A farmer of Mecklenburg County,
N. C, owns a tame crow which goes
regularly to the cotton field and picks
as much in a day as any of the human
pickers. With its beak it twists the
cotton out and puts it in a bag. The
owner of this truly rare bird, as well as
the neighbors, declare that the state
ment is true in all respects.

and said he guessed he'd got too much

A FORTUNE LOST AND WON.
The fnct has already been published
in the Virginian that Mr. T. M. Ben
eon, the popular chief clerk of the
Old Dominion Steamship Company at
Newport News, was the fortunate win
ner of one-tenth of the capital prize of
$ir0,000 in the recent grand drawing
of The Louisiana State Lottery. The
press dispatches hud it that W. II.
Landon, of Newport News, had been
the winner, and thereby hangs the
tale of how a very respectable fortune
was lost and won. The particulars are
as follows : A party of five had indi
vidually purchased tenth tickets in the
last grand lottery. Anion" the five
was a youth named W. H. J.-union,
and the tenth of a ticket he purchased
was 74 411. After receiving his ticket
and holding it for some time he
thought there was more money in
belling his ticket than in holding it,
and ho fold it to Mr. T. M. Benson.
Mr. Benson is a repulur subscriber
to the Norfolk Virginian, and always
looks upon it ue a welcome visitor, but
never more so than whpn he read in it
the announcement of the luky num
bers in the hist drawing and saw that
the ticket Jio held, No. 71411 was the
one tint drew the firBt capital prize.
Hb is n married man, with a loving
wife and two beautiful children, and
he took quick steps to his pleasant
home, and read the happy announce
ment contained in tho Virginian to his
dear ones. Mr. Benson is a very prac
tical man. He plced his ticket in
tho charge of tho Homo Savings Bank
uf Norfolk for collection, and quietly
pursues the even tenor of his business.
Ho has boon investing one dollar a
month in The Louisiana State Lottery
for Bomo years, and considers that it
was a profitable investment. Ho lias
