Ed. Review: Will you allow one
who has ben unjustly abused by the
Editor of the Plaindealer in his leader
of last week, a few words in reply to
the old fossil, who, in order to reek
his vengeance on a person who has
told him some wholesome truths, se
cured the services of some willing tool
to write a leader for him which be
himself could not prepare, but after
wards proceeds to palm off as his own?
The cowardice of said Editor is aprar-1 , .. .. . .. . , . t
. ' Hsuch entire satisfaction that he will be
ent from his article couched in lan
guage unbecoming that of any gentle
man, in which he dared not mention
the name of the party whom he accuses;
1 but near the close "by cotton," he
cannot avoid a betrayal of his foul mo-
live and his desire to injure and ridi
cule one whom he has wronged and
whose crust tfo has ' violated. All
of which, however, is characteristic of
the man. Instead of ascertaining to a
certainty who was the author of the
article that appeared in The Review of
the 23rd ult, signed "Argus," he, with
his usual recklessness and his natural
dwsire to injure one against whom he
has conceived a dislike, proceeds to
malign and slander the wrong party.
Presume he called into requisition
his pretended detective skill, but in
this case, as in former instances, he
is decidedly mistaken. Wonder if
while enjoying the sweets of a cocktail
the true "Argus" did not escape his
extreme vigilance. "By cotton" it is
sufficient here to state, that a more
consummate, conglomerated, mean and
.contemptible series of premeditated
falsehoods were never before thrown to
gether in a newspaper leader, as ap
peared in the Plaindealer last week. It
is unnecessary to deny each vitupera
tive utterance lof its author, it is enough
to state, thai "by cotton," the party
whom he has accused of writing
"Argus" had! nothing to do with its
preparation, though it contained many
truths. The party, whom he so de
signedly desired to ridicule, has "never
yet worked against honorable Republi
can nominees, like the present Editor
of the Plaindealer, nor has he ever
sought, through hypocraBy, to divide
that party, notwithstanding his false
assertions. Neither does he, like that
Editor, sneak into the backdoors of
saloons to suck his whiskey toddies
before breakfast or at any other time,
nor hypocritically advocate prohibition
sentiments through the columns of a
newspaper, and while abroad indulge
in the winecup, nor has he ever become
incapacitated to perform offiicial duties
from the effects of an over indulgence
in the cup. "By cotton," that Editor
must have been very tired. As to
his pretentions to sound Republican
doctrine we leave to the Republican
voters of Douglas county, who know
quite enough of him. Mr. Editor you
will pardon the writer of this, for ask
ing space in your columns, but "by cot
ton" this is the only resource left one
etrayed, maligned and slandered.
"By Cotton."
Taos. R. Sheridan is the Demo
cratic candidate for county clerk, not
from any solicitation of his own, but
upon the deirand of the people. Al
though not a candidate or the nomina
tion and that the names of several com
petent men has been used in that con
nection, his name being casually men
tioned, was soon upon every lip and
when the county convention met, pub
lic opinion was so unanimous it was
only necessary to ratify it, as was done,
by acclamation. This high compliment
was not undeserved. Raised in this
county from his early youth, as a cit
izen, as a practical mechanic and as
county clerk he has done well his part
and honestly earned the high esteem
m which he is everywhere held. On
the ticket he is unquestionably the
right mun in the right place and he
will be our next clerk.
B. C. Agee our candidate for Sheriff
deservedly stands among the leading
and enterprising citizens of our county,
During his sixteen years residence
among us he has been extensively en
gaged in farming and dealing in cattle
and has established a reputation for en
ergy and honesty second to none. Pos
sessing great moral and physical cour
age, strictly temperate in his babies,
kind and genial in his manners, he is
known and respected by alL It is very
seldom that a man of such decided
character has so few enemies. If the
voters of this county intend to select
or its officers only the good men, Ben
Agee is certain of election. He is an
old pioneer having come to Oregon in
52 and has proven himself worthy the
name.
J udge Fitzhugh'b name has become
m JJouzlas county synonymous tor
business integrity and honesty unim
peached. The county's finances and
the general improvements in bridges
and public buildings in the county al
show that the old County board, Fitz
hugh, Hall and McGee have been faith
ful servants. We have not aught
against Mr. McGee, for a better man
could not well be found for comuis
sioner in all that section, except it be
A. Lamb our present candidate. Fitz-
hugh, Hall and Lamb will make
county board of which we might all be
proud. - ! i
B. F. Waite one of Douglas county's
next Representative is a man thorough
ly conversant witn our interests, ana
well qualified as a scholar to put our
needs before the next Legislature in a
shape that will secure enactment
without dilly dallying always and ac
complishing nothing. He with his co
leagues are men that will go to work
and secure that kind of legislation that
will not require an "extca session to
remedy" at a great and unnecessary
outlay of the peoples money.

doubt. A more reliable, solid and com
potent man could not be found in Doug
las than he, for the office for which he
has the honor to aspire.
Our next School Supt. Prof. G,
RuBsell of Oakland is a gentleman
splendid ability, a strict disciplinarian
thorough in books, social in manners.
temperate, moral and whoso habits are
of tho best sort. These are some of the
qualities of our candidate for School
Supt.
Our candidates for Justices of the
Peace and Constable, are well qualified
and just the men for the place. Mr.
Gannon has held the office of Justice of
the Peace for many years in California
and elsewhere, Mr. Harpham knows
the law and Peter Junger can bring the
unrully to time.
The news comes to us thatF. A.
Metz of Oakland is well qualified for
the position that the peoplo of Douglas
county will impose upon him, that
of Representative. Mr. Metz is
well spoken of in his section and will
poll an extra large vote.
V. L Arrington has been in our coun
ty so long that he fully understands
what' kind of legislation the citizens
need, and hence the necessity of send
ing such men tc the Legislature to rep
resent us. He will make us a most
excellent Representative.
Personally we do not know Hugh
McKenzie, but from the most reliable
sources we learn that he is a man of
undoubted integrity and ability, and
will do much to forward the interests
of his constituency.' All in all we have
a splendid ticket from top to bottom.
The Democrats of Multnomah have
nominated Miss. Sabin for School Supt.
This lady is a most 'excellent teacher
and she will be elected by a large ma
jonty. We second the motion.
A Republican convention that could
ignore D. P, Thompson as a candidate
for governor and select such a man as
T. K. Cornelius should never have met
World.
Dr. Graham for Coroner is neither
diminishing in sizo nor popularity.
His qualifications for tlie position aro
beyond dispute, and we hope to see
him elected.

It h our
duty as a journalist to be
fair and unpartial in all our views to
the people. It is in this spirit that we
nvite examination of the State ticket
nominated last week by the Republi
can convention. It possssscs no prom
inent, elements of strength but on the
contrary presents many features of
weakness. The nomination of Her
mann was perhaps as acceptable as
any made. He has so far displayed
considerable activity, made some effort
in the way of introducing bills and has
arranged to secure frequent and favor
able mention from the Pacific Coast
renorter resident at Washington. This
individual is an ardent Republican
and colors the news telegraphed by
him more or less flattering to represen
tative of that party. After all the
enquiry is quite pertinent what has
Hermann actually done! Let the
people enquire and answer next June-
He is not so strong as he was when he
was elected. Col. Tom Cornelius'
nomination for Governor was in re
sponse to the demands of the old
ring" manipulators and commands
respect. He is uulettered, unqualified
and unworthy and the best interests of
the State require- thai he should be de
feated- The selection of McBride was
a part of the programme prepared by
the ringsters. Marston's nomination
for Treasurer was intended to be
rake to the Hebrew members of the
Republican party and is exceedingly
distasteful Mr. McElrov for Schoo
Superintendent is a verv intelligent
faithful' man. His competitor wil!

this matter the people are sure in any
a good useful and con
cieutious Public Instructor. As the
Oregonian knows the personel of this
ticket better than we-we quote the
opinion it expressed last Friday,
"The ticket as a whole is not consid
ered a strong one by the delegates and
many are outspoken in declaring it
will have a 'hard row to hoe.' The
success of the Portland managei
getting the lions share of the ticket is
not a pleasant pill for the county dele
gates to swallow. If the truth must
be told the prospects are not considered
hopeful." And so mote it be.
For Supt. of Public instruction J,
R. N. Bell of Douglas was ncniina
and fully appreciates the high honor
thus tendered, and believes that the
requisite qualifications for this impor
tant trust , are time and adaption to this
work, in order to serve the people
with honor.and profit to the incumbent,
and realizing that no great amount of
special honor ts the State, nor partic
ular profit toHho individual was appar
ent, he declined. In Benton county
once by 'i&n oversight" the Democrats
failed to nominate a man against Prof.
McEIroy for County Superintendent,
and "an oversight" of that kind now
in the State, would not imperil our
school work, nor bring the world to a
premature end.

We had supposed that all parties
would conduct this campaign in a spir
it of fairness, and honorable to all.
Yet we hear it whispered in a low
breath by some designing Republicans,
that this candidate on the Democratic
ticket, is not qualified and that he steps
into saloons at the back door, and that
other candidates want tho office for
some of their relatives, and a hundred
more misstatements if possible, in the
same line. Now we say emphatically
that there is not an unqualified man
on the Democratic ticket for any office
for which he has been nominated, and
no Republican nepotism will bo prac,
ticed by the Democrats. Some things
are too barefaced to be belie ved.
We see that both Senators from
Oregon, Hons. Dolph and Mitchell are
favorable to increasing the appropria
tions 'from 880,0000 100,000 for
Yaquina Bay, and it ought to be done
for with that amount something could
be done which will be of great advan
tage to all concerned. ,
The Republican ticket in Douclas county is
composed of good substantial men with a few
possible eNceplions. The Democrats, while
they have '' a good ticket also, should be at
their posU, remembering this is no slow race.
