turned from a trip'to liaudolpb, Coos county
where he made arrangements with S. K.
Lane, to erect a s w mill on the latter place
on Deer Creek. This is good news for the
people of that section as it is mneh needeJ.
Mr. Kyes also reports Mr. Lane doing a good
business in his mine and expecting to visit

The Death of Jons ScnsErona.' John
Schneider, who for several years had been

b-'cominij in bad health, went to Portland
last week to jain admittance to a hospital.
He registered at tne New York Hotel. The
r.extday he was f und dead in ths corridor
of the hotel. He was an industrious Ger
man, some forty 'yean f age, and "poor
Schneider" was the heartfelt fe ling of this
community, wheu the sad news arrived.
A New Sawmill. vVe learn that the
tniohinery of Mr. J. I'ittmauV sawmill on
. Pleasant Hill lias been bought by a company
of which Mr. Thornton and Dr. Santert, of
l'o?e urjr, are prominent members, and
taken to Portland where 1,000 worth of
repairs have Deen m.ida on the same. It is
s&id tha15"lame will ba seut to the lower
Siuslaw via San Francisco, and be placed in
a mill which will be erected two miles below
Florence on the Lane county side. The
cipacity of tho propped mill will be 10,000
feet per day. Guard.

C. Flint were the originators of the happy
affair and succeeded in their undertaking
immens' ly. At an appointed hour, the eclat
of Roseburg assembled at the residence of
Judge Willis and wended their way to Mr.
Rapp's. The surprise was complete, bnt
no mora entertaining host or hostess could
have been found, and in this the ladies had
shown their good judgment Everything
went as merry as a wadding bell, each and
every one of the throng of over fifty enjoy
ing themselves to the greatest extent, refresh
ments, nice and delicious, wer served, And
the services of Mr. Ostrander engaged, when
the happy crowd adjourned to Slocum's Hall

way to take charge of the Jacksonville cir

The United States comprises 36 states 8
territories aud one district. The house of
Representatives which is the most numerous
branch of the American Congress from and
after March 4th will be composed of 325
J members, and 8 Tenitorial Delegates who
bare tsea.s in the Congress but do not vote.
Politically there are 182 Democratic mem
bers 140 Republicans 2 Greeubackers and 1
vacancy. The territorial delegates are com
posed of 4 democrats 3 republicans and one
independent from Utah.
