ROSEBURG REVIEW FRIDAY, JANUARY, 29, 1SSG. THE TEMEHAXCE SITVATIOX. Much is being said on this suhjtxt at the present time. Now we rvi tor ate what we have said before, that the true conservative position for Demo crats is not to join a third party, but persistently to adhere to our principles . which have been bought with a patri ot inn, equal to the emergency of the hour. Stand by your colors, and show to all that the party has sufficient vital force within itself, to expel all wrong, and sense enough to prevent . and remedy "imperfect legislation." Let every Democrat be governed by the Mngna Charta that our forefathers bt(ucathed to us, "the majority of the people shall rule." Therefore the true way for all to act on this question of temperance that is now agitating the nations of the earth, so far as. Democrats are con cerned in Oregon, is to go to your pii maries, and conventions, and see that men go to the legislature that will favor the submission of this question to the people to vote upon, jusL as we did recently on the Woman Suf frage question. To prevent the sub mission of tins, or any question of moment to the people is un-Democratic and inconsistent with American insti tutions. The prohibitionist can de mand no more, foi to do so, would damage the very measure he is seeking to uphold. ' the vnraior.oox of XEin oi :i C1TEM EXT. It is often charged against revival influences that they result, for the most part, in mere nervous excitement and it is supposed by those who make this chru-ge that nervous excitement is, in iia nature, wholly unprofitable. Yet it is an ascertained physiological fact that the biain is the organ of the mind and that every sensation, thought and emotion has for its invariable an tecedent, some change in the neive sifbstanco of which the bruin is composed- Given this thought or that feeling and we have a corresponding nerve change, and when the thought involves great mental application or the feeling is profound, then the cere bral nerve substance become so rapid and violent as to constitute what is called nervous excitement. Any sweeping disparagement therefore, of nervous excitement, as such, is a disparagement of alL intense intel lectual operations and profound emo tions. The only point in this connection which can bo made without absurdity against revival influences is, that they result in emotional rather than intel lectual nervous excitement, and not strongly based on mental convictions they are apt to prove transient and deceptive. This point can" be made with a degree of force for thcie have been; doubtless, so called "revival con- verts" ,who have rapidly backsl&en after deep . emotional experiences. J But the history of the church proves I that such backsliders are, after all, comparatively few. For, while the aim of revival preaching is to produce an immediate effort on the feelings. I these feelings are. in the ffreatmalnritv of cases, supported by intellectual con- victions already possessed, but which have had no influence on the life be- cause they have never been vitalized by corresponding emotions. It is to be considered, too, that even where the emotions have been aroused without antecedent convictions the convert ia yet moved by his feelings to place him- seu nnaer those eclesiastical and other If - - . He is an enterprising gentleman ot marked ability and much influence. Linn is one of our demo eratic sisters upon which we can rely under all circumstances. I SI -trill ItEETS. I .. The following correspondence bhows the posibilkies of our soil. Mr. Dean of Coquillq City received ihc analysis as given in Mr. Dyer's letter below and will publish .his same matter in the Herald this week. Beyond perad- venture of conjecture this industry of sugar -ocetjgrowing could be made one of the most paying industries in all this belt adapt d especially to this particu lar beet. We call particular attention to the letter below from Mr. E. 11. Dyer, superintendent oi the Alvarado Beet Sucjar Works, lie snves analysis of some beets tsvo lots which were un fortunately of the wrong kind, one of which was raised on the mountain east of this town, and the other, the long beets, by Mr. J. Ji. Hunt in town on the creek bottom land. The beets also had the disadvantage of standing jin the ground till the winter rains caused them to make the second growth. With proper seed and prop er cultivation there is no reason wjiy we should not raise exceeding rich beets. Let us work the matter up. There is comparatively a small area of land in the United States that is adapted to the sugar beet, and that' area is on this coast, and the western portion jof Oregon the best of it. Land cultivated to sugar beets on this coast averages 207 per acre each season. Nothing could help. this coast so muohi as for ii to "produce the sugar necessary for the U. S. When wo come toisee that we import all but a very small fraction of this product, its importance is apparent. .Standard Sugar Iletiucrv. I Alvarado, (Jab, Dec. 12." J. At Dean, Esq. Sii; Yours just at hand. 1 received the box of beets twjo days ago. I give you result of analysis. ) l.OXoBfcETo. Total solids, 17.2 Sugar,. 12.7 Salts and other organic matter, 1.7 Co-enicient of purity To. j SlIOItT liKKTS Total, solids, . . . 10.0 Sugar, 1.5 Salts and other organic matter, 3.f Co-etlich.-nt of purity, 7G.G Thestj; results are much better than could be expected, taking into consid eration jthat they were not cultivated for sug:r, and perhaps the seed was of inferioij quality. Another singular fact is that the ill grow n, short, stubby beets were the best. They were less in sugar but contained less impurities of which raised the co eflicient of purity to 7G.G, Beets that give a co-ellicicnt of purity of 7o are profitable to work into sugar. It must bo owing to the soil that made the short beets turn out so wcIlL for the long beets were better cultivated. From the result obtained from these Wets, vou need have no fears of growing profitable beets for sugar qn your lands. Yours Truly, E, II. Dyer; From the time of Cleveland's nomi nation juntil a couple months since, the Orcgonian, with gicut persistency, called ;him "lecherous," "ignorant" ignorant us; wnd many other strong terms o show his absolute unfitness morally or mentally to be Pi esident of the United States. These charges it repeats from day today with venomous zd, tjliat it finally came to bel;eve them. And just as soon as it became satisfied of their truth, it at once an- nounced that Cleveland was more of a Republican than a Democrat, and Republicans hung their heads in disgust an3 Democrats smiled most audib le at the Oregoniau's stupidity. We do not know why the ad ministration did so. Perhaps some special friend of his at Washington was the power behind the throne. A great many think it strange that so partisan a Republican should receive the smiles of this administration, and especially so, when lny Mr. Murphy, during the last campaign predicted all sorts of disaster to this free coun try if the Demounts ever ascended to power, ai d said a good maiiv hard things about that "inferior race" called Democrats. Now we think the strangeness of Murphy's appointment lies entirely at another point, and that is, ho w could so intense a Republican as ho accept an appointment at the hands of those whom hi! attempted to smile, and at the same time preserve his consistency as an honorable Ro il ican.
