DEMOCRACY THE BEST.
THE SWAMP ZAXD SWIXDLE.
Ed. Review: The expose of he
swamp land swindle made by Hon.
T. W. Davenport in last Thursday's
Oregonian should attract the attention
and'excite the indignation of every man
in the state outside of the swamp land
ring. The acts of the state board in
aiding and abetting this swindle upon
the people of the state ore open to the
severest censure. In placing beyond
the reach of actual settlers and in the
hands of such cormorants as Hen.
Owens nearly five hundred thousand
acres of the best lands in the state,
these officials have betrayed a trust
reposed in theni bv an honest, confiding
people; according to tne - records as
shown by Mr. Davenport, the afore
said Owens has been allowed to pur

Governor Thayer's administration 127,-

A Democratic government is a gov
ernment by the people and for the peo
ple. It imbibes the law and spirit of
pei-fect liberty. It was the chief char
teristic of patriots and humanitarians
of our glorious country in 1776 and is
still alive and reviving and will last as
long as mankind.
All law exists0 in principle and in
fact and when endorsed by society and
mutually adopted upon Democratic
principles it is no difficult matter to
obtain obedience to the law by the con
sent of the governed . But should our
government assume another form ad
veise or foreign to a Democracy and a
law should be enacted just and exped
ient in its nature it oulibe more dif
ficult to obtain respect or obedience
from the people. Aji intelligent and
free people who are law abiding are not
much inclined to compulsory measures
though they will abide by the decision
of the majority. The majority can
suppress evils which a minority never
did nor never can do. Tho Emperor

A Safeguard.
The fatal rapidity with which slight
Colds and Coughs frequently develop
into the gravest maladies of the throat
and lungs, is a consideration which should
impel every prudent person to keep at
hand, as a household remedy, a bottle of
AYER'S CHEERY PECTORAL.
Nothing else gives such immediate relief
and works so sure a cure in all affections
of this class. That eminent physician.
Prof. F. Sweetzer, of the Maine Medical
School, Brunswick, Me., says :
"Medical science has produced no other ano
dyne expectorant so good as Atkb's Cbxbrt
Pectoral. It is invaluable for diseases of the
throat and longs." '
The same opinion is expressed by the
well-known Dr. L.J.Addison, of Chicago,
IH., who says :
"I have never found, in thirty-five years of
continuous study and practice of medicine, any
preparation of so great value as Aybb'bChihby
Pkctohai, for treatment of diseases of the
throat and longs. It not only breaks np colds
and cores severe coughs, but is more effective
than anything else in relieving even the most
scrigus broncliial and pulmonary affections."
AYER'S
Cherry Pectoral
Is not a new claimant for popular confi
dence, but a medicine which is to-day
saving the lives of the third generation
who have come into being Bince it was
first offered to the public.
There Is not a household in which this
invaluable remedy has once been in
troduced where its use has ever been
abandoned, and there is not a person
who has ever given it a proper trial
for any throat or lung disease suscep
tible of cure, who has not been made
well bv it.
AYER'S CHERRY PECTORAL has,
in numberless instances, cured obstinate
cases of chronic Bronchitis, Larynejtis,
and even acute Pneumonia, and has
saved many patients in the earlier stages
of Pulmonary Consumption. It is a
medicine that only requires to be taken in
small doses, is pleasant to the taste, and Is
needed in every house where there are
children, as there is nothing so good as
AYER'S CHERRY PECTORAL for treat
ment of Croup and Whooping Cough.
These are all plain facts, which can be
verified by anybody,
red l
nnd should be re
ly everybody.
