THE LAST LAUGH. Consternation of the Congregation. Tho Wii dom of the Innocents. Adjoining nn out-of-the-way, but favorite summer resort, is h little Chapel in which religious Eorvices are held occasionally, as clergymen can be obtained, during the pleasure season. A visiting divine consented to preach one sabbath last summer, ami, notice being given, quite a congregation of hotel guests and resident neighbors assemblod. In opening tho services the preacher suggested that, as tho chapel was provided with no musical instrument, perhaps some one present would start a hymn, in which the con gregation could join. A brief pause ensued, and then the congregation wan conjulfed at hearing an old 1 tily strike up, in a cracked voice, "Believing we rejoice To see Uie cuss removed." As no one ''joined in," tho old lady did not proceed far with tho hymn, and an awkward contretemps seemed imminent. The clergyman was quick witted, however, and turned tho ludi crous incident to good account. He xuietly arose and anno meed as his tvxl the words, "Beheing we rejoice," from which he preached an excellent sermon, one that under the peculiar circumstances, made a deep impression. The old lady will probably never know why she caused such a sensa tion. She lived in tho neighborhood, and being accustomed to the pronun ciation "cubs" for "curse," sang it that way. Homespun people often run counter to some of the common customs, or time-worn piojndices of society, anil are laughed al. Sometimes they are right, and society is wrong. When new and valuable ideas are evolved in the progress of tho world's thought, those who first believe in them are often subjecled to ridicule. But it is those who believe who have occubion to rejoice. Mr. A. Way is u prominent fanner , at Navasino, N. Y., who was pn straU'd with kidnoy (license, and reached u point where "the doctor said be had lone all he could." Feb. 23d, 1S83, he writes, "As a last resort I began the use of Warner's safe cure, and t-day I am h ile, hearty and hnppy." Octo ber 13th, JS87, ho again writes, "If it had not been for your wonderful dis covery of Warner's Mifo cure, I bhould have been in my grave to-day. I am, to all appear.uices as tree from any trouble of the kidneys as any man living. The dooi'T who doctored me and said I must (lit , has since died with Bright's disease I" The honett old farmer was doubth ss derided and laughed at Ly the medical man, and many of his friends, when he announced his determination to try Warner's safe cure, a proprietary medicine; but he is alive and well to day, while tho physician who laughed at him is dead. Tho wise old farmer has the last laugh ! 1 general uoureruueu on Foreign Missions, similar to tho one held at Mildmay Hall. London, in 1878, has been called to meet in London Some thno during 188. A large committee, representing tho chief missionary so cieties of Great Britain, has been chosen to make .preparations for the meeting, and American and continent al societies are asked to co-operate. United Presbyterian. "Drop into school occasionally," Raid one of our teachers to a parent yesterday; "it does us good to see tho parents, and besides you may see things that need correction which wo do not see. Don't wait for special oc casions, but come any time and see how we look when wo are hard at work." Tho suggestion is a good one. The schools would be improved if they were brought nearer tho homes by tho fi'cuuent visits ofitiio wmuiU LATE SHIPWRECKS LOFF CAPE HORN. Extract of letter from David James (l.ito mutter) of the bark Colorado of Glasgow "Haviug lost our ship on Staton island, on the 5th of July laBt, and having saved neither effect a nor provisions, wo were then compelled to travel over the island for ten days, sub sisting on nothing but shellfish and sea weed. On tho 19th of July we came across another shipwrecked party of seventeen, tho surviving part of the crew of the British ship Dunskeig of Glasgow, fourteen having perished through exposure. Now, tho ship was lost on tho 23d of Juno, and a lot of tho cargo, consisting of Kits' Cocoa, was washed ashore out of tho wreck. There was nothing saved except tho eocoa, and we, numbering twenty-five men, wero kept alive on it up to tho aOth of August, when wo wero rescued by tho steamer Mercurio of Buenos Ayres, and landed there on the 13th f September. "Too much praise cannot be given to this cocoa for tho preserved state that it was in, after being in tho bot tom of tho sea, in tho wreck of the Dunskeig, for a fortnight, and then wushed athore, and lying on the beach and rocks of Staten island for about six weeks, subject to tho exposure of tlio severest weather on tho face of tho globe. "The island is situated in a region of perpetual ice, snow and storms, and after all this test it was as fresh and dry aa if in tho works. "As wo had a good stock of it there, wo used it in a liquid state for drink, and also made it in a thick state, like porridge, and wo alto baked it on the lire, which mado splendid bread, and kept us alive and warm on this barren uluud." SEALS AND SEALSKINS. IVhrro the Stoat Viitunlilo Fur.cnW Are, I'ouiid mill llnT They Aro Ciuight. While a great many people nro in terested in seahkins most of them have a rather vague idea as to the ani mal" from which they are stripped. Every spring, when it is announced that the .Ian Mayen hunters have brought 20,000. S0.000, 30,000 or C0.000 to Dundee, or that those who ren dezvous at St. John's, or Harbor Grace have landed 200.000 or more, the prints which especially concern themselves with ladies' dress are tilled with jubila tion over tho approaching cheapness of the fur, to possess which seems to con stitute the acme of female ambition. In reality these captures oft' Newfound land or in the Arctic Sea have no effect whatever on tho fur market. They are "hair" seals, of no value except for their hides, out of which leather is made, or for their blubber. No fur seals, in the seaUkin-jacket sense of the term, are found in the North At lantic. They are almost entirely con lined to the North ami South Pacific. From the South Shetlauds and the Georgian Islands the sals, once so abundant, have almost vanished; and neither St. Paul's, nor the Crozets. nor Marion Isle, the Elephant Isle, and Amsterdam, nor even the Tristan da Cunha yield any thing like the number they once did. The early advent urers who first foil among the "rook eries" in these localities seem to have hail a glorious t'.nie that their less fortunate successors can not help en vying them, even at the distance of a ccntuiy, though sealskins were not so valuable in those far away days. In 1800, when the fur-seal business was at its height at the Georgian Islands, 112,000 seals wero taken, of which .17, 000 were secured by a single ship. Between the years 1820 ami 1821 over 00.000 seals were taken at the South Shetland Islands alone, though, in ad dition to the number of old ones killed for their fur, not fewer than 100,000 newly-born young died in consequence of the destruction of their mothers. So nidi-criminate was the slaughter mat whenever a seal reached tho beach, no matter what its age, it was immediately clubbed. The result of this butchery was soon apparent. IJy 1822 the enormous herds in the South Shetlauds had been exterminated, and in 1 SriO sealing in the South Sea was pronounced a losing business; the old resorts of the animals having been abandoned or "cleared out," so that the hunters had to go further alicid or be content with profits much smaller or much more precarious. At this day fur seals of different species are picked p all through the Antarctic and sub Antarctic regions, as well as along the coast of Japan and Siberia as far as Kanischalka, the Ktirirlcs and Behring Strait. From California northward three species are found. A few are seen on tho shores of California, Oregon, and Washington Territory, and the Indians of Vancouver Island and British Columbia tind a moderate profit in those which they kill. It is, how ever, not until the Prybiloy or Seal Islands, oil' the shores ot Alaska, are reached that the ftir seal attains its maximum. These islets are leased by the United States Go Vermont to a com mercial company, who arc bound by their contract, made in pursuance of nil Act of Congress, not to kill more than 7.r),000 a year on St Paul's Island, or more than 25,000 on St. George's Island; though tho Secretary of the Treasury has power to alter the ratio for each island if he pleases, or to ex tend the period for killing them from Juno to the 15th of August, and then after an interval during September and October. Tho killing of female seals and seals less than one year old, and, among other regulations to the same effect, the uso of firearms or other means tending to drive the seals away from tho islands aro expressly forbidden. No dogs aro permitted on the islands, and no vessels other than those employed by tho company aro permitted to touch there or land 11113 persons or merchandise, eeept in ease I shipwreck or vessels in distress. The method of capture is to drive tho seals into little heads or "pods," where they are leisurely dispatched ty the blows tit a club on tho head. London Slumlord. She Knew Better Than That. "You have been very ill. haven't you. George?" she murmured softly. "I am so glad to see you again." "And I am enraptured at gazing on your face once more," he replied. "I canio very near leaving you for ever. Do you know what was the matter with mo?" "No, George, not exactly. 1 heard it was brain fever, but I didn't believe it." Merchant Traveler. Newport is becoming more and more a place for the very wealthy. People with incomes of twenty thou sand to twenty-live thousand dollars a year can no longer make u show there and participate in fashionable gayety. Au income of fifty thousand dollars even docs not enable 0110 to meet the exacting demands of tho American Vanity Fair. Sir William Grove, whoso writings on tho conservation of energy havo given him so much distinction as a Man of science, has resigned his olllee as one of the judges of the High Court of Justice in England. Mosquitoes in China have a very poisonous sting. In a Tientsin hospital there were at one Mine this summer a man with an abscess in his face and another with blood poisoning from the bite of the insects. A fisherman at Asbury Park, N. J., picked up a sealed bottle on the coast containing a map showing where an alleged treasure is buried at a place near Wilmington, Del. The dis covery has aroused a good del of curi osity then;. Bavaria's late mad King's personal ulfects were sold at Munich recently. A pair of scarlet trousers brought ten pounds; a pair of musical brushes did not sell, because tho "music wouldn't go." The saddest thing in the collec tion was the King's inseparable bed fellow during the last four years a si 11 lied monkey. A little girl while plaviug one day recently on a porch at Wallingford, Conn., was startled by a largo bird tlyini; over her head. The bird flow a short distance, away and returned again and was caught and hold by the child until her parents, who heard the noise, came out and secured it. It proved to be a full grown partridge, apparently Ulllltllt. A colored man of Sinithvillo, (3a., finding that his lady love had been locked in the house by her father, clinibod down the chimney. "Do dobbil is after dem, but the Lawd work wid 11111. L'em go along." Tlio New York World, which is al ways seeking to attract public attention, now comes out as the champion of mothers-in-law and old maids. It trulj'says that there is no basis for one tenth of the cheap wit about' mothers-in-law and old maids that circulates through the papers. Likewise it re marks there are lots of handsome old maids, wherein it is quite right. Bos ton Transcript. In the exhibition at Havre, says Nature, there is an interesting collec tion of specimens of poisonous fishes. Some aro poisonous when eaten, others aro merely venomous. Among the first are many spiuoids, a tetrodon, and many elupea, which are abundant near the Capo of Good Hope. In the Japan Sea is found a very peculiar tetrodon, which in .sometimes used as a means of suicide.
