A Congress is to assemble in San Domingo on September 10th, to decide whether the remains 'of Christopher Columbus repose there or In Havana. It is believed that the body found in a trunk at Pittsburg, shipped from t'hicaao by unknown parties, is that of an Italian lemon peddler named Phill po Curuso. The aggregate losses by- fire in the United btates and Canada during the month of April were $7,750,0C0, and for the live months, so far this year, $35,250,000. . AtRichmond, Va., W. R. Smith, charged with stealing $240 ) while a clerk in the Auditor's office, was found guilty and sen tenced, to two years in the penitentiary. Annie Schalch, who fell heir to $10,COO in cash a few days ago, was arrested for lrunkeness at Colorado Springs; Colo., and the following morning was found dead in her cell. Mr. Moody appears to have been spe cially successful in drawing crowds at Pittsburg during his recent mission in that city. People flocked in from a radius of 100 miles. The residence of John Knight, a farmer. living near Brunswick, Mo., was destroyed by tire, and in it pemhed William Uruner, a young man about 21 years old, who was living with Knight. Major General Irwin McDowell died at San Francisco May 5tb. He was placed on the retired list Oct. 13, 1882, and has sinee lived a quiet life with his family at his res idence in that city. An order has been issued from the War Department pi icing on the retired list of the army on three-quarters pay fifty-seven enlibted men who have served as enlisted men for thirty years. Many wealthy Russian nobles are taking to g mbiinx neavny on the stock exchange. Se ve al of these amateurs have been rui ned and on a recent Sunday there were three suicides, owing to losses. Twenty four deaths from a disease re sembling typhoid-pneumonia occurred in one day in the mining town of Plymouth, Perm. Seventeen hundred persons are said to have been attacked. A public Rale of negroes occurred at Richmond, Va., May 5tb. under the va grant law. One of them brought $38 for three months; one $14 for three months, and a womau 25 cents for a year. In a drunken rage Adolph Hess, living near C ncordia, Ohio, beheaded his little child with an ax. beat his wife to death with the same weapon, and then hanged himself to a rafter of the dwelling. The present Ameer of Afghanistan at the age of -twelve years was placed at the head, of an army of 22,000 men by his father, and ever since he has been inter ested in soldiers and military matters. A Raleigh prisoner, who had been de eland not guilty in a murder trial, hanged himself the other day after confest-iug that he w as guilty and that remorse led him to iuflict upon himself the punish ment he escaped in the courts. A strong effort is being made to break up i he gaming at Monaco Several suicides of late, one being a handsome and aristo cratic young lady, have aided in concen trating attention to the demoralizing in fluences surrounding European watering places. In a recent Parliamentary paper the estimated population of England up to the middle of 1884 was 27.132;449, against L'5,874,439 enumerated in the census, of 1881. The number of deaths last year is given at 53 ',951; marriages, 408,410; births, 008,584. A row between some Columbian soldiers and Jamaica workmen at Culebra, resulted in the death of twenty-five of the latter and twenty were wounded. The Jamai cans are leaving in large numbers and the work on the canal will be much delayed in consequence. ...-.- At Dunkirk, N. Y., May 0th, a pile driver exploded. A man named Foot e was thrown sixty feet into the lake and came to the surface twice, but the people were so panic stricken that they could render him no assistance. The fireman and a man named Siley are missing. The Russian corvette Strelokhas arrived at New York, and will doubtless ; be fol lowed by the British man-of-war Garnet. The former carries tn guns and has a crew of 160 men. The shipping interest has some fear that shewill pick up a trans- Atlantic steamer, should war be declared. SCHOOL AND CHURCH. Tbs treasury of the Baptist Home Missionary Society is in sucn a depleted condition that' appointments have been only made for six months, fears being felt that money enough may not oe con tributed to pay a full year's salaries. Chicago Inter Ocean. -r-There were 600 Frenchmen at Ox ford the past term-quite an unprece dented number, The general style of living demands less expense than form erly, and no man finds it now incum bent on him to give wine parties as of yore. At a Sunday-school convention, ob jection having been raised to the un healthful influence of. many of the books in the libraries, a superintendent rose and suggested that they should be weeded out and sent to the poor chil dren out West Harper's Bazar. Miss Mary Caldwell, a wealthy Catholic lady 'of Baltimore, has given $300,000 to be used for the establish ment of a Catholic university for tho bet ter education of the priesthood, on the plan proposed; by Bishop Spaulding. The Plenary Council has accepted ; the gif t.--Baltimore Sttn. : Mr. John Scott, who recently closed a ten weeks' term of free high school in the town of Holden, Me., says that in all that time he had no occasion to speak reprovingly to any one of his scholars. He says he ha3 taught fourteen years and never before had such an experi ence as this, and he asks his fellow teachers of this country to r tell him whether any one of them can say as much for any school taught by them. Troy Times. v-.-"---'" The new catalogue of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, shows that there are now 42 members of the faculty and 402 students, ' the latter being di vided as follows: Collegiate Depart ment, 244; Chandler Scientific School, 74; Agricultural College, 28; Medical College, 44; Thayer School of Engi neering, 12. In the Academic Depart ment 19 are from Maine, 98 from New Hampshire, 54 from Vermont, and 33 from Massachusetts. Outside of New England nineteen States and Territories are represented. The Rochester Post-Express is doing a commendable - work in showing up the defects of countiy school sanita tion. The yards and surroundings of many school-houses in the country are indescribably filthy. Some of the de tails can not be referred to in a public journal, and are sickening to contem plate. There may be some excuse for faulty sanitation in crowded cities, but there is none in the country. It is high time that attention was called to this evil. If the cholera were to come to this country it would make short work with the people who live in such neigh borhoods. Chicago Journal. PUNGENT PARAGRAPHS. An experienced housewife in a long article tells "how to save your dishes from being broken." It is unnecessary. All you have to do is to put them away and eat off of tin dishes. -My dear sir, you cannot always reason correctly from analogy. Because, for example, red-skinned apples ; make the best jelly, it does not follow that a red-faced man makes the best husband. Chicago Journal. When they pluck them a stocking is kept on the head to blind the bird. While he can not see he is quiet, but if bis blinkers get uncovered then he "goes for" the plncker. The doctor moved his arm so as to disturb the stocking, and instantly he saw what was done and went head first out of the pen, not caring for any more plumes just then. As he tumbled head first over the fence the bird let fly a kick which, striking a fence-board, made toothpicks of a whole panel length.
