STATE NEWS-
The contiact for putting in the fifty
two new iron cells in the addition to
tlie jenitenlirtiy, was awarded to
Trenttmuri k Wolfe, ci Portland, by
the state board of public buildings on
Tuesday. "The bids for the contract
were as follows. Trenkrmm &, Wolfe,
$11,999; II. C, Wandt, of Portland,
$15, 928; 13. F. Drake, Satem, 816,728,
Win. Druck, Portland, 17,000; Kob
ert Collier & Co., Portland, 819,415;
and that of the Willamette Ironworks,
Portland, was for $20,300. The work
f placing the cells will be commenced
as goon as the brick woik is far enough
completed.
The county jail at Baker City, Or
jegon caught fire last week and burned
to the ground. There were six pris
oners confined in the' jail, two for mur
der and four for theft. Five were
burned to death, and the sixth, Fred
Wmkleman, the 18-year-old murderer
is not expected to live.
It is proposed to place a monument
over the grave of Col. Nesmith by the
citizens of Polk county. Let the whole
State take the matter in hand.
East Portland is in debt 18,805.
The largest colony that ever came to
Oregon is being organized in Indiana
and Nebraska, and will start about
August 1st, It will settle in the Will
amette. The citizens of East Portland, Or.,
finding that they could not get rid of
certain Chinese living in cabins near

Company's wharf, stationed a fire en
gine near cabins to prevent a conflag
ration and set fire to them. The Chi
nese fled.
The register of the land office at Ore
gon. City has received official informa
tion of the forfeiture of the Astoria
land grant and that the same is open to
homesteading and pre-empting.
The Oregon State Temperance Al
liance appointed the following delegates
to represent them at the National Con
vention to be held in Philadelphia in
September next: Dr. and Mrs. II. K.
Hines, Mr. and Mrs. Wallis Nash, Cor
vallis; Elder J. W. Webb, Portland;
4md the President, Prof. Milh-r, of
Philomath College; and the Secretary,
jj. E. Houston, ex-officio.
Wm. Lyons, of Oakland, Cab, has
purchased Binger Hermann's saw mill
t Coquille City, which he intends put
ting in order and running regularly.

The new mines are only sixteen miles
from Joseph, and the Josephitcs are

The excitement over the discovery
of gold at Little Meadows, on the head
of Owens creek, near Pendleton, is un
abated. The Teachers' Institute held at,
Grant's Pass last week was probably
the most successful ever held in Sou
thern Oregon.
The reports of the wheat crop are
: more encouraging as the harvest pro
gresses. Eastern Oregon is attracting quite a
number of Gentiles from Utah, who
are tired of the irrepressible conflict,
and are desirous of peace and plenty
iu a white man's country.
The Astorian estimates the salmon
pack of the season of 18S5 on the Co
lurabia river at 500,000 cases, against
672,000 cases for 1884. This is quite
' a falling off, which was caused by the
ten days' strike at the commencement
of the season and the small run of sal
mon dnrin? the last week. Of this
amount 250,000 cases or half the pack,
is afloat and en route for market. Tl
remainder will shortly follow. The
reason as a whole has not been a satis
factory one to either canncrs cr fisher
men.
Gen. Jos. E. Johnston, the great
confederate chief tan was in Portland
Monday but was summoned to New
York to act as One of the pall bearers
:pf Gen, Grant.
All Oregon papers are advocating
manufactories as the panacea for hard

Coney Jland has the "biggest" elephant
in the world. It 13 150 feet long, 88 feet
high; the legs are S3 feet iu diameter. The
two hind legs are provided with circular
stairways, which lead to the rooms of the
body -of this colossus, of which there are
thirty-four. The tusks are thirty-six fetfc
long.
Great Britain and Ireland contain 30,
000,000 head of paultry, and Great Britain's
annual-erg 'Liil amounts to $31,250,000.

Grant va3 cruelly robbed and died, but

The Panama canal, which was to have
been completed in 1888 at a cost of 120,
000,000, would not be finished in ten years,
even if the present rate of excavation was
maintained. More than 100,000,000 have
been already expended, and the probabilities
are that if the canal is ever finished it will
be after an outlay of 450,000,000. The
prediotion is freely made abroad that when
M. de L?sseps dies the whole scheme wil
collapse.
President Cleveland sent a subscription of
250 to the fund for rebuilding Music Hall
at Buffalo, destroyed by fire March last.

Grant was a young lieutenant on duty at Fort
