Freedom of speech and of the press are of the highest rights of American citizens. Equally true is it that a slan derous tongue and a licentious press are elements of tyranny and curse to true liberty. This deplorable fact is prominently developed in the noise that has been made by the newpapers relative to the connection of Lamar and Garland with thc Bell-Pan Tele phone matter. They have endeavored to convey the impression that there has been something done by these offi cials extremely mysterious, secret and corrupt whereas in truth and fact there is nothing of the kind in it . In dup, regular and proper form spe cific charges were made and filed in the Attorney General's office to the effect that the Bell patent had been obtained by fraud and in derogation to the rights of others" Solicitor Generr.1 Goode became satisfied that there was sufficient in the case to warrant its yibaiission to the courts and he so ordered it. This action was deemed premature and the preliminary exami nation was relegated to the Interior Department where it properly belonged. For a month Secretary Lamar heard exhaustive arguments pro and con and finally rcccommended that thc Law department might proceed with it. Thereupon arose a howl long, loud, deep and vicious and the press has lKC0,liC nervously excited only as excile ami stiniulale it. llf.fm. i- 01.,:.,(,rif f Cabinet Garland was a very distin-1 Ulsll8cl lawyer and was employed in many important pasca. If thc Democratic party will stand pat it will bo victorious in our state. All the evils existing may be remedied in the old national parties. Metropolis. MR. 11ERMAXX. As suggested by our correspondent last week the indications arc that a powerful effort will be made at the next Republican Convention to shelve Hon. Dinger Hermann. Of course, we have no special interest in Republican nondnations but on the contrary will cordially support the Democratic can didate. However, as Mr. Hermann is our fellow townsman and personal friend we fee1 considerable pride in him. Realties it has been the custom of Uith'parties of late years to reward their Congressman with a re-nomination. The Democrats thus compli inented Hon, L. F. Lane and Gov. Whiteaker and the Republicans nomi nated and elected Hon. M. C. George the second time. Mr. Hermann was at much pains to acquaint himself with the varied interest of the State and thus far has shown much enthusi siasm and industry in behalf of his constituency. It is not to the interests of the democracy that Mr. Hermann should be rc-nominated. Wc can beat anybody else far easier. Tf Ajrior. a he telegraph gives us the informa Hon that nn Inst.
