The Duchy of Schlcswig, recently
wrested from Denmarck by Germany, is
in a state of ferment over the law originat
ing with Bismarck, forbidding any of the
people from speaking the Danish language.
Papers in Madeira state that the treaty
with the United States provides that
sugars to the number of 10 will be admit
ted by America free of duty, but that to
bacco" from the Antilles will be subject to
a moderate du ty.
Sir George Bawcn, Governor of Hong
Kong, has been ordered by telegraph by
the English government to refuse permis
sion to any French men-of-war to refit or
ship contraband or war stores within the
limits of that colony.
It is estimated that the revenue in Ger
many for the year has decreased 200,100,000
marks, and the expenditures have in
creasd 22,000,000 marks. The deficit will
be met by an increase of the contributions

A protectionist league has been formed
in Paris, whose purposes it will be to op
pose the proposed duties on food imports.
Milne, Minister of Agriculture, is in favor

"The American ship Henry Villard has
arrived off Plymouth, England, in a sink
ing condition, having collided off Portland
light with the English ship Madgeburg.
The latter sunk instantly, and the crew,
seven men, were drowned. The Villard
belongs to Portland, Or.
The Atlantic Steamship Companies of
Hamburg, Bremen, Antwerp and Havre
have favorably received the proposals of
English steamship companies to fix the
steerage passenger rates to ports in Amer
ica at the minimum price of live guineas
per head, the arrangement to go into effect
in February.

tendent and two engineers were fatally

Three hundred furnace hands and min
ers of the Shenandoah Iron Works, Har
risonburg, V a., went on a strike last week,
owing to the failure to pay two months ar
rears of wages.
The postponement of the New Orleans
Exposition frem December 1st to 16th was
owing to the inability of President Arthur
to officiate at the opening ceremonial be
fore the latter date.
A cut down of from 5 to 10 per cent is to
go into effect soon at the Amoskego,
Stark, Armory, Langdon and Manchester
corporations, at Manchester, N. H. This
will affect 10,0C0 operatives.
Among the passengers on the steamer
Clyde who arrived from Turks Island in
New York last week, are nine survivors
of shipwrecks by the recent hurricane.

Oil has been struck in Webster, O.,
twenty miles south of Bellaire. Two wells
are : now running 100 barrels each a day.
Operators are fllocking to the spot, and a
town of seventy-five has grown to a place
of 1,000 in ten days. A SGore of wells are
being sunk.
Professor Wolf, Superintendent of the
Mount Pleasant (Iowa) schools. Miss Alice
Carpenter, principal of the high school,
Etta Letter and Edith Baugh, members of
the high school senior class, were drowned
when out boat riding on Tracy Lake, near
Mount Pleasant, last week.
John Adams, Henry Ward, Davy Pigeon,
each aged 12 years, and Burt James, aged
16, have been arrested at New Lisbon, Wis.,
at the instance of the secret service of the
Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway
Company, charged with having placed ob
structioms upon the track of that road
near New Lisbon recently.
