FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1886 ordered his lieutenants to capture the negro preachers, and thd command was fjjven frooi the pulpit to votefor Ma hone or to prepare lor hellnrel Every man who had no character, toj lose was found in the ranks. , He set out to de- i i . i . . ? t . . i r;ji.!li. .uaucn me legislature, au uia uius iur ; liquor and cigars at the ..Exchange ho ! tel in'Richmorid, for the session of the legislature which elected hini " senator, waB 18,000. He lost all decency "of behavior, filled his house with pothouse politicians and negro wire workers, un- til his wife declined ; to r. come ' down ' stairs, and his oldest son, in his drunk en, rages, would swear . that he 1 was ashamed to be the 6on of such a father. . He went to the polls with his pistols in his pocket a thing unknown to any man sitting in the senate of the United ' States. He had appointed; the lowest ana most aegrauea man to omce 10 tar ry a proud and resentful people, and for four years held a carnival of' vice. But his downfall .was assured, o Men whom he deluded came to their senses; ' weak men became ashamed of their excesses. Every year his exertions became more desperate and bis results le3s and at last, in November, .1885, he was beaten, ' horse foot, and dragoons, and virtually driven ( from power. On the 4th of .next Mareh he retires from the senate, and if ; he . re turns to Virginia which is doubtful he will fin J himself the most loathed and hated man in the, ' state. Xs. it a wonder that staid farmers,' solid - mer chants,' grave professional men hore, when Mahone's name is .mentioned, curse him with the curse of Erunephus? Meanwhile Mr. Blaine, who made Ma- liono possible, repudiates the repudiator and airily suggests in his tiook . .that ' the general government shall assume the debt of Virginia! Washington D, C. Sept, 27, 1886. The President and his family tave returned to the White House where they are spending their . time quietly They take an almost daily drire tothe country bouse, overlooking Washing ton, which the . Presidents recently bought. The heavy rectangular stone mansion has been thoroughly remodeled and when completed will make an at tractive country home, if indeed, the rapid growth of Washington will allow it to remain long in the; country. Life at the White House at ; present is uneventful there will be ao enter tainments until the opening of the reg ular session when the usual number of receptions and state dinners .will be given. The President will begin the preparation of his annual message ! at once, so as to get it outlined ; at - least before Congress cornea back.. . He has few visitors now and no pressing busi ness, so that he can take as much time as he pleases for his message, s Mean while the heads of the Departments are preparing the data which he will need in his review of their : operations during the first year of his administra tion. It is needless to say that the bare statement of the facts will make an admirable showing for all the De partments. f Every body who has any thing to do with them knows that they never were more honestly, economi cally, ably, and let it be added .with emphasis, courteously administered be fore. . : .:. The "season" this year will be short, but it promises to be brilliant. , The President, it is said, is not fond of gen eral society. He is evidently ill , at ease, if not , actually hored at some of : the Diplomatic1 and State " dinners which official etiquette required him to give last winter. Mrs. Cleveland, however, is fond of society, and society is thoroughly in love with Mrs. Cleve land and her- social tastes may perhaps prove a foil to Mr. Cleveland's recluse disposition Mrs. Cleveland will be sought after and invited here, there . and everywhere; but sue will i V aoie, as mistress of the White House, to ac cent very few invitations. ' The presi . dent cannot accept invitations to din- ' ners or parties where he , is likely to mpnt ana of the i diplomatic corns; for the President to ! dine , out .with on : Minister of a foreign nation would be to insult all ..the other representatives and cause each and every one to ; write polite letters to their home govern ments, informing them of the insult offered their sovereigns or rulers. ; uero the Diplomatic corps is invited as a bodv. It is cenerallv known here by people versed in society rules that, , if the President is invitea no toreign rep rcsentative is to be invited. President Arthur loved to go out to dinner par ties, and he always was enabled to tell beforehand - who was to1 compose the pavtv. Cleveland has never had .occa sion to inquire, because he has never accepted invitations outside his Cabi net Whether Mrs. Cleveland will ar cept invito tions or give little entertain ments is one of the- problems "not yet solved, but anxiously awaiting sol ution, She has made many friends hereakl ready, and every one wants to see more of her, for she is a very lovable wom an. Mr3. Cleveland will most likely begin her Saturday afternoon ..recep tions as soon as it gets cool, but those are mote of an official character than social, and do not count with society here. While the social season has not strictly begun, it may be said in another sense that Washington a never oui o. season. It is pretty full the year around. People begin to come in from the seashore and mountains the latter ' part of August and are all home by the first week in September. . Washington has become a very popular Autumn re sort. ' People going south for the win ter always pass through here v .fcac year they tarry longer. They begin to . leave the summer resorts earlier and delay their trips to Florida'later. The ' custom is becoming common to stop 'in Washington the first of October, on their way south, and to stay several . weeks. The traveling' public have dis- ' covered the attractions of .Washington as an atumnal and early winter resort Before these birds of passage hav flown" the social and political season - has begun.
