THE IND.EPiLXDiiNi. 8 ATU II I A Y, KG V. 2StV 164. Whitelaw Beep, edt or ot the New York Tri'din, positively declines to le candidte for the Senate from New York. The reason Jack would not eat his supper. Petrclicm Las Iseen struck within the corporate limits of TJkiah, Mendo cino county Cal. at s depth of of sixty fet-t. The oil is clear an I turns readilr. The strike has created considerable ex citement in the neighborhood. "Af E you oipg to count such snull fry as Belva and FJuttlerl" asked a wan of ono of the board of canvassers. Certainly; we must do it." "WIiv are you compelled tc-f IVcmusp. this is an official count, and we must count al the fish to get the net insult." Gbammaivjaxs are wrestling with the "long-felt want" of an impersonal pro noun or ra'her, of a personal pionoun of common gender for the English . language. There is nly one way to : make people adopt such a word, when Invented, and 'that is to make slang of it. htm mil in i iw mm It is said that work will soon be re sumed on the Oiegon -and California lailroad. "We hope this is true for the cad cannot be finished too soon for the wrlifate of Southwestern Oregon. Gtrat activity is required m railroad tuililing to supply facilities adaquate - to tho increase of our commerce and population. j The Mind that can become so fren zied by disappointment as to criticise his Wst. friends as Mr. Blaine has done, is unworthy of the Presidency It seems that it would be impossible for; a person of such magnetism to telegraph to the National Committee and cal' them a "pack of fools," but such seems to be the fact. Tnr. Purt!ai.d Board of trade has taken tha initiatory steps towards or ganizing a Board of Immigrat'on. This is i matter in which the entire State should feel an interest and offer all the mateiial aid in her power. Incalculable benefit to the entire Stat would of ne cessity bo derived from a well organ ized Board of Immigration. The week has produced a bit I of political humor. Barclay Henley, the single Democratic Representative.; of California in tlio coming administration declares, in an interview, that he needs ihe prayers of all good people, and surely he is a fit subject fo- sympathy. Ifeis overrun wilh applicants for office under Cleveland, and every man vho has remained faithful throughout the long years of defeat, every man who bore a torch, and .thousands who have done neither, want office, Henley says that if all who hare applied to him as Democrats had voted f.a- Cleveland, Blaine would have been boat mi fifl nn" w v V j V V V jn Culitornia. Ther e are now 272 prisioners con fined in the Oregon penitentiary. At th time Geo. Collins was appointed war den of the penitentiary, which was little over ;i year ago, oly ISO pris ioners were confined in that instution thus making an increase of 92 during vi.v .jju cai( vi- an increase ot more than one half of the original nnm oer. 1 he penitentiary is now greatly overciowded. Originally it was only planned to keep 212 persons in confine- i l ment; ana only a tow months i--o 140 new cells were added making accomo dations for 252 prisioners. It 1I be seen that there is a surplus of 20 pris ioners, and that it U necessary to put more than designed in each cell, and -that further additions must be made at an early date. .Ex. The Radical press are now pulling each other by the ears over the respec tive statements of how it happened that James G. Blaine came to be left in th great national handicap that has just been run. One class cf organs are vi-i olent in asserting that tin prohibition ists did it, and nothing short of St. John's scalp will reconcile them and heal thir political-, wound. Another lot of astuta fignrerg are equally cer tain that Rv. Burchard did it with Ins littlo "Rum, Romanism and Rebed ion" speech which these same identical scribblers applauded so loudly as good I'-p'ibL'en'i doctrine when it was deliv ered. Stili another lot of party ,.t t!r savers figured it all out, ot tli Dim., m ico dinner to which Jay Gould enveig leJ Mr. Blaine. Fortunately however no cno has yet charged either Belva Look wood or Ben. Butler with the crime of defeating the Republican par tya narrow escape for their aspirants or Presidential honors. E. tHtllJinaiwuor- It would be no easy matter to forshad ... ... ... t v ll r 1 1 y of tin ii cr nni,T ailminis atvation Junius it were fcr the fact that the whele course of President Cleveland has been of snih legality as to leave no doubt that he is equal to the great task set before him. This '.greatness ! consists in his honesty his integrity, his patriotism, at .d his sound judgement' A party which has been for twenty four years out of j)wer looser a great deal of cohesive power cf compact organiza tion and becomes simply the unorgan ized month piece of the people. In the case of .the Democrsaic pa' ty however there have been great underhihg fun damental principio3 which appealed to the heart as well as the head and kept the party alive. It s safe to assume that these principles will be the foun dation 'of Piesident Cleveland's admin- t istraticin. Whether a simple return to the policy of our forefathers would be sufficient to reorganize the latant energies ot a party is a tair matter for debate Maka haste slowly is a i(ood maximj for the Democracy at this time, be notideceived. The people have the greatest confidence in and res,.ect for the paj-tv. Thvy wish it to make no mistake. They pray for it to be solid ratherjthan brilliant. They asks its foundation to be broad and safe. In 31 the walks of life President Cleve land lias shown firmness and zoh judgement, candor and simplicity. He represents tliore qualities which mde J. ckson the idol of the Democracy, and ho brings great administrative ex perience and ability to tho discharge of his duties. He is backed by the peo ple. It is for him to bring together the crfide wishes of the people into compact form. It is for him to shape the destinies of his party and his coun try. For his integrity, his wisdim, Ir's Democracy the greatest, truest ever given; to mortal man has been awarded him. ; So far no mistaks have been imade. And when President Cleveland brings back our goveiroent to the former simplicity when the great Avork of reform and retrenchment has been completed, then his adminis tration will begin the work of grappling with those great new issues which have t sprung up through modern inventions and the extsut of modern corporate power. As a leader and definer of principals he has the opportunity of Jefferson and he has the ability, the honesty and firmness to use it. j PS0TZCTI0N A FALLACY. The result of the late election has de veloped the fact that the comercial pol icy of the United States in the future cannot proceed upon Ihe assumtion that vre are an isolated country, shut out from the rest of the world. James G. Blaine in making protection the par amount issued in the campaign has done 'a great deal in turning the atteu tion Of the present generation to a study of tie tariff question and its relation to theirj individual prosperity. By iuves ligation of this question our farmers and trades people readily understand the influence which eutsido markets nave upon our wh.-at fields even ro the tvmote interior in ascertaining the far mers profit on his surplus grain. Thv readily see that a high protective tariff cannot maintain tl e price of our a -ri-cultural products. Investigation and the Bureau of Immigration demonstrate that the high protection tariff instead of protecting the American laborer from foreign competition bring hither swarms of opperators from these foreign shores to co . pete with him at his very door. While tho short sighted policy of a high protective tariff increases his oast of living and the increase of pop ulation raises his rent while his wages' are reduced or entirely cut oQ' by rea son of the immigrant from Europe taking his place or what is not infre quently the case the 'mill' shuUin- lown on account of the over produc tion simulated by the falacious thoor. A protection. TEMPEEA1T0 Many are the anathemies we hear uonounced upon the temperenc. cause and especially asainst St. John ind prohibition by Republicans and Re. mbl.can leaders. This we are not surprised at when it eminates fmm well known votaries of -Bacchus: biu to hear persons who ha; e b-i stufore prided themselves as temperance il formers now prophecying that the tem perance cause has been put back fortv years by the candidacy of St. John and that no one but cranks voted for him and prohobition leads one to doubt their sanity or that they were ever honest in advocating prohibition. Jf the cause of prohibition is found-d upon principles cf right. Those who had the courage and manhood to stand up before the American people and vte for their principles can with a aeifj approving conscience afford to umiou'e! the slur and epethets heaped upon them by their former as- saeiates and co-workers in the ieaiper ance cause and say with ono who snf fered pefiSectttiou.s ud even death from the same tlass of b . pocritrs. Too Oivgonian in a recent issue Says "It is possible under the provisions of the tenure of oiUce law for tl.e Re publican senate to prevent sweeping changes m thp office to which appoint ments are made by and with the advice and concent of the senate." Where the republicans lay this unction to their souls and take Sulace from the pros pects of a longer lease of office they overlook the fact that this law was formed for the purpose of turning ras cals out and to secure hun sty in the administration of the affairs of the government. It was the mrognce an, fie extravagance with which these offices wen; administered that led the people to declare for a change at the ballut box and by the help of Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks they are not goii g to bs deprived of the benefit of the change they hav declared for by any unprecedent or un called for arbitrary action on the part cf a Republican senate. DISGEAOEiUL. Sometime since Iltnrv Gaterman, a well respected citizen of taio city, fell sicllind bis sickness developed a men tal malady of distressful character. He was kindly cared for by friends and re markably so by the Odd Feiiows Lodge of this place, who cheerfully rendered that care and attention that so uody illustrates the order. Despairing of securing a cine here, they concluded, to Bend him to the Asylum at Salem, pre suming that Ise would be humanely treated a:id receive proper attention from those specially qualified to furnish relief in such casts. We trust, whilst living, that Mi. Gaterman received or dinary care but his disease seemed to have been incurable and finally on the 8th i nst. he died. Immediately a prop er committee of the Lodge toh'gr.tphed to Dr. Carpenter to send the body here for interment. And hn did send it. It was placed in a plain, but as for the matter of that, perhaps sufficiently re spectab't coffin, but the body was un- w ashed, undressed and b-low the waist had n covering' save S1 shw.t- in .which the corpse was carelessly wrapped. We aie not of those who believe in funeral pageants or extravagance in the burial of our dead, but a decent respMet for a supreme inexorable law is Instinct in the heart of every true man;.nd woman in tli land. Would the lamented Dr. Hawthorne have done that It, is an insult to the memory of a pure, noble christian man. Would Dr. Joseph i have suffered a body to have left the Asylum, whilst he was in charge, in that condition 1 This is also almost an insult to the honored living whose every act would repel such an insinuation. There can be no pretext that Dr. Car penter oi his sei vants feared that they would not be compensated for proper services rendered. Thev knew that the Odd Fellows of Roseburg would meet every honorable obligation by them assumed. The legislature which sits in January next will name the successor to Dr. Carpenter and we profoundly hope they will not be cajoled to nominate him to succeed himself. Everything being even Ue reasonably expect that a Republican w'ill be selected to this most dedicate and important trust, and with this we would be most heartily content, provided a competent, human physi cian is selected. Of the latter there are very many iw the Republican party. You Oaa Hare It. "lUv' dear, wlut would I gn? to Umv your hair? i often said Kj iilei-Hgil laiiieH toyomij; onifs.
