o i J J Always Placid. Frotrf Ihc Detroit Free I'rcs3. TIjc receiving clerks behind the desks at the telogrnph oflicesnrecool, placid fellows. They take your mcssnRO of life or death with perfect indifference, mechanically count the words, and look u bit bored as they reply: "It will bo sixty-fivo cents, please." I had my eye on n certain chap for several weeks before I humbled his pride. Ho insulted me. lie insulted me by softly whispering to himself, as be counted tbo words in tho following message: "Grandmother died last night very suddenly. How many of you can at tend funeral?" When I handed him the message I ex pected him to exhibitalittiemore emo tion. Wliilo he could not have been personally acquainted with mygrand niother, ho must have suspected that eho was n nice old lady, and that her sudden death had greatly overcome me. Why didn't ho look up with a bit of sympathy in his eye ana say: "Too bad!" I know just how you feel, and I'm sorry for you." But, no. lie whistled and counted, made a scratch or two with his pen, and remarked: "Three words over seventy cents." And as ho made change ho told one of tho boys behind tho counter that he'd bo if he wasn't going to tho dog fight that night. Then he picked up ray dead grandmother dispatch and banged it on a hook, shoved mo over some change, and turned away to resume the perusal of a sporting paper. Tho next week I went in with a dis patch announcing that my grandfa ther's will hadbeenopencd and that I came in for $25,000. That man must have seen by my face that I was high ly elated. Hang him, he never had the fifth of that sum, and his salory had just beencutdown$lOpermonth, but when ho had read the despatch he calmly announced: "Forty cents, and you forgot to dato it." And then ho began talking to one of his fellow clerks about a slugging match, and how ho won $3 by betting on the right man. I don't say he ought to have swung his hat and cheered over my good fortune, but why couldn't ho havo extended his hand and said: "Eh, old boy? In luck ain't you? Well, I'm glad on it. Send around tho cigars and we'll smoke to your good health." I mado up my mind when I went out that I would upset that man's equanimity or lose a kg. I'd tumblo him off that pedestal of placidity if it cost a thousand dollars. I'd upset, imbalance, and unhinge him or die trying. I gave him two weeks to re pent. Itisn'tright to rush a telegraph man out ot the world on a day's no tice. I went back ono evening, and I felt a bit sorry for him as he glanced up and then let his eyes return to tho 'Police Razette. I knew that his wife and child were m Ohio on a visit, and I stepped to tho desk and wrote: Dctkoit, Juno 0, 1SS5. J. II. Smith, Columbus, O: Please telegraph us full par ticulars of tho accident by u-liirh Mra. Georgo Taylor anil tlimsliter of this city wcie instantly killed this afternoon. S. 1 I felt a bit sorry as I handed it in, not knowing but the man mii;ht faint dead away asheread tho terrible news. Still, I had vowed revenge.and I would not forgo it. He received the dispatch, whistling softly as was his wont, clat tered tho point of his pen along tho words a he counted, and then ho drawled out: "A dollar and twenty cents, and where shall I send tho answer?" "Did you read that dispatch?" I asked, after looking.at him for half a minute. "Yes." "Do you know the parties?" "Yes, sir." "Isn't vour name George Taylor?" "Yes, s'ir." "Aren't tho parties your wifo and daughter?" "No, sir. They returned homo this morning. Hero's your change." Breath Catching Fire. Doctor Dcatson in Uritieh Medical Jour nal. I have thought it right to put on record the following case, as it seemed to me to bo ono of some rarity and to havo some importance from a medico legal point of view. I cannot do bet ter than givo the facts in tho words of the nationt himself, who communicat ed them to mo by letter. Ho writes as follows: "A rather strango thing happened to myself about a week ago. For a month or so I was troubled very much with foul eructations. I had no pain, but tho smell of the gas which came from my stomach was disagreeable to myself and to all who happened to be In tho room. About a week ago as I said, I got up in tho morning and light ed a match to see tho time, and when I put tho match near my mouth to blow it out my breath caught fire and gave a loud crack like the report of a pistol. I burned my lips and they are still sore. I got a terrible surprise and so did my wife, for tho report awakened her." From tho above occurrence it would appear that the conditions known as "halitosis," or diseased breath, is not only a source of misery to the suilerer and those compelled to associato with him, but may, under certain circum stances, become a condition of dan ger to the unfortunate possessor of it. In tho present instance the gaseous re sults of the imperfectly digested food had their atoms of carbon and hydro u gen so arranged as to givo rise to tho presence of carbureted hydrogen, tho inflammable and explosive qualities of which came into play when mixed with a due proportion of atmospheric air in presence of tho unguarded light of tho burning match. I may aud that tho patient to whom tho accident happened is a most intelligent and ob servant man, and that the diet I pre scribed for tho indigestion from which he suffers from timo to time has alco hol excluded from it, and I know that my instructions in that respect are acted noon. Marrying All Day Long. "I never saw so much fun in the wed ding business as I saw down in Bur lington, X. J., tho other day," said n Scranton man who had just returned from that town. "The young people of Eastern Pennsylvania dislike tho new marriage law very much, and they havo mado Burlington a veritable Gretna Green. Tho average number of marriages of Pennsylvania couples has been cloven a day for some tunc past, and the epidimic appears to be on the increase. One Sunday not long ueo thirty couples went there to be, married. I called at tho house of the parson who is an old acquaintance of mine, and ho was so overrun with work that he asked mo to stay and see him tio tho young lovers who had come there across tho river from the Keystone State. The hall was filled with waiting couples, and tho minis ters.'s study and parlor had all they could hold comfortably. Tiio green country chops and fellows from tho villages enjoyed the jam over so much, and the girls giggled and accepted tho situation gocd-naturedly. As fast as one couple were pronounced husband and wile all the others offered their congratulations, although in nearly every case tho parties had never seen one another before. "Ono burly young farmer with a buxom maiden at his Mile blushed when ho walked through tho crowd to havo the knot tied. He was told to brace up and not get excited by the jolly would-be husbands, and one told him to keep a stiff upper lip, as the agony would not last long. When he march ed out into the hall ho was greeted by such exclamations as 'Pshaw! it didn't hurt you half as much as you thought it would,' and '0, you're all right, if you did look scared!' Tho much frightened groom got out oi tho house as quickly as he could, put his bride in an open carriage, and started for Pennsylvania. "As a general Wig tho girls went through the trying ordeal much moro gracefully than tho boys. 'It's our turn next, Mum, an'don'tyefurgit it,' a hard-handed chap was heard to whisper to hisgirl.whena couplestood up before the minister, and when that couple had been disposed of and a certificate mado out the hard-fisted fellow took a somewhat slender miss by tho right hand and led her beiorc tho preacher. 'Git around on t'other side, Joshua; that ain't the side to stand on,' said a voice in the audi ence, and Joshua had to change his position, which ho did in a very awk ward way, grinning and coloring up as he did so. When tho last couple had been disposed of my ministerial friend drew a sigh of relief and looked tired. Ho said he hoped no more Pennsyl vania ns would bother him in a month. HoTlad taken in 60 in fees that day. A Strange Case. Washington Correspondence Now York Herald. Dr. Alexander Y. P. Garnctt, who, by tho way, was Surgeon General in tho Confederate service, had one of the strangest cases brought to his atten tion that has ever fallen to the lot of a practising physician in tho capital. A senator of the United States actual ly called to bo treated for the swell head. This is not a mere bit of fun. The Senator is in a condition corder ing on rage because of the character of tho practical joko perpetrated upon him. As it is, it would oe dangerous. What appears to distress him most is that the trick is "a chestnut," and ho resents tho lack of invention on tho part of his tormentors. The Senators generally hang their hats in tho cloak rooms, but one member of the cham ber has lately been in the habit of placing his tall head-covering on a sofa or one of the mantels. Ho has not been in office a great while, and several of tho older senators havo resented the freedom with which ho has deported him self. Two of them folded up some paper and placed it under ono side of his hatband. It was not detected. Again finding the obnoxious tile in the same place, they added another roll of newspaper, rendering tho band much smaller. Then half a dozen Southern Sanators, who relish a good thing, were let into the secret. They stopped tho Senator who was under tho ban and asked after his health. Ono conspirator remarked that ho looked very ill. Another inquired significant ly if ho had any predisposition to ap oplexy. Ho grew greatly distressed, and, at tho advice of ono of the wicked jokers, came down from Capitol Hill and consulted Dr. Garnctt. After a careful examination tho physician asked tho would-bo patient where ho felt badly, and ho declared that his head certainly must havo swelled. Then tho doctor, recalling tho namo of tho person who had sent tho new fmticnt, made an examinotion of the iat. That cleared up thij mystery. But the Senator is a very wicked man, for all that. An Kleplinnt Kills a Man. From tho Pall Mull Gazette. A man named David Watkins has been killed by an elephant at Abor daro. For the past two days Bostock and Wombwell's menagerie has ex hibited in this town. April 0, the ele phant Madame Jumbo, only four inch es less than the renowned Jumbo him self, was stabled in an enclosure at tho back of the White Lion Inn. Some boys managed to get into this place, and proceeded to feed tho ele phant wjth biscuits. Others, moro mischievous, cavotliB animal a supply of stones. This so angered it that it attempted to wreck its vengeance on its tormentors. Tho hoys, however, managed to escapo over a wall. The elephant then turned upon Watkins, an old man of sixty-five, who hnd been an amused spectotor of tho proceedings. He, unfortunately, was unable to make his escape, and tho elephant seized him with its trunk, dashed him violently to tho ground, and then pummelled him severely. The cries of the old man brought tho keeper to the spot, but ho was in turn compelled to seek safety in flight and obtain assistance. Watkins was eventually rescued, but ho waB found to hft tfirriblviuinnul nnt died. Tlicnlrlcnl In Team. Some Austin utnnteiir gave a perform ance of "Hamlet" one day l.ftt week. Gus Do Smith was lliunlct. Tho day after tho performance Kosciusko Murpiy met Gun and asked: '"How did the performance come off last night?"' "Everything did well except old Judgo Ponnybunker. I'll Ihj dog-goned if he goes on tho stage with me any more. I'll take him aud tie him on the railroad track and let the cars run over him before he shall piny Ghost to my ltamlut uny more." "Was he the Ghost ?" "Yes, and the blooming old idiot stalked across thoslagewith his spectacle on. You bet he made a circus of tho whole show. If ever there was a melancholy Dano 1 was one. 1 havn't got over it. And the old graven image says he put on his specs to add to thcsoleinuity of tho scene." Toxtia Sittings. Not iy victor Hug". He sat in the parlor. She was similarly indulging. They had been doing this similarly fot four mortal hours. It was 1 1:110 p. m. He was happy. She was tired. He asked it ho might sing. She said that tho patrol wagon didn't come out after 11 o'clock. Then ho turned up his voice and started. "Ever of thee, I'm fondly dreaming," ho warbled. "Why don't you wake up and go home?'' she queried querulously. He waked up. Ho went home. Ho never came back. Dut another young man took his plnco. They burn the paternal coal and guB seven nights per week. Possibly It is better thus. Who knows? Merchant Traveller. A leading citizen of llagerstown, Mil., Mr. George W. Harris, had suffered for some time with facial neuralgia aud tooth ache, when he tried St. Jacobs Oil. Ho hays: "It gavouieiiistautnneousreliof, and I consider it a wonderful remedy." HIfii'm Coro'H. Men do wear corsets. Tho reasons for their doing bo are, however, various. Some havo had spinal troubles in their earlier years, have worn somesortof an appliance for the support of tho back, and on grow ing up reqi.iro a canvas and whalebone corset in place of tho brace. Again, corsets are worn by men to hide some physical defect. They are used also to advantage by men a'llieteil with obesity. IVrsoas fol lowing oul-of-door occupations wear them ns a protector against sudden changes of weather. Corsets, of this class, however, are made of sheepskin. To behove that the article is ever worn by inuiUiiid as u means of perfecting their forms, is a mis take. The contour of a man's physique can not be beautilied by lacing. Besides this, the discomfort of breathing to a man who wears a corset for such a purpose would be such that he would gladly sacri fice his personal appearance toease. Now York Express. Prof. Chan. P. Eight years ago a very well known gentle man was about to enter upon largo com mercial transactions. His medical adviser quietly dropped into his olllce ono day and told his in llil fii t in t clerk that ho would be dead in three mouths, and that ho otulit, to settle up his business affairs at once! That man is alive and well to-day, yet ho was given up ns incurable with the same disease that is killing General Arthur! Our reporter met this gent'einan yester tlay and in coin ersiilion about tho Gen eral's case, he said : "I will give .",000 to any charitable In stitution in the state ot New York, to be "designated by the editor ot the New York "Woild, the editorof the lluffalo News, and "W. Mr. Warner is interested in General Ar- I thur's case because ho is personally no- pmiuted with linn and he says that it is a shaiiio that any man should beallowod to die under the operation of old-fashioned powerful cathartics, which ha vo no curative effects, rather than that a modern, con ceded specillc for kidney disease whose worth is acknowledged world-wido, should wivu him. 'Ilf you doubt tho ellleacy of Warner's safe cure," sny the proprietors, "ask your friends aud neighbors about it. This is a.king but little. They can tell you all you wihI to know."
