    BRAINS VS. BOOBIES.
In ovcry garden tho sweetest trees
nro the most frequented by voracious
birds, the sweetest apples are invariably
most pecked at. In society, too, there
are always on hand a number of not
only voracious, but very malicious
harpies. These not only find it a
pleasure, but believe it a duty to be
ever pecking at their more talented
neighbors. Lying and fault-finding
seem to bo tho chief provinco of these
persons.
This granted, it may bo asked if it
be a good tiling to be gifted in any one
direction. One would think not, judg
ing from the manner in which many
talented persons are dealt with. In
point of fact, the uage to which these
are sometimes subjected is of such a
character that they may readily bo ex
cused if they occasionally desire to bo
thought stupid.
Their less brilliant neighbors are con
tinually trying to pick holes in their
coats, with the view of showing the
world that 1 1 1 03 are not deserving of
such praise as the world seems dispos
ed to award them.
Critics who will graciously permit
persons of a commonplace character
to escape the lash of censure, pounce
upon a man who is popularly supposed
to be above the average iii point of in
tellectual attainments, and llagellato
him to the extent of their power. At
one time they endeavor to prove that
he is a rank impostor; at another time
tho3 hint that lie is a dangerous char
acter who is doing more harm than
good in tho world, and, in exceptional
eases, whenever he outrages their sel
lisli prejudices, they go so far as to cast
a doubt upon his sanity.
The individual who has made a for
tune by grinding tho life out of his em
ployes and getting the bettor of those
who have had business transactions
witii him, w 11 inform you, with unctuous
self-satisfaction, that certain people are
lacking in that most important of all
things namely, common sense.
Tho person who never reads anything
but tho most unwholesome columns in
tho daily newspapers will sneer at tho
productions of tho master-minds, and
declare that tiic same are but the merest
rubbish. Unless a man have the talent
of amassing mono)- even though ho
possess ten other talents which are of
a higher and purer character even
though ho have painted pictures, writ
ton books, made seionlilie investiga
tions, and formulated systems of phil
osophy, which represents more actual
braimvork and integrity of purpose
than a hundred fortunes, society dooms
itself at liberty to make light of him,
and to sneer at him if it fuel disposed
to do so. When it does condescend to
recognize his claim, it often does so in
a manner which may well inspire him
with the most profound disgust. In
nine cases out of ten people exalt him
when they do so because they wisli
to be exalted themselves. They would
like to bo understood that they are on
terms of intimacy with this man of
genius, or that they have been gracious
ly pleased to patronize that woman of
talent.
Xo doubt there arc some enterprising
beings who would keep a recognized
man of talent about their promises,
just as they keep prize cattle, if the ex
penditure of mono would onabio them
to do so.
At the same time, nine-tenths of
tlioe who sound t ho praises of their
intellectual friends or, rather, those
whom they aro pleased to .-ay are their
friends are very careful to point out
that tho said friends aro peculiar and
eccentric, and soon, as if ''those creat
ures" could do the work which they aro
doing if they were continually pausing
in their labors to see that they were not
outraging any of tho laws 6f conven
tionality. Hut when a man of ability conies to
grief! why, what a shaking of heads
and a time for rojoic'ng! Stup d peo
ple gloat over tho fact that lie lias not
been able to take care of himself bet
ter than they have boon able to look
after themselves. Tho chances are
that they begin to think themselves
quite shrewd on tho score of his soli
tar' failure in a matter which is, in
their eyes, of paramount importance,
but to which ho lias devoted little at
tention. Cultivated people, in addition
to being, as a class, disliked, aro gen
erally feared. Tho ordiuary person is
not at eas j when talking to them, and
considers that tho less intercourse ho
has with them the bo.t -r for his consti
tution anil peaeo of mind. Often ho
fancies that tho stupendous beings can
not take an interest in matters which
most delight ordinary natures. In nil
this tho booby is very foolish. A woak
mind is always benefited when brought
in contact with a strong one, and it
will bo found, in many cases, that those
who possess tho most powerful intel
lects havo tho gentleness and, in many
respects, the slnipl. city of children.
Of course, there aro so-called talent
ed people who will not condescend to
consort with those who aro assumed to
bo unibler mentally than themselves,
and make a po nt of snubbing those
who will submit to snubbing from
them. These are but liauty tyrants,
who in the court of genius crown them
selves and userp the chair intended for
their bottors.
It will bo well for thoso who aro now
cm-died by tho assumption and reputed
knowledge of those literary, scientific,
and other bullies if they will tnko heart
in believing that tho day is coming
when only true merit can expect re
ward. Yet tho spirit that led to the persecu
tion of Galileo and impeded the work
of Georgo Stophonon is as active to
da. as over, in spito of tho fact that
experience tolls us tho lnttud theory of
the hour becomes tho goldou rule of
to-morrow.
Thus it happens that Brains frequent
ly fail to roup tho reward of thoir
labors, unless they can be said to hu re
warded when, after thoir bodies havo
crumbled into dust, statuos are erected
to th-'ir memories, and other honors
paid thoui. Jim Katharine Clapp,in the

A CENT MADE HIM.
Ilio storyomrrnmii's Ittse to Alllu-
ciicc.
Into a small crack of the ledge of tho
toll-window at the South-side end of
tho Smitlilield street bridge are firmly
driven two copper cents. They are tar-
nisnctl anu dull, and nrobaulv never
are noticed by tho hundreds who daily
pass their pennies over them.
let these two cents have a very ro
mantic history, which was rehearsed to
a reporter by "Dick" Porter, tho genial
night collector. "Tit's one," ho sa'd,
pointing to one whose edgo was just
visible, "was owed to me for thirteen
years. In the spring of 1S72 a man
named Charles Henderson came to me
about 10 o'clock at nijrht. and said ho
wanted to cross the bridge, but was
'busted.' He declared upon his honor
that ho would pay me back the cent.
That's an old r:tuu and if I've heard
that promise once I've heard it a thous
and tunes.
"1 never expected to get the cent,
and I told him ho could go over. Ho
asked me for a piece of paper, and tak
ing out his pencil wrote his name at the
end of a note drawn in my favor for
0110 cent, payable at sight. The idea
of giving a note for one cent struck 1110
as rather amusing, and instead of
throwing it down 1 put it carefully
away and thou forgot all about it.
"One night, about a year ago, a well
drcssed gentleman caino over tho
bridge and stopped at my window.
" 'Is there a gentleman here named
Richard Hrokaw?" ho inquired. 1 told
him that was may name.
" 'Well, I've como to pay a note I
owe you,' he said. 1 thought the man
must no crazv. 1 eouhlit t oven re-
menilvr ever seeing him, much less
lending him any money. Observing
my puzzled looks ho sa d:
"I)o you remember 0110 night thir
teen years ago a jnvor man came to
you and asked you to pass him over the
bridge because he had no money; then
he gave you a note for 1 cent, signed
Charles llenderaon? Well, I'm Charl-s
Henderson. I want to pa' you that
cent with interest. At the regular rate
of interest for that lima tho interest
would almost equal the princ'pal, so
I'll just give you Scents.
" 'After I left you I beat mv way 011
freight trains to 1 10 west, where 1
wont to work as a lominon laborer on
the Atchison, Topck 1 and Santa Fe
railroad. I was soon made section boss.
and was gradually promoted until now
1 hold one ol its best olliees. it ou
had not lent 1110 that cent I could not
have gone to Pittsburgh, nor worked
the freight-car.?, nor gone to work on
tho railroad, nor been what I am now.
That cent made me.
"He then gave me a long history of
his life, and. after leaving his address
and teling 1110 to write to him if 1 over
needed a friend, lie left me. Ho
wanted to give me a nice sum of money,
but I wouldn't take it. 1 never have
heard from him since, except 0110 day 1
got a paper which stated that ho had
been elected mayor of one of the most
thriving Cities of the west. I'll not
part wiih thoso two cents for any mon
ey, but they'll stay in that window sill
as long as L stay here. Hero's your
change; good night." Viltsbunjh Ga
zelle. Women and tho Newspapers.
An eastern ladv visiting tho olejrant
homo of the proprietor of an inlluential
newspaper says to her husband:
"Why don't you own a newspaper,
dear? Just fancy! To havo a news
paper to 'go' for people in and a home
liko this!" After a pause "And 1
think I'd rather havo the newspaper
than the home."
That seems to bo all women think a
newspaper is for anyway, to pitch into
people and print fashion anil social
hews. I wonder how many of them
ever road the telegraphic news or tho
local news, sometimes, when it is a
big murder or a big scandal, they de
vour it greedily, but if women were t ho
arbiters it would bo a very extraordin
ary paper they would demand. I havo
known women who road editorials
sometimes, but they were generally
cranks in some direction. I think
thore aro exceptional cases who read
the police reports; but it is astonishing
how long a woman can loolc at a news
paper and not know anything that is in
it after slio gets through. A thing has
to havo a connected story in it before
slio can grasp it. A baro fact slips lior,
an incident may catch her, but a good
strong story in a kind of complete torm
she remembers every detail of, and
when she is told how tho woman is
dressed tho wholo thing lives before
her, and slio novel forgets it. San
Francisco Chronicle.
Heredity of Disease.
It is a gonoral beliof if either a inalo
or female animal lias met with an in
jury on any part of its body or limb.?
during the pregnancy of the female,
this injury will never bo shown by tho
offspring. But wo havo lately hoard of
several instances to tho contrary, of in
juries being fully transmitted, moro
particularly, however, from the female;
so that they ought to bo guarded
against in breeding, as well as against
disease in tho parents. Tho latter is so
generally certain to be developed in tho
oll'spring, all sensible por.-ons agreo
that neither male nor female should
ever be pormlttod to breed when di.i
oaspd in tho slightest degree. Thoro
aro immense losses annually HiiH'erod
in roaring voting animals born of such
imronts. Heaves, curb, spavin, sido
1)0110, and ring-bone, aro tho most or
dinary ailments that aro shown in
hort.es, while scrofula develops most
surely and disastrously in cuttle. P.r
ent animals of every kind should bo in
perfect health and condition atthoiimo
of breeding, and the young should bo
jud.ciously fed and attended to until
full-grown, and thou they will Lm lit for
tho beat of servico through an extra
length of lif. Our farnlors would add
millions of dollars annually to thoir in
comes, if they would persistently adopt
the above suggestion in breeding and
roaring thoir domontic animals. A. JJ.

"No! Washington city will continue to be
the capital of the United" Slates as long as the

Mr. Conkling and the Artist.
During the time of tha electoral commission,
early in 1S77, when Conkliug was iu tho senate
and was its mo3t pioinlnout republican tfguro
an artist ot The Lutulon Xewt was sent here
to make sketches of the great event fur his pa,
per, and he wished to make Senator Conkliug
a part of these pictures, llo called upon
Conkliug nt his ri.slileui'0, and found him en
gaged In writing, lie was received lu a digni
fied way, and told Senator Conkliug that ha
would like to have a photograph of him to send
to l.onuou, and tlial 11 lie liad no photographs
he would make arrangements for him to sit at
any time with any Washington photographer
Conkliug should select, and that The Lyndon
Aevs would pay the bill.
"That is out of tho quostlon," replied Conk
ling, "I have something else to do than to
sit for photographs. I am sorry I can't oblige
you."
At this the artist turned to go, whereupon
Senator Conkllng said: ''I suposc, sir, you
sketch, aud if you really want my picture,
though I can't give rou a photograph, I don't
see how I cau prevent you from taking a
sketch of me."
More thgn this, he was perfectly willing that
the artist should take the sketch then and
there, and while lie was writing away the art
ist sat down aud rapidly moved his pencil over
tho paper. In the course of ten minutes he
ot np and bade Conkliug dood day, when
enator Conkliug asked to sco the sketch. It
was handed to him, and ho was so much
pleased with it that he told the artist that lie
would like to keep It, and If lie would allow
him to do so he would pose for lilm.
The artist wanted nothing better than this,
and he irot Senator Conkllng to assume a posi
tion ho had taken In one of Ids noted speeches
delivered a dav or two before. Ho kept him
standing until he bad mado an excellent
