Besides Ihoy would have to assume their portion of the 1'nioii county in dehtedne.,., which would make their taxation enormous. A T. 1 l,K V1 7 0 1 Til J'. I THOuVN. To meet the demands of our eon fitantly Increasing circulation and patronage, and in cnmpli'mcc with our promise to our patrons to greatly improve the ScorT during the present vear, we have ordered from tho east a large c lioder press, with complete outfit of new type and fixtures, ami in the ciitir-e of a few week hope to present to our readers a great deal better paper, both in the matter and general make up. As these improve ments involve a considerable outlay ot monev on our part, we hope it will he met by a corresponding inci "ase ot patronage ami encouragement on the part of the people. Wo desi-e to make the Scot -r a true, reliable and creditable index of I'liion futility ami to full) accomplish that end we need the assistance of all our citizens. The outside world invariably judges of the prosperity of any town or coun ty, its future prospects, anil desira bllllv a a place of residence, its social conditions, tlio reltamttty ami shunt ing of i.ts business men, by the local paper published there. It is a sure index, and it is hard to eradicate from the public mind the impressions (hits obtained, no matter how erroneous they may bo. Xinety-nino times out of a hundred, however, the verdict arrived at in this respect by the public, is correct. It remains with tho citizens, and business men partic ularly, of a Iowm to cieate any impression they choose on the inhabi tants of the surroundiugcouutry . and tho principal wo might say the only medium for lining this is the news paper. If the residents ot a town aro wide-awake, advertise their business extensively, offer inducements, and let the people know that they have inducements' to offer, they will tin douhtedlv reap their reward in the increased! activity of business, value of properly, and in consequent pros perity secure content ment . which is Letter than all. On the other hand, if thev aro governed by soltlsh and sordid motiveseveryone for himself afraid to advertise and let tl o world know what they are doing lest some rival may take advantage of the in formation thus obtained and circum vent them in some wa , or if they think it Is (he coriect thing to rctiain from patroui.ing the printer for fear that he iniuht get loo much to eal it thoy did, they will certainly tied out their mistake and injure no one but themselves. We could till the ad vertising columns of the Schit, to morrow, with tolerably fair paying advertisements by men doing business , lit nil the large trade centers of the United Mates. In view of these hots how narrow minded It appears to a I newspaper man to hear a local iner- chant ki "Oh! It don't pay to ad- j vertise," when successful and pros- i perous men doing business in the : name line on the other side ot the con tinent, are advertising In his paper. ' As we bald before ii town is judged by its local paper. We are led to this reflection bv he peiiistil of our ex changes, oi which we have fitly or 1 sixty coming from the varhuis sections ( of the state. Wo have scanned the advertising columns of these papurs ' and have forincil.iui idea ot the owns in which thev tiro published. We venture the insertion that wo have i them kl,ttd up light. Wo notice by i theho pHpori. that In nearly every town there Miu one or two leading hiitiuuiu i nKrwMiwirr imwiiii wwirwiniiriiWi''iWiiiTFi'Tijrw' because thu-tr udvurti, scineutk. denote the- f.arU Wb.tt woukl, consider a man of auv promliAWiio thtU does nU ud vurtU'i Hi wt doltV'pf U an ae knowiediicinoui, of his lnfei ijoii.ty , i.n a business soue, U'O vuin who docsi ThoHMVven bring, ttwuisclves i nnd their btisitti's nromliiw.ilv before f tho people, and aro regarded by the I peopU as prominent factors In l ho I development und progress of the country, and aro irvi-led and patron ized accordingly. Many of thetw have the advertising business reducwl al mot to a pciouc.0 mid aro coiiRlHUtly introdneing new fe-aturos to catch the eyes of the public. The best method, and the one now umhI by the most of them, is to publish, a li-t of goods they carry and the prices of tho sauie. Karmers 'mid peoplo living at a dis tance may then know: what to expect and act accordingly. .Merchants who adverliso in this manner will he con sidered the cheapest because they uinke public their prices, and invito compe tition and comparison. This will not be denied, and in this counecllou wo will impart, a little hit of information which is prohablv not known tn the merchants of Union, and certainly not to the people of tho surrounding country, for no one has ever tuhl them of it, but goods of every descrp tioii are being sold cheaper in Union than anv other town in Ktttlcru Ore gon, 'fills is a tact, and the iiilornt i tiou Is given gratis. Whosoever desires to may proilt thereoy. If anyone doubts Mie truth of tho state ment, they aro invited to come into our sancttim ami compare Ihu price lists or tho leading merchants of the various towns willi the Union prices and judge for themselves. It will be the endeavor of the Scorr in the future, as in the past, to up hold the best interests of the town and county in which it Is published, and in tlils wo hope to have, in a greater degree than in the past, the assistance and encourageineiil of our business men. The patronage of the people, in the way of subscriptions, throughout the entire country has ahoailv been given us beyond our expectations at first, for which wo are pleased and thankful. The Scout is now more widely circulated and gen eially read than any paper ever pub lished in Union county, and we trust that our labor to make it better ami better each succeeding yer, will con tinue to bo appreciated. iMMrnwranisnnuc'itcMajtwKiawBixr' NOTICH KOK i'UHUt'ATION.
