Tho Ff-fcsidant is now giving his at tention to the selection of Interstate Commerce .-Commissioners from among the hundreds of names that have been recom incited to him. Much of the de" lay. in announcing the appointments ii due to his desire to select the best possible men for the positions, and in this he has been considerably restricted by not being able to get the best qual - ified men to serve at the moderate sal aries fixed by the law. The law provides that it shall go in to effect sixty days after its passage. Nothing has been made known at tuo White House as to who win constitute the Jomm:ssion. but it is tho belief that Col. Morrison, of 111. Judge Cuoley, of Michigan, and Col. Bragg, of Albany, will be three of the men selected. Some of the most energetic and public spirited citizens of Washington arc discussing tho feasibility of holding a carnival hero at the conclusion of thu( National Drill in May, such asi nnttiin.llv t;ilc rl:irft nn Afarr!" Clms in New Orleans, Advocates ef the scheme urge that unless the carnival be pushed through now it will bo im possible to hold $no for four years. The presidential campaign and tho in auguration ceremonies will furnish displays and draw upon private purse strings sufficiently for the next two year-, and the third year will witness the gmnl Knights Templar conclave. It is estimated that any creditable . carnival will necessitate an outlay of 25,000, and in order to save expenses it is-proposed to buy or hire tho cos tume and cars of the New Orleans Knights of Momus and Proteus. Capt. Eads, who was one of the best known men in America, has been especially well known in Washington for some years past the Eads "Jetty system" which figured before Congress for so many years, attracted more at tention than any other private or cor porate business before that body in thvj last decade and a half. It is said at tho Mexican Legation here that tho death of Capt. Eads will not iiiteifere with the status of the concession made to him by the Mexican Government fur a ship rail way aciossthc Peninsula-of Tehuanto pec. The concession included both Capt. E ids and his nssociates in the enterprise, and remains in force for a period of ninety -nine year?. Of course his death causes some speculation a3 to the probable fato of tho scheme, as it may ba very difficult to find some one e liiallv well qualified to carry out the project. Mr. Cannery, who La3 just been ap pointed to the Mexican mission, has not declined tho honor, as was reported, but has accepted that position. The rumor about h"i3 refusal originated in ilrt dissatisfaction of his friends, who are averse to his coiner there on what they consider such inadequate com pensation. He, himself, insists that American Diplomatists ehcu'd be bet ter paid. Said he, "tho pay of these positions Is just about enough to pro : vide decent hous2 rent. 1 expect to be baukmpttid before I return. "But' continued he (laughing) "money is not every tiling in this wtrll, you know." Oon. Joseph E. Johnson has been jiiite ill i. St. Louis, lie is now seventy-nine years of age, and, pays the Republican, has lost all his old tiina physical vigor, though his temper is as cheerful and his manner as cour teous as of old. He gives an enema of carbonic acid sulphuretted hydrogen gases, the latter gas carrying the former into every part of the throat and lungs. This treatment, too, i3 directed at effects the cause remains undisturbed. What this caus eis has been stated by perhaps the highest pulmonary authority m the worlJ, t. e., the Brompton Hos pital for Consumptives, in London, Eng. This malady every year carries off from one-seventh to one-fifth of the entire population of England ! Dr. Payne, M.D., M.R.C.P., London, is authority for this statement. The same or a greater proportion of deaths obtains in America. Dr. Payne also says that one-half the total number of deaths from all other causes have Beeds of this disease in the 3ystera which only require some irritant to develop ! Dr. Hermann Brehmer, an eminent German authority, savs that consump tion is caused by deficient nutrition of the lungs, by poor blood. These authorities cannot be disputed The medical world recognizes them. The uric acid is the irritant in the blood that causes the development of the seeds which Dr. Brehmer eays lie dormant in the blood Every particle of blood which passes through the lungs and heart, also goes through the kidneys, and if they are in the least deraneed thev cannot rid the blood ot its killing poison. The thousand little hair-like sewer tubes of the kidneys very easily get Diocuea up ana diseased : and when they do, they corrupt instead of purifying the blood. Kidney disease may exist, and yet no pain occur in that organ, because it is deficient in nerves of sensation. Uip your finger in acid every day and it soon festers and is destroyed. The Brompton Hospital investigation showed that 52 per cent, of the victims of consumption were afflicted with de ranged kidneys, which permitted the. uric acidpoinon to remain in the blood and irritate the lungs, lhis uric acid is al ways fighting every vital organ, and if there be any inherent weakness in the lungs it inevitably causes pneumonia, cough and consumption. , The real cause of pulmonary troubles being so authoritatively shown to be faulty even though unsuspectelaction of the kidneys, explains why, in rder to matter the dreaded consumption, one must rid the blood of tho uric acid irri tant which inflames and burns up the lung substance. We have no doubt that if the kidneys are kept in natural action, consumption and a great many other diseases, caused by uric acid, will not only be cured but will be pre vented. When the kidney is healthy, no albu men appears in the water, but albumen is found in the water of more than half of those who die of consumption! This, then, is the condition of things that always precedes consumption: 1'iret, weakened kidneys; second, re tained uric acid, poisoning the blood; third, the development of disease in the lungs by the irritant acids passing throngh them. Then there is a little cough in the morning ; soon thick, yellow matter is spit up, followed by loss of flesh and strength, with dreadful night sweats ; and when the patient goes to his echool physician for help, he is put on cod-liver oil which his stomach, weak ened also by uric acid in the blood, can not digest. Because there is no pain present in the kidneys, the patient does not think they are affected, but the kid ney acid is doing its work every minute, every hour, day and night, and by-and-by tho disease of the lungs ha3 advanced until pus is developed, then come hemor rhages, and at last the glassy stare which denotes that the end is near ! A post-mortem examination of such cases shows that the terrible uric acid has completely destroyed the substance of the lung.
