In the Commons in London recently,
Gladstone ' stated that the government

The Canadian Pacific Railway wants
500 men to work on its road in British

to $2.50 a day wages. They can get
employment on making application in

The distress among English shipbuild
ing workingmen is increasing. At ship
yards on the Tyne, Clyde and Mersey
there is scarcely one-fourth of the possi
ble working force aud power now in ef
fective operation.
The tariff committee of the French
chamber of deputies, by a vote of six to
five, has improved the principle of in
creasing import duties on corn and fiour.
It resolved, however, to confer with the
.government regardi ng the amount of the

A party of brigands, armed with re
volvers, attacked and killed two em
ployes of the French Larium Mining
Company, carrying 20,000 to pay the
miners at Athens. Extraordinary steps
have been taken by the authorities to
capture the murderers and robbers.
The Chinese are assuming the offensive
both Tonquin and Formosa. Before the
French can resume the aggressive they
must have an additional 15,000 men in
Tonouin and 10,000 in Formosa. An ex
pedition to Pekin would be cheaper,
the matter of both men and money.

The mule drivers in the local mines east

Says a Washington dispatch: The hear
ing in the celebrated Pelletier claim

A dozen gentlemen of Duluth, Minn.,
recently signed a note for 5,000 payable

A fire at Hickman, Ky last week de
stroyed the Hickman Furniture Factory,
Bondurant's brewery, a commission house,
railroad elevator, two large warehouses
and the Hickman Wagon Factory. Loss,

fire started.
