The fH,t to day CLOSE Of THE ELEVEXTH 1 EAR. With this issue this paper closes its eleventh year of publication, ami to the extent that the prosperity and suc cess of a county paper is a matter of general interest to its readers and the community in which it is published do we take pleasure in stating the gener al outlines of the policies upheld by Tiik Review, ami a brief i crams of its aims, purpose 3 and achievements. The present management assumed control of the paper something over two years since. A course was then mapped out for Tiik Review, which it was be lieved would make it, in every feature the best newspaper ever published in Douglas county. By patient labor the addition of a large quantity of printers' material at considerable ex pen.se, the change from a patent out side to a home print, a determination to give the entire local news of Doug las county, and a free, fair and impar- ,tialjdistussipn of the leading issues of the da, The Review has attained Its goal and as a successful business enter prise and advocate of the interests o Douglas county, it is pre-eminently ahead of any newspaper enterprise over undertaken in the county. The advertising patronage has increases with great rapidity to keep apace with the subscription list liic average circulation during the year past was 1328 copies per issue, and a steady growth has been maintained notwith standing a period of general business depression. Two large annual holiday editions embracing a general descrip tion of the county have been published and circulated and have attracted much attention in the "old west" and east to our favored county. They alone have done much good in building up our county. While The Review has treated all subjects of national importance with impartiality and without fear or favor, and has allowed its columns to corres pondents of all shades of opinion?, it has ever been true to those great fun damental principles of our government as enunciated by Thomas Jefferson and upheld and defended by the de mocracy. It is proud of the thorough ly patriotic and incorruptibly honest administration of our national govern ment by President Cleveland ami of our state government Gov. Pennoyer. It believes that the perpetuity of our free institutions and the advancement of our country can best be maintained by tlio retention iu power of that party . as time honored as the government - itself Thus with a slight review of the past and a determination for greater success iu the future, The Review re dodges itself to be the foremost champion o the people's interest and the leading advocate of the claims and merits of Douglas county. I haven't time to cpaote more but please read all ot the second chapter of liabakuk and weep. It's doubtful if a person was ever saved from death by whiskey but what something else would have had the same effect and not taken chances on a remedy that Its history is written in hum in blood. It looks to melikoit's given to men to satisfy their depravei appetite in place of curing them. The time will como when the doctor wil see that it is his mission to prevent disease. You say I call the whiskey of Regents of Corvallis college is that traffic criminal. What is a ciimcl thi board was not only wrong in their 1 1 would think it would be a crime to action, but the act itself was dishon- j orable. If there were technical errors, they ware their own, and they took ad vantage of them, which in law is high ly dishonorable, llev. Moses a gradu ate hailing from Ilandolph Macon, stated publicly in the board, "that there was not a newspaper in Oregon but what would sneer at Christianity and morality." Of course he meant the secular papers. I le saitl other hard things about newspapers, none of which were true, and exhibits that men that run on such narrow tracks are not competent to rim a first-class college. My Bro. let mo say to you, the major ity of the newspapers of Oregon are favorably disposed to Christianity, and w hen you speak of them in such an im proper spirit, you only show your own w eakness, as you did when you un lar took to teacii the Albany public schools and signally failed. The influence of these wicked newspapers was sought by you when you were running for office, and you was pleased to see a favorablo mention of yourself at any time. Do not be alarmed the news papers of Oregon, bad as you charac terize them, will see to it that you and your coterie shall not be allowed to carry out youi concocted plans, which will ruin you as members of a respec table church, and destroy you person ally. Wc think too much of von for that. use anything for a wrong purpose, so if liquor is used for a wrong purpose it would not be right but a crime, you cannot point out any moral it has ever done, and authority claims that liquor cannot be digested and there is no nutriment in it, if that is so it looks like it was used for a w rong pur pose. If liquor digests how is it that a topers breath will ignite aud burn him up. Consequently we cannot be temper ate with whiskey but temperance ap plies to necessaries of life and they who eat more than their system needs are intemperate, and it is tiie cause of most diseases. I don't expect the amendment will come up to every per sons expectations, but it is to be hoped that it will terminate right for it puts king alcohol on tho side of justice. Truth being our guide and we cannot err, for truth is divine in its origin, eternal and unchangeable iu its nature and omnipotent in its constitution. W, B. Taylok. ling state money. v e are .sorry to see Bishop Keener transcending his authority when he directs this thing in so arbitrary nmntver as it seems that he is doing. The Board of Trus tees alone-can act in the premises, yet the Secretary of tho Conference is di rected by the Bishop not to give tran scripts from the minutes of the Annual Conference to anyone that may ask them, and directs certain resolutions withheld fiom taking their propt r course in being presented to tho last egi.siatiire, and yet the last conference passed a resolution directing the publi cation of said minutes. Now while we think that some of the Corvallis papers were rather hard upon those regents that favored this unnecessary action, yet there was to our mind a little dissembling that was not in ac cord with the conduct of chiistiau ministers. Silas J Day of Jackson county, Win. Lcdgerwood of Douglas county, and B. L. Buchanan of Ben ten county, aro men of unquestioned integrity, and are practical men, but in this case they were improperly in fluenced, by appealing to their church pride, and church prejudice. The positio-i advocated by Revs. Oglesl y, Craig, Michael and others, that the resolution passed at the Dayton Con ference in 1881, meant only a ".spur," and did not mean what it said, yet it was passed by a unanimous vote; is to my mind un acknowledgement of the most dishonorable proceeding it lies ever been our misfot tune to witness. We hope these brethren will rcllcct, and attend to their own business, with out a guardianship from Nashville Tcnn., or from Polk county Oregon. More anon. B. Hon. Roads and bridges are much needed in this county. Bridges at Winchester across the North Uinpqua, one at Winstons Ferry, and at other places in the coun ty would bcprc6table investments for us all. Nothing builds up a country so fast as good roads and bridges. Now as fast as possible we should like for our county authorities to look into the necessities of these matters and render relief at an early day. More good roads and good bridges is our .motto. The work will be in charge of the Railway Department of the Young Men's Christian Associa tion. The year 1S3G plaved sad havoc with many prominent men of our country. Many of them died without warning, passing away apparently in the full flush of life. Others were e-iek but p. comparatively short time. We turn to our tiics and are astonished to find that most of them died of apoplexy, of paralysis, of nerv ous prostration, of malignant i lood huiror, of Blight's disease, of heart dis ease, of kidney disease, of rheumatism or of pneumonia. It is singular that most of our promi nent men die of these disorders. Any journalist who watches the telegraph re ports, will be astonished at the number of prominent victims of these disorders. Many statements have appeared in our paper with others to tho cflbct that the diseases that carried off so many promi nent xuen in 1886, are really one disease, taking different names according to the location of the fatal effects. When a valuable horse perishes, it becomes the nine days' talk of the sport ing world, and yet thousands of ordinary horses are dying every day, their aggre gate loss is enormous, and yet thoir death creates no comment. So it is with individuals. The cause of death of prominent men creates com ment, especially, when it can bo shown that one unsuspected disease carries off most of them, and yet " vast numbers of ordinary men and women die before their time every Jyear from tho same cause." It is Baid ii the blood is kept free from uric acid, that heart disease, paralysis, nervous prostration, pneumonia.rbeuma tism, and many cases of consumption, would never be known Th;s uric acid, we are told, is the waste ot the system, and it is the duty of tho kidneys to re move this waste. . U We are told that if the kidneys aro maintained in pcifect health, the lirie, kidney, acid i3 kept out of tho blood, and these sudden and universal diseases caused by uric acid will, in a largo measure disappear. . - But how shall this be done? It is folly to treat effects. If there is any known way of getting at the cause, that way should be known to the public. We be lieve that AVarner'8 safe cure, of which so much has been written, and so much talked of by the public generally, is now recognized by impartial physicians and the public as the one specific for such diseases. ''W-fi Because public attention has been u reefed to this great remedy by means of advertising, some persons havo not ba lieved in the remedv. Wc cannot seo how Mr. Warner could immediately benefit the public in any other way, and his valuable specific should not bo con demned because some nostrums have come beforo the public in the same way, anv more than that all doctors should be condemned because so many of them are incompetent. . - It is astonishing what good opinions you hear on every side, of that great remedy, and public opinion thus based upon an actual experience, has all the weight and importance of absolute truth. At this time of the jear, the uric acid in the blood invites pneumonia and rheumatism, and there is not a man who does not dread these monsters of disease ; but he need have no fear of them we are told, if he rid the blood of the uric acid cause. -J' These words aro strong, ; and rnay sound like an advertisement, 'and be re jected as such by unthinking people, but we believe they are the truth, and as such should be spoken by every truth loving newspaper. ;f, 1 01c i lie..1.! f ..'lit 1.: tne jl it.. til'J I'.iUlltV "f i.iTIL-!v.
