Never ''contract a friendship with a man that is not better than thyself. -Confucius. Living on hope iz like living oii wind s good way tew git plmll, but a toor way tew git phat. Josh Billings. It is reported from -Paris that Pas teur has succeeded in curing a boy in the advanced stage of hydrophobia. A man who has tastes like mine but in greater power, will rule tne any day, and make me love my ruler. Emerson. Canada wants the state ot Maine. In case of annexation, sonic miscreant wants to know if it would include .Blame. . God's laws were never designed to be like cobwebs, which catch the little tlies but suller tho large ones to break through. Cleanlynesz is certainly sekond among the virtews, and the rarest ov all fcarakters is a dirty Christain. Josh Billings. An insult from certain sources is a compliment When an ass kicks at you he does so because he recognizes you are unlike him. A Washington correspondent says President is beinsf urged to recommend absolute free trade with Mexico and all South American nations. Never put much confidence in such as put no confidence in others. A man prone to suspect evil is mostly looking in his neighbor for what he sees in himself. A Buffalo man has invented a cross country atrial balloon and cars travel ing on a cable from one aerial station to another, lip thinks it must super sede the elevated -railroad system. In Belgium 200 freight trains which formerly ran on Sunday have been stopped. Nearly 8,000 workmen who "were employed in the Government workshops have been set free on Sun days. Little Charley -"Papa, will you buy me a drum1!'' Fond father "Ah, but. my boy, you will disturb me very much if I do" Charley 'tO no, papa I won't drum except when you're asleep." Pittsburgh Chronicle. A deposit of sal ammonia has been discovered at Churchill, Cal. It covers several acres! Sal ammonia is a val uable article of commerce, and was first discovered in the sands of "'Africa. It --""'is worth in its crude state about $100 per ton. If there is anything under the bright silver moon, that will make angels turn red under the eyes, seeing an old maid, near-sighted, trying to thread a fino-eyed needle, when she , sees some old Bach coming her way, will do it. What is said to be the largest gun in world is being constructed in J ersey J City. It is breech-loading, sixty fee long. The propelling' power will be compressed air, wliich will discharge a 150-pound dynamite cartridge five feet long. There is always presumption that a pure-hearted will be a right minded man; and it i3 delightful to see such a one stand up before tho ambitious so phist, and dart on his ingenuities a clear ray of conscience that scatters them like mist. The divintf light of a good mind is too much for the mysti fications of guilt. Martineau. ':That is a buckshot dose," said a -'''druggist- yesterday as he finished a prescription. ''What is a buckshot dose?" "Whcny a doctor don't know exactly what to give a patient, he or ders a half-dozen things put into his prescription, hoping that one ot them may reach the right spot. We call it a buckshot prescription, because a man loads his gun to the muzzle on the snie principle." Atlanta Constitu -" - tion. ' . Wife (to husband) A boy at the xloor just left this note. It's addressed ; to you and marked "present." Has band "present?" I dont know who could be sending me a present Did the boy bring anything else! 1 Wife (excitedly) No. perhaps the present is in the note. Maybe it's a check. . Her affections center upon a doll whose name the longest her tongue could frame at tho time it was be stowed is Elizabeth. For some mis demeanor of unusual gravity this young lady was sent to bed at an early hour and iu tho woe attending the infliction of this punishment to take with her the cherished Elizabeth to share her couch. Realizing her desolation she summoned her mother by calls from the chamber. "Mamma! I want Elizabeth. Please ' bring her up to me!" This mitigation of the penalty w as denied; but the demand -was repeated, each refusal was being followed by a yet more petulant request, until finally there came a suggestion of the last re sort to maternardicipluie: . "Nellie, I am afraid'I shall have to como up and punish you." ;.. "Well, when you come up, please bring Elizabeth." . STATE XEIVS. Mr. Brown will not pay the license fixed by our city dads. This leaves Coquille City without a saloon. Tho gardens in this town remind one of early summer. Bean, tomato, pea, and iotato vines are in full bloom. Herald. Allen Arlington left for Arizona on the Arago,' with the hope of benefitting his health by the change of climate. His many friauds wish him a pleasant voyage, and an early restoration of health. Eddie Tower fell over board while playing on the wharf in front of the mill store last Friday. Anson Rogers was close by with a boat, and rescued him, none the worse for his in voluntary plunge. Coos Bay News. ; The members from Douglas and Jackson counties were made '-a memorial-committee to inquire into the ex pense of a monument to General Jo soph Lane, to be located at Salem, re port to be made next session. A fine monument should be erected to the memory of the deceased hero. On the last trip down the Arago, Coos Bav and Areata crossed tho bar on the same tide. A strong head wind and sea was experienced during the entire passage which was favorable for the Arago in a race, and she ar rived 12 hours ahead of the Coos Bav, and 21 hours ahead-of the Areata. Siglin says Representative Roberts was a good painstaking representative, and his standing in the House was above the average. Roberts savs sub stantially the same of Sig. Those fellows have been doing something. and each is afraid the other will give him away, is our opinion. t-C B. N. J udge Mosher comes out in an article in defense of the democrats who sup portedMitchell. They need nodefense; it was the democratic party, endorsed by the democratic press of the state. It was a choice between an honorable enemy and a renegade democrat The mere naming of Mitchell and Geo. H. Williams as contestants; should at once decide every honorable man of whatever party. .Coos Bay News. A prominent grain dealer has in formed a Standard reporter that for the past 90 days there have been 50,000 bushels of wheat brought to that city, on an average, every day. This means about $25,000 worth each day, and it is generally handled during a work- ins time of ten hours. The same rate will probably be kept up jfor another 90 days. Some idea of the wheat trade at that port may lie had from the above. It 13 reported that a vessel, bottom up, was seen off the bar last Saturday. Some are under the impression that it is the schooner Jennie Stella, which belongs here, and which was taking a cargo of piles from Puget Sound to San Francisco. The vessel is Ion over due, and she may bo lost, but when it is remembered that 1 6 coasters are ruissing since the last gale, the chancc3 are favorable for it being some other craft. Coos Bay News. A Chinese sheepherder on the north fork of the John Day river, had a sin gular encounter with a bear the other day. Bruin was hugry and visited the corral for a fresh supply of mutton. John did not believe in such pilfering and attempted to slay his visitor witl an ax. Tho latter had too much Sul livan like science for the Mongolian and knocked him out with an upper cut Not beinjc fond of Chinese meat he left John for dead and carried off sheep. -John Dawnc, the Salem man who was appointed by President Cleveland to the Judgeship, and over whose ap pointment so much has been said, anc who was relieved from that place by appointment of his successor, and who was reported as having skipped out from that far- northern country for fear of lmving to answer severa crooked transactions in this state, is said to have turned up at Victoria, en route to Oregon to court investiga tion. About seven months ago Tom Mc Nary presented Mr. Backensto with a j silver-gray fox kitten, captured in the I mountains above Brownsville, which he has since kept confined in a cage. Some time since, however, he managed to escape and since that time has re mained about tho house and yard, and daily can be seen playing with a neighbor's do; as familiar as can be. As ho attains his age he exhibits all the cunning characteristics of the fox, for all the efforts of Mr. Backensto to catch him have utterly failed. Disseminator. It is learned that Frank C. Shrum, son of J. W. Shrura living near Bass saw mill east of this city, has been heard of, together with young Lehman for whom inquiry was made. Thay remained over night at a house near Eugene, a few nights ago, and arc now at Walter's saw mill on Long Tom, west of Eugene. J, W. Shruta desires to expi ess his thanks to the neighbors and friends who assisted in the search fer the wayward Frank when it was supposed he had met with some acci dent or 'suthin." Frank has certainly acted strangely as has the other young man, and are deserting of severe cen sure for having put kind parents and friends to so much trouble and on so much suspense as they haye. States- -fban. obust Health Is not always cn.foyea by those who seem to lioness it. The taint of corrupted blootl may be secretly inwlenniniiisr the constitution. In time, the poison will cer tainly show its effects, iml with all tho more virulence the longer it lias been allowed to permeate the system. Each pimple, sty, boilj skin disorder and sense of unnatural lassitude, or languor, in one of Nature's warnings of the consequences of neglect. Ayer's Sarsaparilla Is the only remedy tbat can be relied upon, in all cases, to eradicate the taint of hered itary disease and the special corruptions of the blood. It is the only alterative that is .sufficiently powerful to" thoroughly eU-anse the system of Scrofulous and Mercurial impurities and Uie pollution of Contagious Diseases. Jt also neu tralizes the poisons left by Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever, and enables rapid recuperation from the enfeeblemeut and debility caused by these diseases. Myriads of Cures Achieved by Ayer's SAnsAr-Ann.L.i, in the past fort'v years, are attested, and there . is no blood disease, at all possible of cure, that will not yield to it. "Whatever tho ailments of this class, and wherever found, from the senrvr of the Arctic circle to the veldt-sores'' of South Africa, this rem edy lias afforded health to the, sufferers by" whom it was employed. Druggists everywhere can cite numerous eases, with in their personal knowledge, of remark able cures wrought by it, where all other treatment had been unavailing. Teople will do well to Trust Nothing Else than Ayer's Saks vrATUi.i.A. 'Niimrroiis crude mixtures are offered to the public as '"blood purifiers.'' which ouly allure the patient with the, pretense of many cheap doses, and with which it is folly to experiment while disease is steadily be coming more deep-seated and difficult of cure. Some of these mixtures do mueh lasting harm. Bear in mind that the only medicine that can radically purify the vitiated blood is Ayer's Sarsaparilla, TKErARED BV Dr. J. C.
