110SEBURG REVIEW FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 18S5. WILLFVLLY OR 1GXORAXTLY. We clip the following from tli3 Al bany Democrat, and it trath is appar ent: ".V- ; :'f The Jacksonville Sentinel says: "Let it be kept before the people that this adminitiation has not pai l off a dollar of the public dbt nor taken a ingle step toward formulating any plans for the relief of depressed or the en couragement of a single manufacturing establishment. It has througli the workings of republican' laws collected to the aggregate of over three hundred and fifty million dollars but there it ended. It has not followed republican plans of. paying the inteiest bearing bonds and thus affording real relief During the campaign they were going to divide out greenback reserve. Y hy don't they pay out what the laws re quire them to do any way 1 Charitably, we suppose the Sentinel ditor is ignorant of what lie. was say ing above for so much ignorance ind error ara larely shown in so brief a space: Now for the facts: The public debt was reduced duriug the month of March $483,000. See Oregonian April 2. For April it was reduced 5,464, 596.39. S e Oregonian May 2. 1 r May it was reduced 4,225,000. See Oregonian June 2. For June it was reduced $8,500,000. See Oregonian July 2. For July it was reduced 8, 662,789,96: See Oregonian August 3. For August it was reduced 3,879,052,- 17. SeeOjfegonian Sept. 2. .For Sept. it was reduced 12,757,865. See Ore- conian Oct. 2. There is a total red uc- tion in seven months of 43,072,403, 52". Yet in view of all these facts and that this administration has not paid a dollar on the public debt. And then , any plan to encourage a bingle manu facturing establishment. Very well, it is uo more the business of the govern inent to assist private manufacturing estabahments that happen to be de pressed because of the hard times, than it is to assist the farmer wlio finds him self unable to make both ends meet ir consequence of the hard times and the low price of grain. The far u;er, the la boring man, and the mechanic under re publican rule, havB be. n taxed heavily through the instrumentality of a high tariff for the purpose of "encouraging manufacturing establishment" but we hope no more of such encouragement will be given again at such a fearful cost to consumers. But we are further told that this administration has not followed republican plans of paving the inteaest bearing bonds etc." Well, we are truly glad they have not. For one of these plans of the republicans was to change five hundred millions of fivetwenty bonds payable in currency to bonds payable in gold coin, and this was done when gold was at premium. But we would ask our contemporary when, did the republicans redeem any bonds except when they issued now boridsin their stead. Republicans must do better than the alove or their fault finding will avail but little. SEXATOR. Inasmuch as it1; pleased Pro. E. G. Hursb sometime since, then our worthy cotemporary, to hint us with the prob able caodidacv of ourselves for senator, we can more clearly see that he was "measuring our corn in bis half bush el;" that the fact if his retirement from the Plaindetlcr indicates that the "Sen atorial bee is buzzing in his bonnt," and ho must bo only waiting for Gov. Moo.ly to call an extra session that his fondest hopes may be realized. We warn the Governor not to call the ex tra session but if he does, the Review would not be set back by having Pro. Hursh as our next IT. S. Senator for with a Congressman and Senator both from Roseburg we could then have some hopes of making the Umpqua river navigable to the seashore, which would be quite an opening for this sec tion. Information Sought, Ed. Review: In your l ist is a com munication from the pen of "Evolution ist" without commenting o t any" thing in said article we will simply ask "Ev olutionist" to give in bin own language the meaning ho alTixcs to each of the following words-"E vol ntion," "Th'o:o ,gy," Differentiation," and "Proto plasm". We know what Webster says but we want to know from hi? own pen the precise meaninghe attaches to them. We do not know that there i-t any dif ference between us as to their meaning or indeed as to our beliefs until he gives the desired information. , Respectfully, Hunter. EXTRA SESSIOX. Gov. Moody has called an extra ses sion i)f the Legislature to meet at Salem, November 9th. We trust that the members of the Legislature will convena in a spirit of fa'rness and con ciliation, do the work that is before them promptly and adjourn as quickly as possible. The people are in no humor to have their money frittered away. While the Review saw no necessity for an extra session, and still thinks it vss called through partisan pressure, still wa wilt await develop ments and judge by actions. RESIGXEJ). Daniel Manning lesigned his chair, ruanship of the New York Democratic tate central cotnmittte when ho was appointed Secretary of the Treasury. We make thi3 statement for the bene fit of Republicans who do not, or can not read. Now is the time to subscribe for the Review. JIHTL Y TO Ml. EVOL UTIOSIST. I am -not "Sir WiJliira Thompson" nor the "Holy Inquisition," but an ad vocate of science which is knowledge. If the theory of Evolution according to Darwin, 11 aeckel, Huxley, and all of their deciples be true it will stand the nery test oi investigation, j.i raise it inut be reckoned with past mconsistan- ciesaiid dehitions. Rev. Joseph Cook,' Rev. Dr. McCosh, and Prof." Asa Gray call it Theistic Evolution. J Henry Ward Beecher comes in the ranks too on the Chinese question but right here we contend for the survival of. the fitest and farther physical and intellectual developemeut of our own raceuy Keepmg x.um i,...- vy u wiwxau uuu- race. v e uo not uuueve in evoivni" backwards first to the Chinese then to the Otangotang then to the Monkey and finally to the Moneron or Proto plasm of life. History nor tradition indicates that a white man came from the ranks of the Chinese nor thatva Chinaman and came from the Monkey tribes. The mon- kevs have tails like dogs while the Chinese have tails on their heads. If the Chiuese were ever moakevs we can not tell when they losttueir tails. But to the fcubiect. Those modern Professors of science claim that they have found the secret of the whole matt; r. The prott pb-.sm of lie or the little Monei on -having life, and com posed of pure Albumen. But chemical analysis is unable to determine or dis criminate between Albumen and Fibrm. Some of those scientists con tradict themselves bv saying that no thing can have life without organs and these organs raustiti some way be sup plied with water. If this is the case those small particles of Albumen or iibrin have not lite, being puro of one substance only not composed of organs ior water. Bet we pre fer to be God's peculiar people. L. C.Hill Editor Review: The citizens of t'.e usual quiet and peaceful county of Josephine have been treated to great amount of excitement the past few weeks, which seems to be on the in crease and all on account cf the Bourne injunction suit. Pistols have been nourished but so far no blood shed. The genial Charles llughts, county clerk o i one side and editor S'ine and the Hon. 'vl. W. Riddle aie the most active participants in the geneial row. The "Argus" takes all the interest its limited space will permit. But to the forefront upholding the interest of Bourne is" Riddle, formerly of Douglas. He appears to desire to make the whole matter of the location of the Court House a personal matter and is partic ularly anxious to secure the scalp" of Sol. Abraham. To the unprejudiced observer it looks as though Mr. Abra hams was going to get away with .the contest as he is carrying out in good faith all his propositions made to the county. He has deeded the county cne-'ialf his laud as pur agreement and has Agreed to pay one-halt' the expen ses of the tnal and this he will doubt less do, Mr. Riddle and editor Stine to the contrary notwithstanding. The truth of the whole matter appears to be th.it Air. Abraham made the best offers and they were accepted by the county court. The efforts of the oppo sition seem fco be actuated more by pet ty malice than grave public reasons. That the Court had a right to lotaU the building where they did is not dis cussed but Mr. Abraham is attacked in a most unreasoning manner. Tht writer does not wish to impugn tht motives oi any one but it would ap pear better business for the gentlemen named to try to build up Josephine county than to drag her into a costly law suit j nst to wreak vengeance on Mr. Abraham for personal grievances'. ' Grant's Pass, Oct. I2,h. Good Sjteerh, Professor Horner, who is a most excellent teacher, has induced the young folks of the puMic school to organize a literary society in which they are evincing profitable interest and are progressing finely. Amony other exercises they have deb ttes and discuss questions extem poraneously. Last Friday evening, passing the the school house o?!r reporter heard or seamed to hear the following cogent argument from one of the fail orators: Mr. President : The question is, which is the more desirable Country or City life. From selection and from choice also I am decidedly in favor of the country. My reasons are daily apparent. Take our little city I am informed they call it so because it has been incorporated the fair Roseburg, nestling among the hills, that is pretty, but it would have beftn the truth all the same had it been called a hole in the mountains; and what do we see saloons open on Sunday and drunk men served in every style and variety every day in the week the extra day in leap year sacred to us young women included. You don't see that in the country, not a saloon, not a drunk man, not a cow, no Mr. Tresident, not a cow. Here we have thousands of hens, ducks, geese, the feathered kind I refer to and turkey gobblers. They crow, quack, hiss and gobble in season anil out of season, day and night. . They occupy everybody else's premises except their owners and are a horrible nuisance. There are bo such birds of kinds in thecouutry, not one. They accuse us of sending strong butter to town or allowing it to walk here. This is false. We make none. They say our eggs have been laid by sickly hens. I repeat we have no hens. Nothing can be said against the country because forsooth there is nothing to say. Turn the nuisances of the city' out into the pastures and farm yards and give us the quietude of the country here and then they can talk about city life. Meanwhile, hear my gen tle bugle, I prefer the peacefulness of nothing, to the jumping tooth ache of confusion." . S. F.
