesman England has pro duced, shows what F.ngland's smart men think ol America's foolish system of taxation, and it shows further that should the Mills bill, placing raw ma terial on the free list, become a law, that American manufacturers would drivo English goods from the markets of tho world. If those lunkheads who go around shouting that British free trade will ruin tho workingmon, had the intelligence to read and the hon estv to tell the truth about what thev do read, thoy would tell tho voters that there is not a statesman in (heat Britain to-day who is not in sympa thy with the republican party in its efforts to saddle on the American peo ple a system of federal taxation that is destined to entirely rob this nation of its foreign commercial industry. Thoy would also tell thorn that nino tenths of the pretended clippings from English papers favoring tho democrat ic pulley of tax reduction are forgeries and that tho ono tenth arc editorials bought and paid for by republican's money, wrung from tho protected manufacturers of this country. By placing raw materials on tho free list and leaving a fair protection on the manufactured articles, tho demo crats proposo to place our manufac turers on an equal footing with his foreign competitors for commercial ascendancy in foreign markets and at tho samo time lcavo him sutliciont pro tection at home to enable him to sup ply his homo market without compe tition, so long as Ic will do so at a reasonable porcontago above cost of production, and with but a moderate duty on tho ninuufautured goods they proposo to prevent tho osttiblNhinont of combination? and trusts which rob the consumers of iminufnoturod good?. And this U what fools and IIhi'soUooso to call "Dr-ltlsh free trade, ' ' 1 QUES- j ATTITUDE OF LABOR ORGA l XJZATIOXS. As an indication of the sentiment among the working classes of the peo ple, the action of the labor organiza tions may be taken. Resolute As sembly ZS'o. 1870, Knights of Labor, of Portland, Oregon, parsed the fol- lowing, among other resolutions on hard for the election of CicvoianiKind Thur i man next Novinibcr .o that "labor may have a hearing and not be trod down by railroad king'). This is as it should be, and .shows that tho workingnicn of this State arc ! getting their eves opened rapidly. There is no reason why the vote that elected Gov. l'cnnoyer should not be cast for Cleveland and Thurinan. The issue is almost identical If the peo ple look at it in that light, and wo do not seo how they 'can fail to do so, Oregon will go democratic. The Calif oriiinus are also awakening to a full realization of the situation. At a monster mass meeting of anti Chinese workingnicn held at the Me tropolitan Temple in San Francisco on the 10th insl. their expressions were emphatic and not to be mistaken. They declared for Cleveland nnd tariff reform with groat enthusiasm. The 'meeting was addressed by numerous speakers, among them Dennis Kear ney, who promised to make things "red hot" all over the Stale if he could raise sufhVicnt money to defray his traveling expenses. Ho said that if Harrison had his way he would have '-'50,000 pestifcrious Chinese marching to the polls in November and casting their votes for Harrison and Morton. He concluded by saying he was "chock full" of the subject and would say something more on an other occasion. Speaking on this subjoct the Indian apolis Labor Signal says: We have on our exchange list more than 300 labor papers. Of this number less than a dozen advocate a continuance of the pres ent tarill, while about ono hundred and thirty-live favor tariff reform. This is a fair 'index to the sentiment of organized labor on tho taritfissuc. Tin: county elections in Tcnncsec last week sottlcd two questions. In every county party lines were closely drawn, and the contest was hot, be causo it was known that on the result of these elections would hinge the re sult of the legislative, state and na tional elections this year. The repub licans made a desperate effort to cap ture the otlicc of sheriff, as in Tcnnc sec the sheriff appoints all election officers and and has control of the elec tion machinery. Hut in every county there were substantial democratic gains. , In many counties a democrat ic sheriff was elected for the first time in 'Jf years. In Davidson county, which went republican m 1880., tho democrats had nearly 4,000 majority. Shelby county, which once was close, went overwhelmingly democratic. It was a log cabin in his grandfather's timo; now it is a Chinese wash house. 1 low we progress. The death of Louis Hart, a farmer living near North J'owdcr, occurred last Monday. The illness of the de ceased was of short duration and the cause of death was cholera morbus. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn the loss of a good husband and father.
